The episode picks up where the last episode left off, with Mack and May entering Momentum Labs after the blast and finding no one. Elsewhere in the building, other agents have found Eli, who uses his newly acquired powers to kill the agents. May and Mack soon find the downed agents, and a wall of carbon.
Mack and May return to the plane, where they discuss Fitz, Robbie, and Coulson’s disappearance with Mace, Daisy, and Gabe. Mace is confident that Simmons will come up with a solution.
Elsewhere, Simmons is brought to a Teregenesis cocoon, which is odd because it’s been gestating for seven months, whereas they usually only last for a few moments.
May privately shows Mack that the has the Darkhold book. He warns her not to open it. They are interrupted by Mace. Mack says he has a lead, and thinks that a member of the Chinatown crew that was in prison with Eli might know where he is, but Mace isn’t interested right now, and tells Mack to prep the bodies of the four fallen agents. Mace then claims to May that he talked to Simmons, who said that it will take her a few hours to get back.
Daisy tries to cheer Gabe up. Gabe thinks that if Robbie is out there, he’s going straight for Uncle Eli. Mack rides off on a motorcyle just before the plane takes off.
Over at Momentum Labs, Fitz and Coulson discuss being hit by a blast. Just then, May and Mack come in. But we soon see that it’s the same scene from earlier, except this time from Fitz and Coulson’s perspectives — and they quickly realize that May and Mack can’t see them.
We also see the scene with Eli again, this time from Robbie’s perspective. He also quickly figures out that no one can see him. That is, except for Coulson and Fitz. They join the others on the plane, and again, the scene replays, except from their perspective. Fitz says they are out of phase with reality. They vow to try to figure out what’s going on and to make others hear and see them again.
Fitz follows Mace when he goes to make the phone call to Simmons. Robbie goes with him. However, it turns out that Mace was unable to get Simmons on the line, though his assistant tells him that he has Senator Nadeer on the line. Mace talks to Nadeer, to whom he is thankful that she is keeping the incident quiet for now, but says he needs to have Simmons back. She refuses and hangs up on him. Mace has his assistant contact Dr. Radcliffe. Meanwhile, Robbie feels like he is freezing cold, and collapses to the ground. Fitz picks him up and tries to keep him warm.
Meanwhile, Coulson is with May in the cargo hold, trying to get her to hear him, but it’s not working. Mack comes in, and May suggests using the Darkhold book — the same scene we saw earlier. Suddenly, Coulson hears Robbie screaming in agony and goes to investigate.
Robbie says that they are being dragged down and that “he” doesn’t want to go down. The Ghost Rider leaves Robbie’s body and goes into Mack’s body. It is at this point that we see we have gone back to the earlier scene of Mack taking off on a motorcycle. Robbie realizes that Mack is going after the Chinatown crew. Daisy takes Robbie’s car and chases after Mack, and Robbie gets in the car and goes with her. Daisy keeps up with Mack for awhile, but Mack is able to zip through traffic and get away.
Back at SHIELD HQ, Dr. Radcliffe, who has brought Aida with him, seems to think that these boxes are far beyond his understanding, but says he’ll keep working on it. May gives the Darkhold book to Radcliffe, who opens it, takes a look, and quickly shuts it, saying that it’s too much for a human mind to bear.
Meanwhile, wherever Simmons is, she detects a heartbeat from the person inside the cocoon, and can tell that the person is nervous. She kicks everyone out, and calmly talks to the subject, who seems to be calming down as well. The cocoon begins to crack.
Mack tracks down the Chinatown crew in a warehouse, and demands to talk to one of them, eyes blazing.
May tries to talk Radcliffe into reading and using the book, but he refuses. Aida volunteers to read it. Radcliffe reveals to May that Aida is an android. He eventually agrees to use her to help.
Daisy figures out where Mack is and drives into the warehouse, then fights off the men who attack her. She finds Mack, who turns around and faces her, as his head turns into a flaming skull.
We then backtrack to Robbie’s perspective of riding in the car with Daisy as she was initially chasing Mack. After she loses Mack, Robbie tries to tell her where the Chinatown crew warehouse is, and repeatedly tells her to turn left. It seems like she hears him, and turns left.
