Episode Recap of Agents of SHIELD, Season 3 Episode 4: Devils You Know
Agents of SHIELD begins in North Hollywood, with Alisha, the Inhuman who can split herself, visiting some other Inhumans. She tells them they all have to stick together, and the others tell her about a mysterious email that they got. But Lash shows up to ruin the party. He kills Alisha’s clone, and then the other two Inhumans. Aboard the Jet, Coulson tells Mack and Daisy to move in. They do, and see that Lash has escape. Daisy gives chase. Back on the jet, Coulson deals with Alisha, who is having a breakdown from her clone dying.
Moving to the ground, Coulson and the team move in. Daisy and Mack are looking for Lash. Daisy asks for back up and Coulson says it is on the way. Daisy and Mack keep looking. Bobbi is investigating the murder scene, and she finds some “evidence” which seems to be from Lash. She and Fitz talk about Simmons and Fitz’s relationship.
Hearing helicopters coming in, Bobbi and Fitz evac out. Back with Daisy and Mack, they find a whole mess of soldiers–Rosalind’s soldiers. Coulson is also with them, and Daisy and Mack aren’t very happy to see them working together. Meanwhile, we see Lash in the shadows escaping.
At the scene of the crime, Rosalind is taking over the crime scene, while she and Coulson squabble about sharing intel and working together. Rosalind is suspicious of these Inhumans, realizing they must be people that were Inhuman before the outbreak.
Moving over to Ward, Hunter’s guns are delivered to him, and his assistant is impressed with Hunter’s toughness. It looks like Ward has a plan to being SHIELD down, and it involves gasoline. Moving over to Hunter and May, May is concerned there isn’t enough information Hunter is learning, and worries people could be in danger with whatever job Hunter is going on. Hunter is stubborn though, and wants to continue the mission to get Ward.
Back on the jet, Alisha is in bad shape, and Dr. Garner seems concerned about her. Garner then talks with Gemma, who seems to be resistant to help. She insists she is fine. Garner seems to get to her briefly, but still doesn’t want to talk about it.
Meanwhile, Daisy, Bobbi and Coulson investigate the mystery email referenced at the beginning of the episode. Coulson tells Daisy to share their intel on the email with Rosalind despite their protests. Coulson then meets with Garner about Gemma. He gives Coulson a hard time about sending Alisha into the field. But they’re interrupted by Agent May, who has come to visit. Coulson is ticked that Hunter dragged May into this, but May asks for help with back up so that Hunter isn’t murdered. May seems concerned for Hunter. But Coulson tries to bring May back into the fold, and figure out what happened with her and Garner. She keeps quiet about it, though. She just asks for help with Hunter. On her way out, May is confronted by Garner, and May seems ticked that Garner up and left her when they were away. Garner admits he was wrong to walk away like he did, but May chocks it up to being “even.”
Bobbi and Fitz examine the mystery hair of Lash’s, and it seems to be deteriorating. Meanwhile, Fitz comes across Simmons’ research on the stone. Simmons sees him looking at it and lashes out at him to keep out of her things. Fitz asks Bobbi about this and Bobbi tells him to let it “come from her.”
Daisy managed to trace the email, and thinks she has found out who Lash is, possibly. Daisy thinks that ATCU (Rosalind’s group) might be running this Lash as her agent. Coulson dismisses this, and tells Daisy to get ready to search this suspect, Frye’s house. ATCU happened to show up at the same time as well, which ticks Daisy off more.
SHIELD and the ATCU move into the building, and find a bunch of computer equipment, a dead guy and someone hiding in a closet. This person is freaking out, with open wounds on his face, which are growing. He tells Daisy to “get out!”
It turns out this guy is Frye, and is an Inhuman that has a physical reaction to other Inhumans, which is what causes the wounds on his face. Daisy uses her power to take him down, and the rest of the group comes in. Rosalind, Coulson, and Mack have a talk with him. He seems to have the ability to locate Inhumans. It looks like this guy was working with Lash to track the Inhuman victims down. Frye seems to think what Lash is doing is a good deed, and should be helped to take out the Inhumans.
The ATCU plans to take Frye into custody, and Mack and Daisy request to go with the transport. They hop aboard. Daisy and Mack get suspicious that the truck is going in circles, when it is attacked. The truck is invaded by Lash from the roof. In the fight, Daisy uses her power and overturns the truck. Everyone is knocked out, and Lash kills Frye. Daisy manages to see a shadow of what looks to be Lash turning from the “Inhuman” form to a human-looking shape.
Mack wakes up in the hospital, and he has an injured shoulder and a concussion. Daisy tells Mack what she saw, but she is interrupted by Rosalind. She is looking for Coulson, but he is off preparing to help Hunter.
