Episode Recap of Agents of SHIELD, Season 2 Episode 10: What They Become
This episode opens on the bus, which is trying to avoid being fired upon by HYDRA. May uses evasive maneuvers and cloaks the plane at the last second, making it look like HYDRA’s missiles took out the plane.
May meets up with Coulson and catches him up with what happened. Trip brings out some old Howling Commando equipment they can use since it’s mechanical. Meanwhile, Fitz and Simmons discuss what happened to Mac. Simmons thinks he might still be alive but is being controlled. Elsewhere, Hunter and Bobbi also discuss whether Mac is dead or alive. Hunter hugs Bobbi. While doing so, she sneaks a flash drive from him. But he calls her on it. Coulson and May discuss Skye, and Coulson is confident that May trained Skye well enough to handle herself.
Ward brings Skye to see her father, and leaves them alone in the room to talk. Skye is hostile toward him, and calls him a monster. He tells her that she was stolen from him, and that he wasn’t always like this. He tells her that she was born in China, and he had worked in a clinic. He apologizes for not being there for her and protecting her. She asks him to get her out of there, but he says she’s where she’s supposed to be, and this is her destiny.
Bobbi is supposed to meet up with Diego, but he’s acting suspicious. As he and a few guys walk past, she pulls Hunter into a smooch, and gets handed a note with an address.
Skye tries to leave the room, but a soldier is guarding it. Her father tells her that he doesn’t work for Whitehall, and that he needed him to find her. He also tells her that her mother was special, that she had a gift, and comes from a line of people, and that Skye has a gift. He has brought her there to receive her gift, that there’s a transformation that has to happen. Skye insists he tell her what happened to her mother. He tells her that SHIELD came into the clinic and took her because she was dangerous. Then by the time he had caught up with her, Whitehall had cut her to pieces and took her organs. He begins humming a song, which Skye recognizes. But then, he gets called away by Dr. Whitehall, and before he leaves, tells Skye he’s going to kill him.
Bobbi calls Coulson and tells him HYDRA is at Ponce de Leon Theater. They realize HYDRA is trying to shortcut into the chamber.
Dr. Whitehall, Skye’s father, Ward, Raina, Skye, and HYDRA soldiers gather together. Whitehall forces Skye to pick up the Diviner. She does, and nothing happens, so she uses it to attack a soldier. Her father also knifes a solider, but she quickly gets held at gunpoint. Whitehall recognizes Skye’s father, but is unsure why Ward is there, but Raina says it’s for love. Whitehall thinks that in time, he can make Ward comply.
Trip, Fitz, and Simmons go down to set up the bombs.
Agent 33 guards Ward, while Whitehall uses a device to prevent Skye’s father from attacking him. Whitehall tells Skye that her mother’s gift was that she didn’t age, and wonders what Skye’s gift is. They hear a noise. It’s Coulson and May infiltrating. They go see what’s going on. Skye’s father is able to attack the soldier left to guard them, but leaves Skye and Ward tied up, and goes to kill Whitehall.
Skye’s father approaches Whitehall, who points a gun at him, ready to shoot. But just then, Coulson shoots Whitehall from behind, which upsets Skye’s father that he was not the one to kill Whitehall. Agent 33 shoots at Coulson, who runs off. Meanwhile, Bobbi and Hunter take out some HYDRA soldiers. Skye’s father attacks Coulson.
Ward is able to escape, and releases Skye, who takes the fallen soldier’s gun and shoots Ward. Skye finds her father beating up Coulson, and yells at him to stop. She gives her father the chance to walk away, or else she’ll kill him. He tells Skye he will always love her, and calls her “Daisy.” Skye tells Coulson she’s going to find the Obelisk and make it right, though Coulson tries to warn her not to go down there.
Agent 33 finds Ward and tells him that Whitehall is dead, so she doesn’t know what to do. He tells her to help him out of there, then they’ll figure out what to do.
Skye finds the hole HYDRA drilled, and realizes that Raina already went down there. Raina has the Obelisk, and runs into Mac, whose eyes are black. May and Coulson find the hole that Skye went down, and Coulson goes down as well. May radios this information to Trip, Fitz, and Simmons, who have just finished up setting up the bombs and gone back up. However, Trip goes back down to deactivate the bombs.
Mac leads Raina to an area with a pedestal in the center. Skye finds Mac and tries to talk to him, but he is not responsive. Skye continues on and finds Raina. The Obelisk starts to glow, and then it floats to the center of the pedestal. Meanwhile, Trip deactivates the final bomb just in time.
Coulson tries to find Skye, but as he approaches, Mac attacks him. Trip finds Skye and goes inside the pedestal area just as it closes. Coulson is unable to make it inside. The Obelisk begins to grow silver shards. Then a puff of smoke comes out, and Skye and Raina get covered in blackness. Another puff of smoke comes out, and Trip gets covered in the blackness as well. A few moments later, the blackness begins to crackle and fall off of Skye, and then suddenly bursts off of her all at once. She looks just fine underneath. However, Trip disintegrates to dust.
In the final scene, an unidentified man has an Obelisk. He calls someone on the phone and says that there’s someone new. We see that the man has only skin where eyes should be.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 2 Episode 10 of Agents of SHIELD: What They Become
Noooo, not Trip! I liked Trip! That was so sad when he started just, melting away. Sigh. Well, this was a pretty good episode. Agents of SHIELD is getting more intense and sci-fi, and I like it. Skye finally met her dad, and we got some background about him and Skye’s mother. Not only that, we found out what Skye’s real name is – Daisy. Then we also finally learned more about Skye’s “alien”-ness. This whole time, we’ve known that she’s an alien, but it hasn’t seemed like she had any kind of special powers. Now we know that her alien status allows her not only to be able to touch the Obelisk, but to be transformed by it as well. And apparently Raina is of the same alien race as Skye, since the same is true of her. But the question is, transformed into what?
Where is the show going to go from here now that Whitehall is dead? (Or is he really dead?) He was the big villain for the first half of the season. I suppose it is going to be exploring what Skye is, and what she is now capable of, after her experience with the Obelisk. What about Raina, will she still be around too, or will she become more of a bad guy?
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what this half of the season brings for Agents of SHIELD!
Josh’s Thoughts: Agents of SHIELD, Season 2 Episode 10: What They Become
So this was a crazy episode of Agents of SHIELD. I was really sad to see Triplett go. I felt like he wasn’t on the show long enough. I have a feeling that he was axed due to the crowded cast the show has now. It is even more heartbreaking that he died as he was trying to save Skye and it turns out she probably didn’t need saving after all.
So it looks like it is confirmed that Skye and Raina are ushering in the Inhumans storyline from the Marvel comics. I hope this raises the stakes of Agents of SHIELD. The show is pretty hit and miss at times, and it is one I really hope gets some momentum. Hopefully the Inhumans are going to do that.
I am curious to see what happens with Ward as well. I can’t figure that guy out. He probably is just a psycho, that is impossible to read. I guess we will see more later though.
