American Horror Story: Coven Episode Recap: The Replacements, the Details
Cat Got Your Tongue?
This episode of American Horror Story: Coven starts off with Fiona popping pills and drinking alcohol. Then we get a flashback to New Orleans 1971, and see a young Fiona at the witch academy talking to the Supreme of the time, asking when she first knew she was the Supreme. She explains that only the mastery of the “Seven Wonders” could prove that. We learn that when a new Supreme begins to flower, the old Supreme begins to fade, and Fiona believes she is getting stronger and the Supreme is getting weaker. Fiona cuts the Supreme’s throat, and she dies. The butler witnesses this. Back to the present, Fiona asks the butler, Spalding, “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue?” thus confirming that his tongue was cut out, and now we know why.
Fiona sits at a bar, waiting for a man to approach her. It looks like one is about to, but he goes and talks to group of much younger women, and Fiona remains ignored. Fiona goes to a doctor to discuss plastic surgery so that she can look younger.
LaLaurie is Punished for Being Racist
Zoe goes to visit Kyle’s mother, who reveals that she was about to hang herself, when Zoe called. Kyle’s mother is in despair over losing him, and Zoe assures her that she will see Kyle again.
Back at witch academy, Nan, Queenie, and Madison are watching the new neighbors move in. They particularly admire a young man who removes his shirt.
Inside, LaLaurie is watching Obama making a speech on TV and crying. Fiona comes in and LaLaurie says that the “magic box” lied. She is horrified and cannot believe that the president is black. Fiona affirms that it is true, and touts other major accomplishments of the black community. Fiona then informs LaLaurie that she is the new maid.
The girls are sitting down to eat, and Nan claims that she is not a virgin, but outs Queenie as one. Queenie says she is saving herself. LaLaurie, dressed in her maid outfit, brings food in for them, but refuses to serve Queenie. Instead, she throws her plate of food at the wall. Fiona comes in and asks what’s going on. LaLaurie explains that she will not stoop to serve “her kind.” Fiona informs LaLaurie that she will now be Queenie’s personal slave, because there is nothing Fiona hates more than a racist.
Zoe Retrieves Kyle from Misty Day, Madison Plays with Fire
Meanwhile, Misty Day is laying down on her bed next to Kyle, listening to Fleetwood Mac and singing along. She talks to him, but he doesn’t respond. Zoe comes to visit, and Misty shows her that she has healed most of his scars, making them far less visible. Zoe asks Kyle if he remembers her, and he brushes her hair with his hand. She tells Misty she has to take Kyle home to his mother. Misty is reluctant, saying they’re connected and tells Kyle she needs him, but Kyle shoves her away, so she lets him go. Zoe promises she’ll come back for Misty, but after Zoe leaves, she says, “No you won’t.”
Madison and Nan go next door to visit the new neighbor boy, whose name is Luke. Nan brings a cake, and Madison wears a skimpy dress. Madison tries to hit on him, but he seems more interested in the cake, which turns out to be his favorite, as Nan knew it would be. He doesn’t know who Madison is because he doesn’t have TV or internet. Luke’s mother comes in and says they have to go to church, to which they will bring the cake, and Madison insults their religion. Madison picks up the knife to cut a piece of cake, but Luke’s mother grabs her arm to stop her, and the knife goes flying across the room and sticks in the wall. Luke’s mom kicks both Madison and Nan out, and forbids them to talk to her son. On their way out, the curtains catch on fire. Madison says she didn’t know she could do that.
Cordelia and Fiona Have Health Problems, Zoe Takes Kyle to His Mother
Cordelia goes to the doctor and tells him that they tried alternative methods, but they didn’t work. The doctor tells her that he ran her blood work, and there’s a problem. He breaks it to her that she can’t have a baby.
Meanwhile, Fiona is at the plastic surgeon’s office, who tells her there’s a problem which prevents her from having elective surgery for the foreseeable future, as her blood work is alarming and her immune system seems to be in a “freefall.”
Zoe drives Kyle to his mother’s house, rings the doorbell, and leaves him at the front door, thinking that seeing his mother again will make him better. His mother hugs him and brings him inside, as Zoe watches from behind a tree.
Fire Power, Incest, and a Fertility Spell
Joan Ramsey, Luke’s mother, stops by to give Fiona a bible, and reports what happened at her house. Madison overhears and says that she conjured the devil. Joan tells her to stay away from them, and leaves. Fiona asks Madison to light her cigarette from across the room, and she does. Then she invites her to sit down and talk.
That night, Kyle is laying in bed, and his mother comes in to tell him how much she missed him. She mentions walking in on him when he took a shower earlier, and that she noticed his body is different. She says it doesn’t matter, and kisses him… a little too long. Then her hand goes a place that it shouldn’t.
Cordelia shows up at the same salon Fiona went to last week, looking for Marie. She is taken to a back room, where Marie is sitting on a sort of throne. Marie tells Cordelia she knows who she is. Cordelia asks about her fertility spell. We get a glimpse of what the spell would involve, including Marie eating a chili pepper and sacrificing a goat, among other things. Marie tells her they have 100% success rate, but it would cost $50,000 upfront. However, Cordelia is undeterred. Marie bursts out laughing and says she won’t do the spell on Cordelia for any amount of money, because she is the daughter of her sworn enemy. Cordelia is surprised to hear that Fiona was there.
Fiona Teaches Madison a New Trick, The Minotaur Comes for LaLaurie
As Zoe gets back to witch academy, Nan reads her thoughts and declares, “You like him.” Zoe gets a phone call from Alicia, Kyle’s mom, telling her that Kyle is back, except it’s not Kyle. Zoe says she’ll be right over.