Back at base, Bobbi talks with Gemma. Gemma apologizes for being snappy at Bobbi, but Bobbi tells Gemma she should talk to Fitz. Bobbi then sees Coulson preparing a mission, and Fitz tells her it is a mission to help May and Hunter. Fitz realizes she didn’t know, and he might have slipped up.
Moving back over to Hunter, he is picked up by some HYDRA crew to visit the boss-man. He is brought to a HYDRA base, and Hunter notices that the soldiers are gearing up for an attack. Hunter realizes he is meeting Ward, and makes a leap for a gun. A shoot-out begins, and Ward tells his men to look for SHIELD reinforcements. Ward seems to realize Hunter is alone, but May shows up to provide some back up. Coulson is too far away to provide any real backup, and tells May to evac out. But Hunter is set on staying, both to get Ward and to stop Ward from taking these weapons he supplied to Ward. Ward has a surprise though, throwing a cell phone towards May. It is showing a video of Garner in a store. Ward tells her that Garner is being watched, and will be taken out at his command.
Moving over to Garner, we see that Ward isn’t bluffing. Hunter refuses to back down, though. Back with Garner, the HYDRA soldiers lock a store, and hold some gas cans. Hunter rushes in though, and May is forced to provide backup. May radios to Coulson to help Garner. Ward makes a jump out of a window. He gets pegged by one of Hunter’s shots, but it is not a mortal wound. After the firefight, Agent May gives him the look of death. Moving over to Garner, we see what looks to be his body lying on the ground, and the store blowing up.
Back at base, we see Gemma working on her research. Fitz comes with a drink. Fitz asks her why she wants to rebuild the portal. She says that she has to go back, and needs his help to do it. She says something happened to her, and she wants to tell him the truth about “everything”…
Josh’s Thoughts: Agents of SHIELD, Season 3 Episode 4: Devils You Know
On this episode of Agents of SHIELD, I liked the confrontation between Ward and Hunter. I wished there was a little more build up to it though. I wanted to see Hunter work for HYDRA a little more, to see what decisions he would have to make to get into good enough graces with HYDRA to meet Ward. I would guess the writers weren’t too keen on that though, as it might make Hunter look like a bad guy. One thing I wonder about this meeting though–did Ward expect this to happen? It seemed pretty convenient that he had a trap all set up for Garner. It could either be coincidence or he could have figured out that it was Hunter somehow. I really like Ward as a bad guy, but really wanted Hunter to get that shot off. The wound likely isn’t mortal, but hopefully it is at least painful. I wonder if Garner is really dead though, as we only see the shoes of a dead person, and Garner isn’t confirmed dead. He could be more valuable alive to Ward than dead.
Moving over to the Lash storyline though–could Lash be working with the ATCU? I am not convinced yet, but it certainly is a possibility. I wonder if Rosalind was really driving them in circles, and was it so that Frye would be killed, or was is so that maybe the ATCU had a chance to capture Lash, using Frye as bait? I also wonder if this Lash character is someone who we will know who is, or if it is a new person we haven’t met before.
As for Gemma, I am curious to hear what her deal is, and it looks like next episode we will get those answers. As of this episode, it seems like a “Stockholm Syndrome” thing, where she is having a hard time re-acclimating back to Earth. But maybe there is more to it? I wonder if Fitz will help, and if so, will he end up going with her? Hopefully we end up finding out soon enough.
While this is probably my least liked episode so far, I still found it interesting. The Hunter/Ward storyline was the best, but I am certainly still invested in Gemma’s story, and figuring out who this Lash guy is. I guess we will find out a little more tonight!
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 3 Episode 4 of Agents of SHIELD: Devils You Know
Not the most exciting episode, except when we got to the shootout at the end. I was hoping Hunter and May could single-handedly (double-handedly?) take out Ward and his guys, but that obviously wasn’t going to happen. You knew Ward was going to get away. He would never be taken down that easily. I am glad that Ward at least got shot, and didn’t escape unscathed. That would have been annoying. It was a bit convenient that Ward just happened to have some guys with their eyes on Andrew. Not just with their eyes on him, but with him. Are that that many people in HYDRA that he could get his people over to Andrew that quickly? Or was this something he saw coming? And why Andrew? Why of all people is that someone that Ward would think to threaten? Why is Andrew and May’s relationship such a hot topic as of late? What happened between them? Hopefully we’ll find out that story soon. And hopefully Andrew managed to survive that attack somehow.
Other than that, we did get an interesting bit of information about Lash — apparently he’s a shapeshifter. Could Lash actually be a she? Is Lash a “devil we know” (as suggested by the title of this episode), or a devil that we don’t know yet? I’m guessing this will be a running mystery throughout the season.
But one thing that thankfully looks like it will not be a mystery for much longer is what actually happened to Simmons when she was on that other world? That is what I’m most looking forward to finding out!
