Agents of SHIELD Recap, Season 3 Episode 19: Failed Experiments
Hive Reveals His Origin
Hive tells Daisy his origin story of when he was out hunting long ago, and was taken by Kree reapers to their ship, where they experimented on him. They used their own blood to transform his DNA. He and many others were put through the Kree experiments thousands of years ago. They are the ancestors of Inhumans.
HYDRA supporters are also listening to the story. Hive tells them he’s been working hard to recreated the Kree experiments — and they’re next.
SHIELD HQ
Lincoln approaches May and wants to help with finding Daisy, but she tells him if he wants to help, stop trying.
Meanwhile, Fitz and Simmons work on finding the cure to Hive’s infection. Lincoln volunteers to let them test it out on him.
Coulson sits in his office running facial recognition in an attempt to find Daisy. She is finally identified in South Wyoming in an old mining town that was recently bought by a shell corporation and is now crawling with military. Coulson assumes this is a trap, because she wouldn’t have let herself be identified by the facial recognition software. However, Mack disagrees, and thinks that Daisy wants them to rescue her. Coulson sends Mack and May to the town on a mission — to kill Hive.
Hive Begins the Experiment
Hive criticizes SHIELD, while Daisy defends her friends at SHIELD. Hive then explains how he got “kicked off” of Earth: people saw the connection with other Inhumans, which made them afraid, and which eventually led to Civil War.
Dr. Radcliffe confirms that he has prepared the experiment. The plan is to change their DNA and turn them Inhuman all at once. They then begin the experiment on the three HYDRA “volunteers” — who immediately scream in pain and die.
Mack and May Head Out on Their Mission
Mack gives a briefing to the soldiers who will be accompanying them on their mission. May reminds Mack that this mission isn’t about Daisy. Mack agrees, saying that it’s about him making things right.
Lincoln Makes His Case
Lincoln, Coulson, Fitz, and Simmons have a discussion about whether or not the antitoxin should be tested on Lincoln. Simmons tells Lincoln it could kill him, while Fitz admits there’s a chance it could work. Coulson makes the final decision not to test it on Lincoln, and tells FitzSimmons to start looking at other options.
Change of Plans
Daisy, James, and the two remaining Alicias hang out at the bar. James points out that Daisy’s friends at SHIELD are the ones who are trying to stop what they’re doing. However, Daisy defends them once again, saying that it’s not their fault, and they don’t know any better. However, James finds this irrelevant, as they’re on the opposite side, so it’s going to end badly for them. But Daisy has an idea: make them understand.
Meanwhile, Hive reprimands Dr. Radcliffe for the failed experiment. However, Radciffe says it would have worked if he had the right ingredients — he needs DNA from a living Kree. The DNA Hive gave him is from a dead host. Hive angrily grabs Radcliffe by the throat, saying he doesn’t need him. Radcliffe insists he can make this work, because everything he’s worked on has led up to this, and he wants it to work. Hive releases Radcliffe, then uncovers the Kree artifacts recovered from James, and warns Radcliffe that he should be terrified.
Go In, Kill Hive, Get Out
As the SHIELD plane approaches Wyoming, Coulson tells Mack, May and the rest of the ground team the plan: Go in, kill Hive, get out. Do not engage with the other Inhumans in town unless absolutely necessary. If Hive can’t be killed? Run.
Lincoln Takes Matters Into His Own Hands
Fitz and Simmons agree that they’re good, regarding their disagreement earlier. They also agree not to let work disagreements affect their relationship outside of work. As they walk past the lab, they see Lincoln inside — who injects the antitoxin into himself before they can stop him. Electricity shoots out of his body, and he collapses onto the floor. Simmons attempts to inject something into him to counteract the antitoxin, but Lincoln tells her not to, insisting that he can do this.
Mack and May Move In With Their Team
As the team sneaks into town, May recognizes James, who walks into the bar. She follows him in, and tells him that this area is authorized for HYDRA personnel only. He immediately begins hitting on her. She demands that he tell her what he’s doing here. He shows her — by using his powers on a pool ball. She pretends to be impressed that he’s an Inhuman. They sit down and have a beer together. James then tells her about Hive’s experiment of turning humans into Inhumans, and implies he can help her to get to the front of the line.
Hive Questions Daisy
Hive asks Daisy if she can defeat what made her — SHIELD. Daisy insists her friends will understand — she wants to put them through the experiment. Hive doesn’t think her friends want to do that, but Daisy says she has to at least try, and that it’s the only way to save them. Hive asks Daisy what happens if they turn on her and come after them? Daisy replies that she would rip their hearts out. This pleases Ward.