Madison and Fiona are having lunch outside of a restaurant. Madison wants Fiona to teach her. Fiona tells Madison to make a guy crossing the street believe he is safer in the middle of the street. As he crosses, he stops in the middle of the street, making a couple of cars screech to a halt before he finishes crossing the street. Madison isn’t sure if she did that or Fiona, but we can tell by Fiona’s face that it was Madison.
Back at witch academy, Queenie is sitting in the kitchen, ordering LaLaurie to cook for her. LaLaurie sees something outside the window. She realizes it’s her houseboy, the one that she put the bull head on. He is now a minotaur. She tells Queenie who she is, and Queenie remembers her from the museum, which angers her. LaLaurie begs Queenie to help her. Queenie tells LaLaurie to hide, while she takes care of this. But first she cuts LaLaurie’s arm and puts her blood on a cloth.
Queenie then goes outside and lures the Minotaur toward her with the bloody cloth. Queenie declares that they both need love like everybody else, and they start to get it on.
Kyle Kills His Mom, Fiona and Madison Go to a Bar
Kyle’s mom comes into his room and tells him that Zoe is coming over for dinner. She starts freaking out about the fact that Kyle is different, rips his shirt open and points out that his body is different, and kisses his chest. She says that no one knows his body like she does, and no one else knows how to please him. She turns around and starts grinding against him, but this angers him. He grabs a trophy and bashes her head repeatedly.
Meanwhile, Fiona and Madison are at a bar. Fiona drinks and smokes, while Madison drinks and plays pool, and gets the attention of all the guys. We find out that Fiona has only been pretending to drink, while Madison is falling over from drinking so much.
Zoe Finds Alicia’s Body, Fiona Kills Madison
Zoe shows up at Kyle’s house and lets herself in. She discovers the body of Kyle’s mother, and turns around to see a blood covered Kyle.
Fiona and Madison return home, and Fiona tells her she’s the next Supreme. Fiona then reveals that she has cancer, and she refuses to go through chemo. She then has a pity party for herself, and confesses that she cut her predecessor’s throat. She gives Madison the same knife she had used to kill the previous Supreme, and commands Madison to kill her. Madison refuses and freaks out, then Fiona slits Madison’s throat. Once again, Spalding the butler witnesses everything.
Violet’s Thoughts on Episode 3 of American Horror Story: Coven, The Replacements
Wow, this episode had it all: incest, beastiality, murder, and even a voodoo ritual. There’s never a dull moment on American Horror Story. This was an especially cringe-filled episode though.
I wonder how far back the incestual relationship between Kyle and his mom goes. Is it something that she used to do to him when he was younger and powerless to stop her, and then stopped when he got older, but now that he’s obviously vulnerable, she’s taking advantage of him again? It seems like that would have to be the case if he was going to get so angry about it that he would kill her. Unfortunately, although Zoe thought that bringing Kyle back to his mother would cause him to become himself again, it turns out it was probably the worst thing she could have done. So what happens to Kyle now? My first instinct would have been that Zoe brings him back to Misty Day. However, when she left Misty Day’s cabin, Misty said that Zoe wouldn’t be back, and when she said that, it seemed like she was telling the future. So I’m not really sure what happens with Zoe and Kyle from here.
Really, Queenie? Giving it up to a Minotaur? Gross. Why does the guy still have the bull head on anyway?
What was up with Cordelia’s big 80s glasses this episode? When this season started, she seemed like a very confident and collected woman. It seems like she’s had a complete personality change though, coming off as very meek and mild, and the big glasses just emphasize that.
As for Fiona, was it her plan all along to kill Madison? It seemed like she was being very sincere when she was lamenting about being a poor Supreme, but I’m sure it could have all been an act. Or maybe she really did mean for Madison to kill her, but then when she saw how weak and hesitant Madison was being, she changed her mind at the last second and killed Madison instead, realizing that Madison would also be a poor Supreme. But then, why get Madison drunk?
Now that Madison’s dead, will Fiona’s powers be restored, and will her cancer go away? Or will the Supreme powers be transferred to a new candidate? Although, if Madison was the next Supreme, it is possible that she also has the power of resurgence and can bring herself back, like Misty Day did.
Looking forward to seeing the next disturbing thing that American Horror Story: Coven has in store for us!
Josh’s Thoughts: American Horror Story: Coven Episode 3: The Replacements
I have to say, if you want a disturbing show that is actually on a channel other than premium channels like HBO, Showtime, etc, American Horror Story is one of the weirdest, most disturbing shows out there. I feel sorry for Kyle, who is being molested by his mother. I would be disturbed to see what was happening when Kyle was normal, and not just a weird zombie who “takes it”. He sure does snap though and give his mother a deadly beating in the end…
Secondly, we have the disturbing Minotaur that seems to be attracted to Queenie, and what is more disturbing, she is drawn to it as well. I suppose everybody needs love, but I would think Minotaur might want to find another nice female Minotaur to shack up with? I guess there may be a lack of options for him out there… I guess we will see where that “relationship” will go…
Cordelia seems to be putting herself into a predicament, with her doctor’s visit, and subsequent visit of the voodoo doctor. It looks like she may have further kindled the war between Marie and Fiona. Regardless, I guess we have to assume that her previous spell with her husband was unsuccessful?
And Fiona decides she is going to break the “Circle of Life”, as she kills Madison, rather than she herself face the same end her predecessor did at her own hands. Is this the last we see of Madison? Will she be back? Who is this weird butler guy? Will he play a bigger role in Fiona’s life?