Again, we backtrack to the scene with Dr. Radcliffe, this time with Fitz and Coulson standing nearby. Fitz goes over to Aida and pleads with her to read the book, and also reveals to Coulson that Aida is an android. When Fitz walks over to the book, the pages are blank. But they are not blank to Aida.
Simmons carefully begins removing the cocoon from the man underneath. She has only removed it from part of his face, and he barely has time to thank her, before a hood is thrown over her head, and she is whisked out of the room.
Back with Robbie, he leaves Daisy to fight in the warehouse, and goes to find Mack. He sees Mack clutching a man, who pleads with him, saying that he already told him where to find Eli. Robbie calls Mack’s name, and Mack turns around — but Robbie realizes that it’s Ghost Rider, not Mack. Ghost Rider Mack says that he is done with Robbie. The Chinatown Crew guy begs for his life, but Mack throws him against the wall. Robbie insists that Ghost Rider owes him a vengeance, though Ghost Rider says that the neighborhood is soaked with the blood of those he killed for Robbie. However, Robbie says it’s not over until he gets the real monster behind all this, Eli.
Over at SHIELD, a device has been built from the specifications that Aida read about in the Darkhold book. Things are getting darker for Fitz and Coulson. They’re running out of time. While Aida works to make some sort of laser connections within the device, Coulson begins to be dragged away by an unknown force. Fitz grabs Coulson, and tries to pull him. Aida is able to hear them, and reports that they are running out of time, as she continues to work. We see that in the normal plane of existence, May and Radcliffe are unable to see the laser connections that Aida is making, and it just looks like she’s moving her hands around.
Ghost Rider Mack tells Robbie that Mack has a lot of pain, and that he can live off of that pain, whereas he knows where Robbie is being dragged down to, and has escaped it before. That is when Daisy walks in and sees Mack with a flaming skull. She tells him to fight it.
Aida finishes working, and they turn the machine on. They are now able to see Fitz and Coulson through a portal. Fitz is still trying to pull Coulson. Radcliffe stops May from jumping through the portal. She encourages Coulson to fight it, and he does. Fitz and Coulson come back through the portal safely.
Robbie proposes a new deal to Ghost Rider: if Ghost Rider helps him settle his score with Eli, then Robbie will help Ghost Rider settle all of his scores. Ghost Rider leaves Mack’s body and goes back into Robbie’s body. In the normal plane of existence, Mack falls over, and Daisy rushes to his side. Mack tells Daisy that Robbie took “that thing” out of him. When she asks where he took it, he replies, “Hell.”
Fitz confronts Mace about Simmons, and Mace tells Fitz she’ll be here any moment. Simmons returns just then, and they run to each other and share a loving, relieved embrace.
Coulson calls May out for breaking her promise and opening the Darkhold, but she is not ashamed. Daisy returns and says that Mack is resting upstairs, and that she thinks Robbie is gone.
Mack, sitting alone, looks at a picture which we can’t see the front of, but the back reads “Hope 4/18/06.” Suddenly, Robbie comes through the portal and asks Mack if he wants to help settle his last score.
In the final scene, Dr. Radcliffe is back at his place, writing a song on his guitar about saving the day. Unbeknownst to him, in the other room, Aida is working on a project involving the hologram of a human brain — and making laser connections like she did for the portal.
Her Thoughts on Agents of SHIELD, Season 4 Episode 7: Deals with Our Devils
FitzSimmons reunion = perfection! Lucky for Mace, he got out of having to talk about what had happened to Simmons and the fact that he’s working with Senator Nadeer. For now, at least. But I’m sure Fitz isn’t going to let that slide for long. Watch out, Mace, you got some splainin’ to do! But yeah, so as I’m pretty sure we all knew as soon as we saw the cocoon, it was Senator Nadeer’s brother inside. What is going to happen to him? What will his powers be, and how will his sister use him?
As for the Mack storyline, I was surprised by what we learned about him, about the pain that he carried. The truth is, I guess we really don’t know a whole lot about Mack. Who is this “Hope” person? A deceased daughter? Or sister?
I’m also quite curious to know what Aida is up to with her little project with the human brain there at the end…
In any case, another strong, engaging episode of Agents of SHIELD, with an interesting timeline. Hoping that this half of the season finishes strong with its Winter Finale!
