Episode Recap of Arrow, Season 4 Episode 6: Lost Souls
The episode begins with a flashback to 6 months ago, and we see Ray shrinking as there’s an explosion at Palmer Technologies.
In present day, Oliver, Thea, and Oliver’s campaign manager, Alex, talk over lunch. Alex asks Thea on a date, but she politely declines.
Meanwhile, Felicity has been spending a lot of time at work trying to trace Ray’s message, without success. Curtis tries to convince Felicity to take a break. Just then, Oliver walks in. For a moment, it seems that Curtis is on to Oliver as being the Green Arrow, but then Curtis says that his jaw’s not right. Felicity reveals to Oliver that Ray is alive and that she has to help him.
At Laurel’s place, Laurel and Captain Lance spend some time with Sara.
Oliver forces Felicity to come home with him so she can shower and take a nap. He asks if there’s anything he can do to help, but it seems he’ll be useless unless he knows how to code. She does say she’ll accept his support though. Just then, Felicity gets an alert on her phone. She opens her laptop, and is able to video chat with Ray. He has his suit with him, which his captors want for its tech, but we see that he is shrunken and encased in a glass container on a desk.
Later, at the Arrow Cave, Felicity explains things to Oliver and Laurel. Ray has also said that at Palmer Technologies he has schematics for a device that can resize him. Felicity heads out, and Oliver offers to go with her, but she curtly tells him there isn’t anything he can do to help.
At Palmer Technologies, Felicity and Curtis take a look at the schematics for the device. They have everything they need — except a quantum manifold, which they can only get at Kord Industries, which is Palmer Tech’s biggest competitor. Just then, Felicity’s mom shows up. It seems that Oliver agreed that Felicity was in need of her to visit. Felicity isn’t very happy to see her, and sends her back to her place.
As the Arrow Team goes to Kord Industries, Felicity and Oliver argue about her mom. Everyone else is listening in to their argument. Oliver hangs from above and enters the security code, letting everyone else in. But security has a quick response time and they are soon found out. Sara repeatedly punches a security guard, until Laurel calls her off. They successfully leave with the quantum manifold.
Just then, Ray shows up on Felicity’s computer for a video chat, and she reports that they have gotten the quantum manifold. Then she sees Damien Darhk’s face show up behind Ray.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Felicity tells Diggle and Oliver that she saw Darhk with Ray. Oliver says they have to wait and see what Lance finds out, while Curtis works on building the device. Felicity figures out that Oliver has already made dinner plans with her mother and is upset, being that there are more pressing matters at hand. However, Oliver assures her there’s nothing she can do in the meantime.
Meanwhile, Darhk talks to Ray, saying his engineers have been unsuccessful. Darhk threatens Felicity, as he has intercepted Ray’s message to her.
Back at the loft, dinner hasn’t gone as planned. Donna senses there is tension between Oliver and Felicity, so she leaves to get some takeout. Oliver and Felicity argue. She says that what’s happening to Ray is her own fault, that he was sending distress calls for weeks after she left, and she didn’t know about them because she was too wrapped up in Oliver. She doesn’t like that she has lost herself in Oliver. He says he’ll give her some space until she figures things out.
At the Arrow Cave, Oliver tries to man the computers himself. Oliver tells Diggle about his argument with Felicity. He wonders why Felicity chose him. Diggle reassures Oliver, and says sometimes relationships just need a little time and space. Diggle gets a message from Lance that he has a meeting with Darhk in 20 minutes.
Lance meets with Darhk and offers to help him a little more in exchange for Darhk helping him out with Sara. Darhk doesn’t appreciate being summoned by Lance, and promptly leaves. However, Lance reports Darhk’s position to Diggle, who follows Darhk’s car.
Donna has a heart to heart with Felicity, and tells her that Oliver is not like her father. Felicity says it’s too easy to lose herself in him, but Donna says that’s how it’s supposed to be, that Oliver’s lost himself in her, and that they’ll find themselves in each other. Just then Felicity gets a text from Oliver that Dig has Ray’s location.
The Arrow Team meets up at the Arrow Cave. They decide that Curtis has to go and resize Ray from the inside of the very secure Latin Building. Sara joins back up with the team as well.
Oliver prepares to sneak inside the Latin Building, but a masked figure knocks him out. When he comes to, he is inside the building, and chained by his wrists. Darhk confronts him, and dismisses the masked figure — who it turns out is Diggle. Everyone else gets into position. Diggle disengages the security system, while Felicity base jumps with Curtis and they crash through the window. Gunfire breaks out as Laurel, Sara, and Felicity infiltrate. Meanwhile, Darhk approaches Green Arrow, and is about to remove the hood, but Oliver kicks Darhk, breaks free from the chains, and fires an arrow a Darhk — which Darhk easily deflects. Darhk then uses his powers to start strangling Oliver with the chains. But Oliver uses a device that causes a bright flash, and disappears while Darhk is distracted.
Felicity, Curtis, and Diggle find Ray, who is wearing his suit. Curtis fires the device at Ray, breaking the glass and changing Ray back into his normal size. Diggle radios to Sara, Laurel, and Thea that he has Ray and that they need to go. However, Sara strangles a man first, killing him. Oliver finds the others, and they all leave.
