American Horror Story: Coven episode Recap: The Axeman Cometh, the Details
The Axeman Dies
This week’s episode of American Horror Story: Coven begins with a person using a type writer–writing a letter, it would seem. The year is 1919 in New Orleans. The letter is narrated as it is typed, and the person speaking is The Axeman. He seems to be a serial killer. We see him kill a husband and wife. We see that he has put a classified ad out, and he makes a proposition–any household that has a jazz band playing with be “excused” from his axe. The girls in the witch academy house debate whether to appease him or not. One girl refuses to appease him and we learn they are a part of the coven.
The Axeman, hiding in plain sight, walks home and hears the jazz music playing at every house. The coven house is playing opera however, rather than Jazz, and The Axeman pays a visit. Armed, he walks the house, and enters a room with a girl using Tarot cards. He stops the record player, and warns her about his intentions. The Axeman attempts to kill her, but he is subdued, and pierced to death by several witches hiding in the room.
Zoe Searches for Madison
In the present, Zoe is going through Madison’s stuff. She winds up in the closest, and finds a hidden hatch, which contains all sorts of stuff. Old stuff, including a spirit board. Zoe talks with Nan and Queenie, and she makes an observation that the number of witches has dwindled. Zoe wants to find Madison, and to keep an eye on each other. The 3 of them make a pact, drinking Absinthe.
Zoe wants to use the spirit board found, to locate Madison. They begin answering questions, and find a murdered spirit in the house. The spirit says that they killed him, and the name spelled out is The Axeman.
Fiona is receiving chemotherapy–so we know she has cancer. She is able to read minds now, and she remarks that she never had that ability before. She is picking up the depressed thoughts of the other chemo patients. It is too much for her, and she leaves. A doctor tries to get her to stay, and she finally agrees. She tells the doctor that she is doing the treatment for her daughter. Not for herself. The medicine is restarted, and she seems to react further to it. She then says that she “Just wants to belong to somebody”.
A Deal with the Devil–Or Someone Similar
Back at the Coven, Zoe is researching the Axeman, learning his story. The young witches realize that the witches from 1919 killed the Axeman. Zoe wants to continue communication with the Spirit board, but Nan and Queenie refuse to help. She begins to ask the board questions alone. She offers to free him in exchange for Madison’s location. He spells out “Attic”, which is Zoe’s next destination. She enters it, and finds an awful smell. She finds Madison’s body in a chest, and the tongueless butler, Spalding, grabs her from behind.
Fiona is at home, and Cordelia has come home. Her husband is with her. Cordelia is rather angry, and scarred severely. When her husband touches her, Cordelia gets a vision of him with the redhead. Hank tries to deny it, but Cordelia threatens him, and both she and Fiona demand he leave. Cordelia then sees flashes of Myrtle’s burning. This breaks Cordelia, and she weeps.
We see that Zoe was able to subdue Spalding, and Queenie, Nan and Zoe torture him for information. Spalding admits to the murder, but tells them they can’t turn him in. Queenie then opts to voodoo pain him with a hot spatula. Zoe is not convinced that Spalding is the murderer, however.
Raising The Dead
Next we see Misty Day tending her plants. She has Myrtle buried, and is watering her, as she lays buried. Kyle has returned to her, and Misty washes him down. He seems to be freaking out. Kyle has some flashes of his mother, and he begins to freak out. He smashes Misty’s radio, and Zoe walks in. She asks for Misty’s help.
Next we get a brief scene of Marie Laveau. Cordelia’s husband tells her, “We have a problem”. We learn that Hank is actually a witch hunter, and then we get a flashback to Cordelia, interviewing the girl that her husband killed. Then we get a flashback of that girl, pyro-kinetically killing her boyfriend after he breaks up with her. Meanwhile, as Cordelia and she talked, he was listening. We learn that Marie has hired him to kill the Coven witches, and all Salem descendants. Maria gives an ultimatum–bring back the witches’ heads and burn the coven down, or he faces death.
Back with Zoe, she has chained up Kyle. Misty comments that she and Kyle belong together. We see that Zoe has brought Madison’s body to Misty, to bring back to life. Misty says she is too far gone at first, but after some insistence, she agrees. Misty and Zoe begin reviving her, until she bursts awake.
