Recap of Agents of SHIELD, Season 4 Episode 5: Lockup
In a flashback, we see the ghost woman, Lucy, back before she was a ghost. She and her husband, Joe, are looking for the Darhkhold book, and find it. When they open it, the pages are blank. But then text suddenly appears on the page. However, to Lucy it looks like it’s written in English, while to Joe, it appears in German, his first language. They realize that somehow the book is reading them.
In the present, Coulson and Mack visit Joe Bauer in the hospital. He is seeing them as demons. They ask him where the book is, but he is seizing. He tells them that he buried it back where he found it, and tells them they’re too late, she knows. He flatlines. Meanwhile, we see that Lucy has gone back to where she and Joe originally found the book. But when she opens it, the text begins to appear, and then disappears. It’s as if it can’t read her now that she’s incorporeal. She finds she also isn’t able to turn the pages anymore.
Back on the plane, Coulson decides that they need to bring Elias Morrow into custody. Robbie says that if they’re going after he’s uncle, he’s coming too. However, Coulson and Mack say he’s staying on the plane. Robbie finds Daisy and talks to her, but she tells him to trust SHIELD.
Over at SHIELD HQ, Fitz begins to talk to Simmons about the Darkhold book, but she stops him, reminding him that her lie detection test is today, and she doesn’t want anymore secrets that she has to cover up. She is also upset with Fitz for keeping Aida secret from her, and wishes she were as good at keeping secrets as him.
As Coulson and May enter South Ridge Penitentiary to pick up Eli, Coulson asks May what she saw when she died, but May isn’t talking. When they meet with the Warden about the transfer, the Warden sees them as demons and fires shots at them, as they duck behind a table. May is able to knock him out when his gun jams. An officer comes in firing, but Coulson is able to use his transparent shield to block the bullets and knock her out. Other officers run toward them, also seeing them as demons. They barricade the door with a a file cabinet, and see on the security feed that Lucy and the other ghosts are in the prison. They notify Mack about this.
On the plane, Mack says they should assume Lucy is going after Eli. He sends Daisy with a team to extract Coulson an May, while he will leads a team to get Eli. Robbie again insists on coming, and Mack reluctantly agrees, since Robbie is the only one who can touch the ghosts. Mack reminds them that this is an ICER only mission, since anyone could have the psychosis.
Fitz arrives via Quinjet, and will be talking the teams through the mission via comms. Before they head out, he gives them devices with the serum to counteract the psychosis, which work like epi-pens, except it has to be injected directly into the brain stem, at the base of the skull.
Meanwhile, Simmons undergoes her lie detector test. She gets to a revealing question, and hesitates before answering, which triggers the monitors to turn red. The Director steps in just then, asking Simmons to come with him.
As Mack and Robbie walk down the middle of a cell block, Robbie recognizes a man in one of the cells and asks him in Spanish if he’s Fifth Street Locos, and seems to have a personal vendetta against him. However, Mack stops Robbie before he can do anything, saying that’s not the reason he’s here.
Meanwhile, Daisy’s team gets to Coulson and May, who have already begun fighting their way out. Coulson, May, and Daisy walk down a cell block and realize that the prisoners have Watchdogs tattoos, so the Watchdogs must be recruiting inside the prison. Just then, Lucy materializes on the other side of the cell door at the end of the hall, pulling a lever that opens all the cell doors of the prisoners, locking them inside with the prisoners. Then she disappears.
The only way for Fitz to get them out of there is to unlock all of the cell doors on that cell block. Coulson tells him to do it. They run, and the prisoners give chase.
The Director asks Simmons for her help with his debate against Senator Nadeer. He will wear an earpiece while she feeds him information.
Mack and Robbie look around the boiler room, and the ghosts show up. Robbie grabs a chain, lights it on fire, and uses it to kill one of the ghosts. However, then another of the ghosts walks through Mack, infecting him with the psychosis. Robbie grabs the guy by the neck, causing him to disintegrate. Mack injects himself with the serum.