Oliver, Diggle, and Felicity return to the Arrow Cave with Ray, who tells them about his experience being small. Felicity tells him that his medical reports show that he is fine and there don’t seem to be any side effects. Oliver fills Ray in about Damien Darhk. Ray warns Felicity that they overheard his message to her, but she says she knows she’s a possible target. Felicity offers to take Ray to his company, but he says until he decides to come back from the dead, it’s her company.
At Laurel’s place, Sara is distraught, talking to Laurel and Thea. Sara says that Thea told her this was a side effect of the pit, and she thought she could fight it, but she couldn’t stop herself, and felt better. Sara says she has to deal with this differently than Thea, and that it’s time that she start over. Thea and Laurel try to convince Sara not to leave, and tell her that she can have a normal life. However, Sara is set on leaving, saying she’ll go visit their mom, then move on somewhere else until she figures it out. Laurel and Sara share a tearful hug.
Felicity returns home to Oliver, and thanks him for helping save Ray and for being so understanding. Felicity says they’ll be fine, because they found themselves in each other. They share a passionate kiss, and then some.
Lance sits at a bar, drinking club soda, and Donna happens to sit down next to him. They talk about their daughters, then introduce themselves to one another.
At Oliver’s campaign headquarters, Thea asks Alex to get a drink later, and he agrees.
Damien Darhk’s assistant tells him that they were able to recover some residue from Ray Palmer’s dwarf star alloy, and use it to fashion it into a power source. Darhk opens a box with interesting markings on the panels, which he lays out flat on the table, and tells him to test it on this.
Flashback
Oliver takes Reiter and Conklin to the chamber where Constantine took him. Reiter uses the orb as a blacklight revealing a message from the ancients leading to a very special gift. Reiter tells Oliver to go to the cove and take the workers there, until they find his gift. Reiter tells Conklin to go with him.
At the cove, a worker stands up to Oliver and says they need to rest. He agrees to give them 15 minutes for lunch. Conklin secretly goes the worker, Vlad, and asks him how he’d like his life to get a little bit better. Meanwhile, Oliver brings food to the woman in the cave. He asks if she’s seen Reiter do anything mystical or magical. She says that he has been religious and she has even seen him bless the prisoners. Oliver says he has to go, but will come back as much as he can.
When Oliver returns to the cove, Vlad attacks him, and they fight in the water. Vlad begins to drown him. However, Oliver fights back and breaks Vlad’s neck, killing him. Just then, Conklin walks up with the workers, and tells Oliver he better have a story to go along with that body.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 4 Episode 6 of Arrow: Lost Souls
Well, that was pretty easy, relatively speaking, to rescue Ray from the clutches of Damien Darhk and restore him to normal size, and all in one episode! Now we can add one more to the growing list of Legends of Tomorrow characters that have been introduced — or re-introduced — to the parent shows of Arrow and The Flash. Although, it seems like Sara is already moving on.
Speaking of Sara, I was a little surprised that not only would she venture back into the field so soon after her soul had been restored, but that she suffered from the same side effects of the Lazarus Pit that Thea did. I had assumed that by Constantine restoring Sara’s soul, that would eliminate Sara’s bloodlust. But apparently it just made it so that she was a coherent person, rather than a wild savage, and put her on the same level as Thea in regards to side effects. I’m wondering if this bloodlust will ever be cured, either for Thea or for Sara, and if Sara will carry this bloodlust into Legends of Tomorrow.
I was a little disappointed that Curtis didn’t figure it out that Oliver is the Green Arrow. He’s a smart guy, so it seemed like he would be able to put two and two together. But the jaw is off? What?? Come on, I want someone to just be able to call him out for once! Ah well, I’m sure Curtis will become a part of the Arrow Team at some point down the road.
So now it looks like Lance and Donna may become an item. Interesting. I wonder how long until they figure out who each other’s kids are. I’m also wondering if this means that Felicity’s mom might be around for awhile longer, or if they’ll have a long distance relationship that will cause Donna to come into town more often. Though it’s possible that it could just be a little fling. Who knows? Also, this could lead to Damien Darhk getting more leverage over Lance, in that he’ll now be able to threaten the woman that Lance cares about, which will also double as him going after Felicity, since that has been foreshadowed.
Josh’s Thoughts: Arrow, Season 4 Episode 6: Lost Souls
It came as no shock really—Ray Palmer was still alive. I understand how Ray went small, but I am curious how Darhk got a hold of him. I didn’t quite catch that storyline myself, but maybe I missed something? Either way, we knew he wasn’t dead, as he was going to be appearing in the new show Legends of Tomorrow, so he would have to come back some how. I actually like Ray Palmer as a character, so I was fine with him coming back. He seems like an Iron Man mixed with Ant-Man, given how smart he is supposed to be, yet awkward, and having that whole shrinking ability now. I am curious to see how much that shrinking ability is used.
I have a feeling that Ray will be pulling an exit soon, like so many CW shows tend to do. They get rescued but then decide that the best thing for them to do is leave town. I guess its understandable, given he has his own show to get to, and Arrow is pretty crowded as it is, but it is always weird seeing these characters abruptly leave right after being saved.
The one thing that did kind of bother me this episode is the thievery that Team Arrow decided to use. Stealing the device that was needed to save Ray just seemed a little dirty to me. But I guess they had to get it somehow.
As for Darhk, it looks like he has what he was looking for, so we can expect to see Ray’s technology used for nefarious purposes. I guess we will have to wait and see what that is.