Cordelia’s Bad Day Gets Worse
Back at the Coven, Zoe tells Nan and Queenie to keep quiet about Madison. Meanwhile, Cordelia takes some medicine, and we see him–The Axeman. Meanwhile, Zoe, Nan and Queenie talk with Madison, who is not quite sure what is going on. She doesn’t remember exactly what happened to her when she died–but remembers only black.
The Axeman demands his release. He tells Cordelia of the lie Zoe told of giving him his release. The Axeman threatens Cordelia, and Zoe and the other witches hear Cordelia screaming. Zoe looks for a book that will help The Axeman cross over. They begin reciting a spell, and when done, they head upstairs. It looks like the Axeman has gotten his wish, and he is released. He leaves the Coven and walks down the street.
Fiona and The Axeman
Fiona is at a bar, and notices her hair falling out. The Axeman has come to visit her, and Fiona seems smitten with him. The episode then ends.
Josh’s Thoughts: American Horror Story: Coven, Episode 6: The Axeman Cometh
I liked this week’s episode of American Horror Story, more than the rest this season so far I think. Zoe’s search for Madison was nice to see, as it seemed like most people just kind of gave up on her. I had a feeling we would be seeing more of Madison, as it was weird that they would get rid of her. Now that she is back from the dead, I sort of wonder if there will be the “undead hook-up” with Madison and Kyle getting together. I also wonder when she remembers Fiona is her killer.
Cordelia has become an intriguing character now. She now has seen portions of her husband’s true nature. Now that he has been put on notice by Marie, it will be interesting to see what happens there. Based on his conversation with Marie, he seems to have some feelings for Cordelia, even though he is completely twisted. Although he is not quite as twisted as initially thought (twisted that he had to sleep with the redhead he killed, but his killing makes a little more sense now that we know he is a witch hunter).
I guess the biggest question is what the Axeman plans to do with Fiona. Does he know that she is a witch? And either way, is his plan to kill her? I guess we do not know yet, since it was just a glimpse of a scene. Overall, this episode certainly explains some things, and seems to be on a better track for me. I actually am a little excited for the next episode!
Violets’s Thoughts on Season 3 Episode 6 of American Horror Story: Coven, The Axeman Cometh
Things have calmed down a bit since the last episode, but that doesn’t mean that things are any less interesting! For the first time, we see a new time period: 1919. Not only that, we see the witch academy in its heyday during that time as well. Will we be seeing more flashbacks to 1919 now that the Axeman has been introduced into the story, and since it looks like he will remain a part of it through his interactions with Fiona? It seems that Fiona’s wish of having one more great love affair before she dies may be coming true with the Axeman. But how long until he turns on her?
So, a “Spirit Board” huh? Guess they didn’t want to deal with the licensing to use the name “Ouija Board”! I’m not sure what the point of them drinking the Absinthe was. I thought some crazy things were going to happen as a result, but not so much. Between last episode and this episode, Zoe seems to have really stepped up as a leader in the coven, what with Madison having been gone. Will that dynamic change now that Madison is back, once she gets back to her normal self? That is assuming she will get back to normal, but she seems pretty normal right now. Unlike poor Kyle, who now has to be chained to the wall. Will he ever get better?
Finally, things make sense about Cordelia’s husband. He seemed pretty pyscho killing that girl he was with, but him being a witch hunter hired by Laveau explains a lot. I wonder if Cordelia realizes that the redhead girl Hank was with was the girl she had interviewed for the witch academy, or if her vision wasn’t detailed enough to see that. It seems like the latter, or else she would have been even more alarmed than she already was. The question is whether Hank really loves Cordelia, or if he has just been pretending all this time.
I’m also wondering why Cordelia and her mother are all of a sudden getting powers that they never had before? Cordelia’s new power seems explainable, in that it is trying to compensate for her lack of eyesight. But I’m not sure why Fiona all of a sudden has the power to read minds.
In any case, things look like they are going to get interesting when we see what Hank’s next step is, whether Madison will remember Fiona killing her, what’s going to happen between Fiona and the Axeman, and what revenge Myrtle will take once Misty Day is done healing her. Looking forward to seeing these things play out!
