Episode Recap of Constantine, Season 1 Episode 8: The Saint of Last Resorts
The mid-season finale of Constantine begins in a convent in Mexico, where a woman has just given birth. When the baby’s father, Hugo, goes to get the mother a glass of water, a creature comes in, kills the mother, and takes the baby.
Back at Constantine’s place, Zed is back at sketching. Suddenly a woman appears in the middle of the room. It’s the nun that was at the convent. Constantine knows her as Ann Marie. It turns out she’s not really there, as Zed’s hand goes right through her. The apparition of Ann Marie tells Constantine what happened in Mexico and asks for his help, saying that he owes her. She gives him the address and disappears.
Constantine won’t let Zed come along, saying she needs R&R, despite Zed’s insistence that they need a Spanish speaker. Constantine admits that he slept with Ann Marie, and that she was at Newcastle with him.
Chas and Constantine make it to Mexico City and find Ann Marie at the convent. She explains to Constantine that she took a vow of service to repent for the sins of what happened during the seance. Later, she shows Constantine and Chas the room where the creature attacked the mother. Constantine sees a hole at the bottom of a wall, which Constantine says might belong to a wall dweller that likes to attack children.
Back with Zed, she goes wandering around Constantine’s place, opens a door, and nearly falls into an abyss.
Constantine tries to perform a spell with clear stones and some candles. When he speaks the words, the stones and the tablecloth they’re sitting on catch on fire. They quickly put it out. Constantine says that whatever was there covered its tracks. He then says they need a link to the child’s soul. Ann Marie tells them that according the local tradition, the placenta is buried in the family’s backyard. Constantine and Ann Marie go over to Hugo’s house.
At Hugo’s house, they find the burial site next to a tree. Meanwhile, the two discuss their past relationship and Ann Marie criticizes his ego. Constantine plucks a piece of fruit from the tree, which looks like it is covered with human skin. He cuts into it, and it bleeds. Hugo comes out just then, and Constantine explains that it’s human fruit — which means that the baby is alive. Constantine says he knows who took it.
They go inside and talk to Hugo. Constantine likens the human fruit to Adam and Eve’s forbidden fruit, and says not Eve, but one of her sisters took the baby. Hugo gets a phone call — another baby was taken.
Zed runs into Eddie, the nude model, at the art store, and he invites her out for drinks. He texts someone saying, “I got her.” While at the bar, Zed touches his hand, and gets a vision of a vault door shutting. She invites him back to her place.
Constantine, Ann Marie, and Hugo go back to the convent. It turns out that the baby that has gone missing is Hugo’s granddaughter. Constantine says that the killer is targeting Hugo’s family. Constantine and Ann Marie get into an argument. Chas comforts her, trying to explain that Constantine can’t do his job if he lets anyone in too close.
Meanwhile, Constantine goes over to the fountain and begins to cast a spell which will show the killer’s face in the water. However, he is interrupted by a nun, who says he is needed upstairs. When he declines, she threatens to snitch on him to Mother Superior or the police. He gets suspicious of her timing. He turns around and sees the nun’s face in the water. Then he tries to guess which of Eve’s sisters she is. It turns out she is Lamashtu. At that point, she shows her true form and begins to attack Constantine, holding him underwater. But he is able to stab her, and she runs off.
Zed brings Eddie to Constantine’s place, saying that she’s house sitting. They start making out, then she twists his arm behind his back and asks why he’s been following her. He says that her father wants her home, and calls her “Mary.” She gets angry, and tells him not to call her that again, then punches him out cold.
Constantine tells the others about Lamashtu, who likes to eat babies. They wonder why the babies are being kept alive. They head over to see Hugo’s grandmother, who was born in Chile. Hugo asks her why someone would be targeting them. She says that “La Brujeria” are back. Constantine explains that they were powerful warlocks in Chile long before it was Chile. She says that when she was a girl, her grandfather was one of them, and they lived to cause pain. Her father had run away.
Constantine and Ann Marie go outside to talk. He realizes that the Brujeria are behind the Rising Darkness. Constantine comes up with an idea. They go back to the convent and pour Hugo’s blood on a plucked chicken. Constantine will use a glamour spell to make it look like an infant, then they will follow Lamashtu to her baby stash. Constantine says he’ll dress up as a woman to make the hand-off, but Ann Marie says she’ll do it.
