This episode of Arrow picks up right where the midseason finale left off, with Oliver returning to the Arrow Cave and finding Laurel waiting there. Laurel explains that Sara had her teleported to the Waverider. Oliver hugs her. Felicity comes in a few minutes later and hugs her as well. Oliver breaks the news to Laurel that her father is in rehab. Felicity reports what happened to Diggle.
Oliver visits Diggle in prison. Diggle doesn’t want to break out again, saying he would rather fight the charges legitimately. Oliver says he might know a good lawyer.
Felicity throws a welcome back party for Laurel at the loft. The mood is a bit somber considering that Billy hasn’t been buried yet. Oliver fills Rene in about the Lance sisters having a habit of coming back to life. Curtis would rather be out trying to find Prometheus so they can make him pay. Oliver makes a speech about embracing miracles as he welcomes Laurel home.
Later at the Arrow Cave, Rory catches Felicity running a DNA test on Laurel’s glass that she drank from. The DNA matches. Rory jokingly suggests that it could be Laurel’s evil twin. Felicity realizes that Laurel actually does have an evil twin — the Laurel from Earth-2, aka Black Siren. But before Felicity can call STAR Labs to check, the Earth-2 Laurel uses her Black Siren scream and gets away.
Cisco sends over video from 3 days ago when Prometheus broke Black Siren out of STAR LABS without tripping any alarms. Oliver heads out to help Diggle, while he tells the others to look for Black Siren.
Black Siren meets up with Prometheus, and says she would have rather killed them instead of roleplay. But Prometheus says her freedom and her life depends on following his orders.
Oliver meets up with the DA, Adrian Chase, and convinces him to represent Diggle because he needs someone outside of the military. Adrian tells Oliver about the circumstances of Detective Malone’s death and says that he’s covering it up.
Oliver gets a phone call from Black Siren, who asks him to meet up with her at Black Canary’s statue. Green Arrow waits for her while the rest of the team hides. Black Siren says she can help Oliver track Prometheus, and when she pulls out something, Felicity orders the team to attack. This angers Black Siren, who uses her scream to destroy the Black Canary statute. Oliver is able to shoot a tranquilizer dart into her, and she passes out.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Oliver is angry that Felicity ordered the team to attack. He reports that she had her phone in her hand, and that Prometheus forced her to help him.
Oliver goes to talk to Black Siren, who is being held in a cell in the Arrow Cave. She tells him her sob story, and he tells her to stop running. He offers to help her, and tells her that we get to choose who we are.
On their way out, Rene teases Curtis for getting his butt kicked. Curtis shoves Rene against the wall, and is upset that he has lost his husband, Paul. He doesn’t think he has what it takes to make it as Mr. Terrific.
Oliver tells Felicity that he talked to Black Siren, and is optimistic about changing this Laurel’s circumstances. Felicity doesn’t share his optimism.
Adrian visits Diggle in prison, where Diggle says there won’t be a trial, because he’ll get a bullet in his head during transfer.
Felicity brings Black Siren a glass of water. She says that when Oliver looks at Black Siren, he sees his shot at redemption, because he blames himself for Laurel’s death. The power goes out momentarily, and Black Siren takes the opportunity to use her scream and get away.
When Oliver returns to the Arrow Cave, Felicity confesses that she let Black Siren go — and that she put nanites in her water so they can track her. When Oliver berates her, she reminds him that he did the same thing to Anarky to track Darhk last year. He asks the others to leave the room so he and Felicity can speak privately. Oliver says that he doesn’t want to fail Laurel again, and also promises to get justice for Billy.
Rene apologizes for teasing Curtis. Curtis is working on a way to make the dampener portable. Rene says Curtis should appreciate what he can do rather than focus on what he can’t.
Adrian approaches General Walker and tries to prevent the transport, but it seems all the paperwork is in order. General Walker says he expects the prisoner to be in his custody in 24 hours.
Felicity finds Black Siren’s location, and the Arrow Team heads out. While Green Arrow fights Prometheus, Rene unsuccessfully takes on Black Siren. Meanwhile, Curtis gets the mobile dampener ready and approaches Black Siren with Felicity. Black Siren moves in to kill Felicity, but Green Arrow abandons his fight with Prometheus to try to talk Black Siren down. It doesn’t work, and Black Siren unleashes her cry on on them. However, Curtis gets the mobile dampener working, and Felicity decks Black Siren, knocking her out.
Adrian meets with Diggle again, who tells him that if he gets transferred, he’ll be dead by the time Adrian gets back to his office. Diggle punches Adrian, and Adrian tells General Walker that this offense puts Diggle within the county’s jurisdiction. General Walker says he’ll be back with a writ from the President.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Curtis tells Rene he was right — that he needs to start embracing what he can do for the team rather than what he can’t. Oliver tells Felicity that he’s keeping Black Siren at ARGUS, and that he hopes he can find good in her.
While Oliver and Felicity supervise the cleanup of the Black Canary statue, Oliver tells Felicity that he wants to keep his promise to Laurel to continue her legacy and find a new Black Canary.
Over at a bar in Hub City, a woman uses her voice to throw a couple of guys through the window who were harassing another woman.
Flashbacks
Going back to the Russian line of flashbacks, while Oliver is being beaten by Gregor and his men, a picture of Laurel falls on the floor. When Gregor asks why he didn’t return home to her, Oliver replies that it’s because she wouldn’t recognize him. Oliver asks Gregor how much Kovar paid him to betray his brothers — which earns Oliver another beating. He then puts a gun to Oliver’s head in order to get his obedience. There’s a commotion upstairs, and an arrow is shot through Gregor’s wrist. The woman with the bow and arrow introduces herself as Talia, and tell Oliver she’s been looking for him.
Her Thoughts on Arrow, Season 5 Episode 10: Who Are You?
Yeah, I thought “Laurel’s” story was kind of weird, about how the Legends were able to pluck her out of the timeline without causing an aberration. If you’ve been watching Legends of Tomorrow, you’ll know that although Sara would love to save her sister somehow, not only has she been going about it in a different way (by trying to kill Damien Darhk so that he doesn’t kill Laurel), but that she has accepted that she cannot try to save her sister’s life due to the fact that it would cause an aberration. Yes, Black Siren did say that they had figured out some way not to, but you’d think that we might have seen something about that in Legends of Tomorrow. On the other hand, if they wanted it it be a surprise, if this were actually the real Laurel, then they might go back and cover Laurel’s rescue on Legends of Tomorrow after the fact of her being revealed on Arrow. However, the story was all too convenient and fishy. I was just as suspicious as Felicity. And just as forgetful as Felicity about Laurel’s “evil twin” Black Siren.
I’m still not convinced about Felicity’s feelings toward Laurel. In this episode, and in previous episodes, she has seemed more broken up about it than anyone. I felt like the two barely knew each other and didn’t really interact much, but Felicity’s been acting like they were best friends or something. It could be more that she’s upset about Billy and this was a chance for her to let it out and take some sort of action toward an enemy.
As for Curtis, I’m glad that he’s found his place in the team. When he first joined the team, I thought tech was going to be more his forte anyway. It surprised me that he was an inexperienced fighter suddenly wanting to be part of the Arrow Team. But at the same time, we’ve watched him train with Oliver and at the Arrow Cave, so I actually bought his transformation into a crime fighter more than I bought Laurel’s back in the day. Don’t get me started on that…
Anyway, looks like it’s time to find a new Black Canary! Who is this woman in Hub City? Should we know who she is, or is she completely new? Guess we’ll find out soon!