Lincoln Gets Some Bad News
Fitz takes care of Lincoln, who is laying in a hospital bed. Simmons breaks the news that in order to run more tests, she’ll need to drill inside his head to get a tissue sample.
May Uncovers Hive’s Location
James tells May a little more about Hive. May says she’d love to meet him, and James says he could arrange an introduction. May seems very interested, until James admits that he probably couldn’t do so right now. To change May’s sour mood, he says that Hive might be in the old abandoned mining facility. As soon as he says this, May hits him over the head with a pool cue, knocking him out. The rest of the team immediately heads toward Hive’s location.
When the team enters the building, Hive is nowhere to be seen. However, they find the Kree artifacts, which are lit up and sound like they’re emitting a radio signal. From above, Coulson’s team has detected an incoming object headed straight for the building, and orders Mack and the team to get out NOW.
They’re Coming
Meanwhile, Hive tells Daisy, “They’re coming for us” — “they” meaning the ones who made Hive, the Kree reapers.
A fiery, meteoric object crashes into the building that the SHIELD team has just run from. Coulson tells the team that it’s the Kree.
Two Kree reapers emerge from the building.
Hive reveals to Daisy that he sent the Kree a signal using the artifacts, which were to be used in case the Inhuman experiment got out of control. He says that these Kree are not from their home world, they’re reapers who exist only to hunt — and to find Inhumans. Daisy begins to get in a panic, since Hive himself said that these Kree reapers are the only ones who can defeat him. He admits that the reapers are his greatest fear, but he is confident that with Daisy’s help, they can rip out the reapers’ heart. Hive reminds Daisy that for the experiment to work, they need blood from a living Kree — and he wants Daisy to get it.
May Regroups with the Team
The SHIELD team members meet back up, and are updated about the situation. Mack wonders whose side the Kree are on.
Alicia
As a Kree reaper wanders down the street, one of the Alicias tries to distract him, while the other Alicia attacks. However, the Kree easily kills his attacker, then goes after the other Alicia. Before he delivers the killing blow to Alicia, she tells him that he should be proud of what they’ve become.
The Team Follows the Kree
The team holds back as they follow the Kree, who is taking out HYDRA agents. Coulson orders the team to follow it at close distance, but stay out of its cross hairs. Mack realizes that Hive and Daisy are inside the church that the Kree is approaching. May tries to stop Mack from moving in, reminding him that those aren’t his orders. But he says he has to try, and he’ll meet them at the extraction point.
Daisy Fights Back
The Kree finds Daisy and tries to attack her. However, she fights back and uses her powers to kill the reaper. She then tells Radcliffe to drain its blood.
Meanwhile, Radcliffe gets to work on draining the Kree’s blood. Just then, Mack shows up and says that Daisy is coming with him. However, Daisy protests, and says she’s doing this to help him, that it’s the only way to save him. She explains that they’re going to make him into an Inhuman. Daisy says that she’s not lost anymore, so SHIELD can stop trying to save her. Mack tries to tell her that Hive is a parasite that’s messing with her head, but Daisy tries to turn it around, saying that’s what SHIELD is doing to them.
Mack tells Daisy that he cares about her, but she says she wants him to leave. He lays down his weapon, and continues to plead with her, pointing out that part of her wants to come back, that something inside of her is resisting, and that’s how they found her through facial recognition. However, she denies it, saying that she merely slipped up because she wasn’t thinking like a spy anymore. Daisy tries to convince Mack that this is the way the world is supposed to be, but Mack disagrees. He then uses a device to dissolve the Kree body, to which Daisy responds by blasting him back with her powers.
Daisy continues to come after him, and fights him, but Mack tells her he’s not going to fight her. She continues to attack him, and tells him that she wanted him to be a part of this. As Mack lays on the ground, bloody, he tells Daisy to look at herself, and tells her she doesn’t have to do this. She responds by using her powers on him, directly above his chest, presumably killing him, as he cries out in pain.
Hive and the Kree Reaper Fight
The other Kree confronts Hive inside the church, and they fight, while May and her team hide around the corner, hoping that the Kree reaper will take care of Hive for them. However, May isn’t so sure. It seems like the reaper has gotten the upper hand on Hive, when Hive uses his disintegrating trick on the reaper, killing it. Coulson orders the team to take the shot on Hive now. They unload their guns at him, which seems to have no effect. Then they launch an RPG at him, which leaves a big gaping hole in his shoulder — however, it grows back. The team runs.