When Eddie comes to, he is standing with his hands tied behind his back. He tells her “our father only wants what’s best for you.” Zed doesn’t remember Eddie though. We learn that Zed spent most of her life in a locked room. He says that was for her protection, and that she’s their salvation. He says they’re in a crusade, their believers are everywhere, and they will always find her. A man and a woman come walking in, and the man points his gun at her. Zed holds her knife to Eddie’s throat and threatens his life, but the man shoots Eddie. The man takes out a syringe.
Constantine goes over the words to the spell with Ann Marie. He tells her that what happened at Newcastle was his failure, and she had nothing to repent for. However, it turns out she was the one who introduced him to the occult, and she thinks he is her failure. Constantine puts a necklace around Ann Marie’s neck which bears an icon of Pazuzu, Lamashtu’s former soul mate, who she now hates. Then Constantine and Ann Marie kiss, until she pushes him away, and he walks off, leaving her alone to perform the offering spell.
Lamashtu appears and picks up the dead chicken, which looks like an infant to her. Hugo steps out and shoots at Lamashtu, who runs away. Hugo and the others chase after her, but Constantine stops Hugo, warning him that if he wants his son alive, he has to let them do their job. Hugo lets Ann Marie take the gun from him.
Zed runs from the woman chasing her, but the woman eventually catches her, and they fight. Zed opens the door she had wandered into earlier, and pushes the woman into the nothingness behind the door.
Constantine, Chas, and Ann Marie go down into the sewer where Lamashtu went with the chicken. They hear babies crying, and find the infants in a cage. Ann Marie and Constantine pick the babies up and begin to leave, but Lamashtu stops them. Constantine guesses that she has to deliver the infants alive, so he threatens to snap the baby’s neck if she doesn’t tell him why she’s working for the Brujeria. Lamashtu answers that they’re expanding her domain on Earth. She says that there will no longer be a boundary, and that Hell and Earth will become one. Constantine takes the Pazuzu icon and casts a spell, which lights the sewer water up with blue flames, which attack Lamashtu, who disappears.
The man with the syringe finds Zed and injects her, telling her it’s time to go home now.
Chas takes one of the babies and brings it to safety, while Ann Marie is still holding the other baby. Constantine and Ann Marie see some sort of demon coming toward them. Ann Marie shoots Constantine so that the demon will come after him, while she runs away to save the innocent baby. Constantine lays in the sewer alone, bleeding out, while the demon heads toward him.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 8 of Constantine: The Saint of Last Resorts
Interesting that the mid-season finale left off on a cliffhanger. I think this is the first time in the series that you’ll have to actually watch the next episode to find out what happens next. Before this, the episodes all seemed pretty much stand-alone, and you could watch any of them at any time without being compelled to watch the next one for a continued storyline. Admittedly, there’s the tenuous tie of the “Rising Darkness,” but for the most part, the episodes seem largely unrelated. Of course, I suppose this is technically a two-part episode, considering the next episode has the same title with a “Part 2” added on, so the two are by definition related. Therefore, I’m not sure that forthcoming episodes will be quite so interrelated as this and the next one will be.
In any case, this episode does keep me interested in the series. For one thing, we got to learn a little more about Constantine’s background, through finding out about his relationship with Ann Marie, and also got a little more insight into his character as a whole.
In addition, we also learned more about Zed’s backstory, and why this guy’s been following her. No, it’s not quite spelled out for us yet, but you can kind of figure it out by reading between the lines. What I get from it is that she was in some sort of cult, where she was locked up, but she escaped. This guy Eddie, and the other two people that came after her, are also members of that cult, and the “father” that Eddie referred to is the leader of the cult. Since Zed doesn’t remember Eddie, that suggests that the cult has many members. Eddie called Zed “Mary” and said that she was their “salvation.” My guess is that she is called Mary in parallel to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and that this cult expects her to bear their savior. Could this cult be part of the Rising Darkness? Or do they actually think they are good somehow? I’m betting on evil. And now that they have Zed, things could get interesting. I, for one, am definitely curious to see what happens next!
