Arrow Episode Recap: The Scientist , the Details
Meet Barry Allen, aka The Flash
Season 2 Episode 8 of Arrow, titled The Scientist, begins in the Applied Sciences warehouse of Queen Consolidated. An unseen force bursts through the front door and kills the two guards with one hand.
The next day, Moira returns to Queen Consolidated. Isabel isn’t very happy about that, and tells Oliver that Moira returning to the company sends the wrong message.
Just then, Diggle informs Oliver about the break in. Diggle, Oliver, and Felicity go check it out, and Officer Lance is on scene as well. The security camera only got one guy on video before the camera got taken out, and they figure the rest of the crew came in later. However, Barry Allen from the Central City Police Department’s C.S.I. comes in and tells them it was only one very strong guy that did it. He thinks an industrial centrifuge was stolen, and shows them where it was ripped out of the ground. Lance pulls Felicity aside and asks her to inform their “mutual friend” about this.
At the office, Diggle informs Oliver that Barry Allen was right, the only thing missing is a centrifuge. Felicity shows them security footage from across the street from the warehouse, showing one man breaking down the door. Just then, Barry Allen shows up. Apparently Felicity invited him there so he can help with the investigation because he seems to know more about this case than they do. Diggle gets the feeling that Oliver might know more about it than Barry, though.
Felicity and Barry Work Together on the Case
At home, Oliver apologizes to Moira about what happened at the office. He suggests throwing a “Welcome Back to Queen Consolidated” party for her. Thea agrees.
At the warehouse, Barry and Felicity investigate the case. Barry analyzes traces left behind by the robber’s footprints. Barry talks to Felicity about the Vigilante, and seems to think he has partners. Felicity asks why Barry is so interested in the Vigilante, and he tells her that his mom was murdered when he was 11, and they never caught the guy. He thinks maybe the Vigilante would have. Barry’s analysis shows that the soil from the robber’s footprints contains sugar.
Roy brings Thea to meet up with Sin in the alley behind the club. She tells Roy that her friend Max is missing. Thea volunteers Roy to help find him, and she’s coming too.
At the Queen Mansion, Malcolm surprises Moira. He says Moira made him the man he is today. He also demands that Moira tell Thea the truth soon.
Oliver and Diggle show up at the warehouse. Barry and Felicity fill Oliver in about the sugar. They tell him that a truck was stolen from a nearby sugar refinery, which matches the make and model of the truck the thief used to steal the centrifuge. Just then, an alert on the computer shows that the truck was just used to rob a blood bank. Barry says they should give this info to the local police, but Oliver says he’ll take care of it. Oliver tries to ask him about the similar case he mentioned he was working on in Central City, but doesn’t offer any details, just says it’s similar. Oliver takes Diggle aside and asks him to look into who Barry Allen really is. Diggle again tries to ask Oliver what they’re up against, but Oliver ignores him and walks away.
Arrow’s Attack Doesn’t Go So Well
Arrow drives up on a motorcycle and jumps on the stolen truck. He repeatedly punches the driver, who is wearing a black mask, but he is not affected. The driver punches Arrow once, and he goes flying onto the windshield. Arrow breaks through the windshield and stabs an arrow into the guy’s leg – or at least tries to. The driver shoves him out of the truck. Oliver lands on the ground and looks at the arrow in his hand, which apparently just barely penetrated the driver’s skin.
Back at the Arrow Cave, as Felicity tends to Oliver’s injuries, Oliver confesses to Felicity and Diggle that he has seen men with abilities like that before, and tells them about the serum on the island that Ivo was after. However, he says Ivo is dead, along with everyone he injected with the serum. But he thinks someone is trying to make more of it. He asks Felicity to analyze the blood on the arrow he stabbed into the truck driver, because based on the sedative used, they could figure out where he might strike next. Diggle reports to Oliver that Barry is not who he says he is.
Felicity and Barry analyze the blood from the arrow, which Felicity claims she got because Oliver has connections. Barry is excited that the Vigilante is working the same case as them. She then makes it clear that she does not like Oliver, and invites Barry to a work party as her +1.
Sin brings Roy and Thea to her friend Max’s place. They find a flyer about a blood drive, sponsored by Sebastian Blood, which happened to be on the same day Max went missing. As they exit the building, a man is watching them, and he calls Blood to tell him that people are looking for Max. Blood says, “Then they should find him.” Blood has a guy with him, along with several batches of blood.
Barry Lied; Moira’s Party is a Dud
As Felicity and Barry are flirting at the office, Oliver walks in and reveals that Barry is not full CSI, but merely an assistant, his boss doesn’t know he’s Starling City, and there is no similar case. Barry explains that his mother was murdered — and Oliver jumps and says it was by Barry’s father. Barry says his father didn’t do it, but he is serving a life sentence. When Barry was 11, there was a man who came into their house like a tornado, a blur, and his father tried to fight him. Barry tried to help, but suddenly found himself 20 blocks away from his house. Now he looks into cases nobody believes is possible, thinking he might be able to find out who killed his mother, and free his dad. He apologizes for lying, and leaves. Oliver reiterates to Felicity that Barry did lie about who he was, but she tearfully points out that they do the same every day.
Oliver, Thea, and Moira come downstairs to attend their party — which is very sparsely attended. Roy gets a call from Sin saying that she found Max. But he lies to Thea and says Sin just asked him to come by, and leaves. Oliver surprises Felicity with Barry. Felicity and Barry slow dance together. Isabel gloats to Oliver at the bar, but apologizes. Moira and Isabel don’t seem to be getting along very well, when Oliver intervenes.