Meanwhile, the Director goes live with his debate against Senator Nadeer. As planned, Simmons feeds the Director important facts and statistics. Nadeer brings up the prison conflict going on in Los Angeles right now, and while the Director declines to comment, he says that SHIELD has the situation under control.
At the prison, Coulson, May, and Daisy go through the cafeteria area, and the prisoners follow not far behind. As Coulson and May exit out the door on the other side, Daisy breaks off the doorknob on the inside, opting to stay behind and fight off the prisoners. Coulson demands that Fitz finds them another way back inside the cafeteria.
Mack and Robbie find Eli and break him out of his cell. Eli doesn’t want to go with SHIELD at first, but when he hears about Lucy Bauer being able to walk through walls, and that she has the book, he agrees.
Senator Nadeer strikes a nerve in the Director when she says she doesn’t think he’s the man for the job. He reveals that he’s an Inhuman.
Fitz finds Coulson and May a way into the cafeteria – through the trash chute. May finally tells Coulson what she saw when she died — him. But she tells him not to let it go to his head. They get into the cafeteria and rescue Daisy from a prisoner who is strangling her, and take out the other prisoners as well. Fitz informs them that Mack has Eli Morrow.
The prison is in chaos with prisoners out of their cells, fighting. Mack stays behind to help free a couple of guards locked in a cell with a fire. Robbie and Eli continue to meet with the incoming Quinjet. However, Robbie tells Eli to go ahead and he’ll meet him outside. Robbie goes back and talks to the Fifth Street Locos prisoner from earlier. Apparently this gang is responsible for his brother being paralyzed. The man tells him it was a hit, and that Robbie’s quarrel isn’t with him. Robbie goes Ghost Rider and burns the prisoner to death. The other prisoners see the flaming skull and what Robbie did, and go back into their cells, closing the doors.
Outside, Coulson, May, and Daisy meet back up with Mack, asking where Eli is. Robbie walks up just then, wondering where his uncle is as well. We see that Lucy has him in the back of an ambulance.
Back at SHIELD HQ, the PR guy tells the Director about his improved ratings since his announcement about being Inhuman. The Director then tells Simmons that her polygraph test from earlier had some alarming results, so he wants her to take it again. However, says that he doesn’t want her to do that, because then she would have to tell the truth about what she thought about his story he told during the debate about being a hero in Vienna. The Director announces that he is exempting Simmons from any further testing.
On the plane, May goes to talk to Daisy and calls her out for distancing herself from everyone. She tells her it won’t work — because of Phil Coulson. He won’t give up on her. Daisy says that she promised Coulson she’d see this operation through, but after that, she’s gone.
Coulson and May watch the security footage of Eli getting into the back of the ambulance with Lucy.
We see that Eli is with Lucy, who wants her to read the book, because she can’t. She says they are going to fix her, and then finish what they started. Eli touches the book, and text appears on the pages.
In the final scene, the Director meets up with Senator Nadeer in the back of an SUV. She shows him a photo of SHIELD working with Quake, as well as video of Ghost Rider walking around with his flaming skull at the prison. They also have photos of the body of the prisoner he killed. She knows he came in with SHIELD and left with SHIELD. She says that in 2 hours, these will be leaked to the news. The Director asks her what she wants.
His Thoughts on Agents of SHIELD, Season 4 Episode 5: Lockup
Yes! Another great episode of Agents of SHIELD with awesome Ghost Rider effects! Every time Robbie Reyes goes full flaming skull, I just can’t help but be in awe at how amazing it looks! But… is it weird that I kind of felt bad for that guy Robbie killed? He was just minding his own business, even when the rest of the prisoners were rioting, he was just sitting in his cell, reading. Will we ever get the full story behind why there was a hit on his brother? When will we find out just what Eli was up to with Lucy at Momentum Labs? I am definitely invested in this storyline.
Then there’s the Director. I loved how Simmons handled herself with him, but what is the real story behind Vienna? Is he not to be trusted? What kind of deal is he making with Nadeer to keep the photos and video of the prison break and Ghost Rider out of the media? This is not looking good… Hopefully we can get some real answers soon. But so far, it’s been a great season!