Emergency Evac
Luckily, May and the team run up just as Daisy is delivering her killing blows on Mack, and May shoots Daisy, causing her to stop attacking Mack. The team calls for emergency evac, and a containment unit is sent down. They carry Mack in, and take the containment unit back up to the ship. Hive goes to the injured Daisy.
Back at HQ
As Simmons patches Mack up, she comments that she can’t believe Daisy did this. Mack tells Coulson he was right about her. The team discusses how Hive wants to turn any human into an Inhuman, regardless of their genetic markers, and might have if Mack hadn’t splinter bombed the Kree reaper. However, they also realize nothing can stop Hive.
Simmons goes to see Lincoln, who is being kept in a locked room. She gives him an update on the failed mission, and he gets angry about being kept down there, as he wants to get out there and help. However, Simmons reminds him that his immune system is completely shut down, so he’s her prisoner until he’s completely recovered. She also breaks the news that the antitoxin didn’t work.
Daisy Volunteers
Hive shows Daisy and Dr. Radcliffe that he ripped out the Kree’s heart, as discussed. He then scolds Daisy for letting Mack not only destroy the Kree, but also let him get away. Daisy tells Hive that she’s finished with SHIELD. She also reveals that she has actual Kree blood pumping through her veins, that it’s what Coulson used on her after she was shot. She tells Hive that if he wants the experiment to work, drain her.
His Thoughts on Agents of SHIELD, Season 3 Episode 19: Failed Experiments
Daisy is really freaking me out in these “possessed” episodes. She seems perfectly normal, just following this maniac Inhuman till the end of the Earth. It seems as though, at least up until the end of the episode, she was torn on her feelings for SHIELD. It is interesting how this mind control (have I mentioned lately how Marvel over uses mind-control?) is different than most–she is not a zombie, but her priorities seem to be the affected part. Very odd.
It is too bad the experiment failed on Lincoln. We are getting close to the end of the season, so Fitz and Simmons are running out of ways to stop Daisy. I hope it doesn’t come down to having to kill her. Especially because it looks like Hive might have her on the chopping block already, since Daisy volunteered the fact that she has Kree blood in her, and wants to be drained.
Hive has been a formidable opponent for Coulson. So far, Coulson still doesn’t have a way to take Hive down. I had thought maybe the Kree would be the answer, but it looks like they are just chumps as well, when it comes down to taking Hive out at least.
We still don’t have the answer on who will be dying in SHIELD. Daisy had the vision, but we are still waiting for that death to play out. It looked like it could be Mack given how badly Daisy was beating him, but he escaped with his life. I guess it could be Daisy maybe–she was a part of SHIELD. I am not sure she still counts anymore.
I guess we will see what happens next. Things seem bleak for SHIELD though. They have no cure for Daisy so far, Hive is going to drain Daisy’s blood, and there could be a whole new army of Inhumans being created shortly, and Hive seems invulnerable. Not looking good.
Her Thoughts on Agents of SHIELD, Season 3 Episode 19: Failed Experiments
Well, the title of this episode was spot on, considering that that’s exactly what it consisted of: failed experiments. First with Hive’s experiment to create new Inhumans, then with FitzSimmons’ experiment on Lincoln to cure the infection. However, it seems like Hive has his solution — to drain Daisy of her blood, since she has Kree blood in her — while FitzSimmons appear no closer to a cure than they have been. But I have a feeling that somehow Daisy will survive. I don’t think they would kill her off. Whether it’s from being rescued, or because Hive sees her as too valuable of an asset to get rid of, or something comes up that interrupts them, or Daisy’s mixture of blood somehow enables her to survive, is yet to be seen.
In any case, just as we saw last episode, Daisy seems herself, except that her belief system has changed. It’s like she joined a cult or something. We can see that she still cares for her friends at SHIELD, even wanting to “save” them by putting them through the experiment so they can be like her. Even more, she wants to wait until Dr. Radcliffe has worked out all the kinks in the experiment before putting them through it. However, just like when someone gets sucked into a cult, she puts the Hive ideology first, ahead of her friends, wanting to Rip their hearts out if it turns out they don’t agree with her (which they obviously don’t). Now that her friends have shot her, there’s nothing holding her to them. I’m not sure how this is all going to work out, but I’m excited to find out!

I like how they really play up the cult aspect of following Hive. To me, Daisy represents that one member who wants to find her path. But, has doubts about the leader. I think she’ll be the one you ultimately betrays and kills Hive.
Worried about this season will end. Too many people (good guys) have died already.
This show is really amazing. I didn’t think I’d like it when I first heard about it but I absolutely love it.