After the party, Moira asks a man if he has made contact, and the man says yes, and that her information was gratefully accepted. Oliver comes in and apologizes to Moira about the party. He then gets a call and leaves. Moira seems to want to tell Thea something — but only tells her that she loves her.
Back at the lab, Barry gets off the phone with his boss, and tells Felicity he has to head back to Central City. They have figured out the sedative in the thief’s blood, which shouldn’t be too hard to track. They exchange an awkward goodbye.
Roy meets up with Sin at a crime scene, where they are saying Max OD’ed. Sin points out he wouldn’t be able to donate blood if he was an addict. Roy takes a picture of Max’s body, and quickly leaves when a cop says something to him. The cop is the same guy that was watching them earlier.
Barry to the Rescue
At the Arrow Cave, Felicity is able to use the info about the sedative to track it to an ARGUS bunker. Before Oliver heads out, she informs Oliver that judging by the condition of his arrow, the thief’s muscle density is almost equivalent to that of concrete. However, Oliver says he’s beat someone like this before. Just then, they see from a video feed that Roy has left his signal for Arrow.
Arrow meets up with Roy in the alley, and Roy shows him the picture he took of Max. Arrow tells him to stay away from that, but Roy doesn’t want to listen. Arrow shoots Roy in the leg to slow him down.
At the Queen mansion, Malcolm sneaks into Moira’s room. Moira tells him that he will not go near Thea or set foot in her house again. Malcolm points out that even the Vigilante couldn’t kill him, but Moira knows someone who can: Ra’s Al Ghul. Malcolm’s Undertaking violated the code of honor of the League of Assassins. Now that Ra’s Al Ghul wants to kill Malcolm so badly, Moira advises him to run. He says, “This isn’t finished” as he leaves.
Arrow is attacked when he shows up at the bunker. His arrows and trick arrows seem to have no impact on the thief, who says he is merely a follower of his brother, who saved him with the serum. They continue to fight, but the thief easily flings Oliver across the room, and injects a couple of vials of an orange substance into Oliver’s leg.
Felicity and Diggle find Oliver unconscious, and pull the vials out of his leg. Felicity is unable to determine what he was injected with. Diggle wants to call 911, but Felicity has a better idea: call Barry, who has just missed his train. At the train station, he is hit with a dart, and passes out. When he awakens, he is in the Arrow Cave, and sees Arrow lying on a table. Felicity asks him to save Oliver.
Flashbacks
In the flashbacks to the island, the group is following the directions on the hosen to get to the Japanese submarine. However, Slade has to take a break. Shado and Oliver speak privately, and Shado asks who Sara is. When Oliver explains, she seems disgusted with him.
As they continue walking, Oliver comments that Shado and Slade seem like they’ve gotten pretty chummy. Just then, they reach their destination and find the submarine.
Upon boarding the submarine, they find the “miracle” serum, but Sara says they need to give Slade a sedative first, or else he’ll die. Unfortunately, they aren’t able to find a sedative. They hear Ivo and his men boarding the sub above them.
Oliver tells Slade that the serum could save him or kill him. Slade apologizes to Shado for not telling her how he really feels. He then tells Oliver to inject him with the serum. Slade convulses and cries out in pain. Blood flows from Slade’s eyes, just like what happened to Max, and he dies. Oliver and Shado hug in grief, then Ivo’s men enter the room.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 2 Episode 8 of Arrow: The Scientist
I thought this was a pretty good episode of Arrow. Oliver’s island world and his current world are colliding, and things are starting to get interesting. It was a welcome change to see Arrow getting pushed around a little, and actually have a real challenge in an opponent who far outmatches him. Oliver seemed pretty helpless both times that he faced the centrifuge thief this episode, even though he claims to have beaten someone with those powers before. I’m curious to see upcoming island flashbacks to see how he did it, because right now it’s very hard to believe! This is just one guy that is able to easily overpower Oliver and his arrows, what happens when there are more? It seems pretty obvious that Sebastian Blood is behind this resurgence of miracle serum, and we know that he is trying to build an army, so how is Oliver going to handle a large army of men with powers just like the thief, when he can’t even handle the thief?
I was a bit disappointed that it looks like we won’t be seeing Malcolm Merlyn for awhile. I was excited about his return last week, so it’s a bit of a letdown that he’s already gone so quickly. I guess it was just so that the show could be like “Hey, Merlyn’s alive! And he’s Thea’s father!” and then get rid of him quickly to save him for a rainy day. It was pretty cool how they brought up Ra’s Al Ghul though.
Something that surprised me about this episode was that we will be seeing more of Barry Allen. When I first heard that the Flash was supposed to be introduced this episode so that there could later be a spin-off show, I assumed it was going to be a quick in and out, one episode introduction to him. But with Felicity bringing Barry into the Arrow Cave and asking his help to save Oliver, it looks like he’ll be around longer than I expected. I did find it a little odd that Felicity seems to have gotten over her obsession with Oliver so quickly though. However, I guess even if she does like Oliver still, it’s not going to be like she would tell Barry that, since she and Barry obviously have some chemistry and there’s a possibility that she could have a relationship with him, like it seems she’ll never have with Oliver.
Oh, and it was weird how Oliver shot Roy in the leg! Even if it was to protect him, to slow him down and keep him away from a dangerous case, it seemed a bit uncharacteristic. How is this going to reflect on Roy’s opinion of the Vigilante now? Maybe he’ll start thinking the Vigilante is not such a good guy after all.
In any case, I am looking forward to the midseason finale, where it looks like we’ll be learning more about Blood’s plans for the miracle serum, and getting to know Barry Allen a little bit better!
