The episode begins with the Arrow Team tracking Adrian Chase to an arcade, along with a few ARGUS soldiers. However, he escapes via a secret tunnel.
The next day, Mayor Queen faces a press conference about Chase. Meanwhile, Felicity asks for Helix’s help with finding Chase. They say they’ll help her if she helps them hack into ARGUS. Felicity discovers than an ARGUS agent by the name of Jordan Pierce had an unsecured cell phone pinged regarding the info about Chase’s whereabouts. We see Pierce get into an elevator — then when the doors open again, he falls over dead. Felicity’s Helix friend kneels over Pierce’s dead body.
Oliver, Dinah, and Lyla go to the scene. Lyla determines that the cause of death was blunt force trauma, and takes the necklace that Pierce was wearing. Felicity sends them the security video, and we see Pierce flying around everywhere — due to it dropping 40 stories. Curtis and Felicity determine that the elevator was hacked, and Felicity secretly realizes who did it. She tells Curtis she’s going to ask Helix for help finding out.
Over at City Hall, Lance and Rene have been meeting with the relatives of Chase’s victims. After they finish, Lance brings up Rene’s daughter, and the fact that Curtis had offered to set Rene up with a lawyer to get her back months ago, but Rene says he’s not ready.
Felicity confronts her Helix friend, Elena, who says she didn’t mean to kill Pierce, she was just trying to knock him out. Elena says that ARGUS took Cayden James, founder of Helix, 8 months ago. He had created a device that can recognize a heartbeat — which can be used to locate Adrian Chase. We see that Elena took something from Pierce’s body.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Lyla tells Oliver and Diggle that ARGUS security requires two security keys for entry. The necklace that she took from Pierce’s body contained his security key — however, it was a sophisticated copy. We now know that the original security key is what Elena took. Oliver says that this security attack on ARGUS doesn’t feel like Chase. Lyla asks Oliver to escort an ARGUS agent back to base, since she’s the only one with a security key who’s not on lockdown.
Meanwhile, Elena has sent some mercenaries to get the security key from the agent. Felicity calls Diggle and tells him that she needs the team to let them get away with the security key. Diggle tells Oliver to stand down. The team stands down, and the mercenary drives away with the key.
At the Arrow Cave, Felicity explains that this is the only way to catch Chase. The others disagree with her, and Lyla refuses to release Cayden James. Felicity leaves to go help Helix.
Lance calls Rene into his office to talk to him about his daughter, Zoe. He brings up the fact that despite Rene having supervised visit rights, he has never visited her. Rene says that the reason he hasn’t visited is because he’s bad news — he hurt her. He had been heating up some soup for her, but passed out drunk, and when Zoe tried to get it off the stove, she burned her hand really bad. Rene leaves the office, saying Zoe deserves better than him.
Oliver, Lyla, and Diggle discuss the game plan. Lyla thinks it’s better to let Helix come to them. Oliver and Diggle regret having let Felicity get in so deep with Helix. Diggle tells Oliver that he’s the only one she’ll listen to.
Oliver shows up at Felicity’s place just as she’s about to head out. He tries to talk her out of joining up with Helix to break out Cayden James, but it doesn’t work.
The Arrow Team waits with Lyla at the ARGUS base for Helix to show up. Meanwhile, Helix gears up.
When Rene shows up at Lance’s office that night, he has Zoe there waiting for him. Rene and his daughter are happy to see each other. Zoe asks when she can go home, and Rene promises that he has a lawyer friend that will help get her to come home with him soon.
Helix’s van shows up — but not at the ARGUS base. A different van shows up at the ARGUS base. It turns out that Cayden James is being held at a different site, which Lyla didn’t tell the Arrow Team.
Felicity and Elena use special tablets which disable ARGUS security measures as they pass through. They use their two security keys to open the containment unit holding Cayden James. Just then, the Arrow Team shows up and fights Helix. The Helix team loads up James into their van just as Oliver catches up to them. Felicity stands in the way so that Oliver can’t shoot him, and they drive away. Felicity also puts up an electronic security wall that Oliver is unable to pass through, and runs off to join back up with Helix.
The Arrow Team returns to the Arrow Cave, defeated. Diggle is upset about his wife running an illegal black site, and leaves to go home. Dinah asks what he wants to do about Felicity, but he says there’s nothing to do. He sends them home so he can drink alone.
Rene tells Lance that he spoke to Curtis’s lawyer friend and put things in motion. Lance gives Rene some father to father advice that his daughter deserves to be with him and he deserves to be with his daughter.
When Felicity returns to Helix HQ, everyone is gone. Elena talks to her from a monitor, saying they have to sever ties with her due to her connection with the Green Arrow. However, they’ve left something for her — a device with some on the fly coding from Cayden James.
At home, Diggle and Lyla talk. Diggle says that this job has changed Lyla, and that he doesn’t know if he can get past it.
Felicity returns to the Arrow Cave with the biometric tracker to find Chase. She is upset with Oliver for not supporting her, after all the times she supported him. The tracker zeroes in on Chase’s location — he’s there. Suddenly, there’s an explosion.
Her Thoughts on Arrow, Season 5 Episode 19: Dangerous Liaisons
It seems that Felicity’s involvement with Helix has been suddenly cut off, though not by her choice. What does that mean for Felicity? Well, this is a question that doesn’t really matter right now because not only did Felicity get what she wanted (the device that could locate Adrian Chase, and which actually turned out to be a moot point because apparently he had already come right to them the moment he was located), but now there’s a bigger issue to deal with: an attack on the Arrow Cave, presumably by Adrian Chase.
But then again, what if Chase is not really there? What if the device was rigged to cause an explosion upon its use? I mean, wasn’t it such a huge coincidence that the explosion immediately followed him being located, and that he was located right where they were? I suppose it could be a coincidence. In which case this whole episode and Felicity “going over to the dark side” was all for nothing, because he was going to come right to them anyway. But Chase was mysteriously absent the entire episode, which makes one wonder just what exactly he has been up to…
I’m glad that Rene is finally reunited with his daughter, but it was odd that he didn’t participate with the Arrow Team the entire episode. Plus the whole story about his daughter getting taken away for burning her hand getting some soup was weird and didn’t seem very plausible that it would result in her getting taken, but what do I know, I don’t have kids. In any case, his daughter seems old enough that she would be able to get the soup safely, it’s not like she was some little kid. On the other hand, the same thing could have happened to anyone by accident, really.
And oh hey, no flashbacks this episode! I count that as a good thing. The episode flowed much better.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing the return of Chase! He’s a good bad guy.
