Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode Recap: Girl in the Flower Dress, the Details
A Kidnapping and a Sunken Battleship
This episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. begins in Hong Kong. A street magician is performing, and some spectators call him out on his trick. He decides to show them up with using a flame from his hand. A girl hangs around after the performance, and seems to be interested in the magician’s fire trick. She goes back to his apartment, and they talk about magicians, and the magician shows her the fire again, and the man explains when he got the power. The girl tells him that she thinks “he is chosen”, which turns out to be a different meaning for her. Soldiers in fire retardant gear show up and kidnap him.
Meanwhile, Ward and Skye are playing Battleship on the plane. Ward seems impressed with Skye’s progress. Coulson and May are watching them play, and Coulson seems happy with her progress as well. Meanwhile, May makes an offhanded remark they should “go to the mat for a few rounds” referring to martial arts–we think. An alarm goes off, alerting the crew of their next mission–the mystery magician. Hi name is Chan Ho Yin, and we learn that S.H.I.E.L.D. was monitoring him, and asking him to keep his powers secret. The team talks to Chan’s “case agent”–the man who makes sure his powers are kept secret. He says that he believes the Rising Tide is responsible for leaking Chan’s powers, which causes the crew to immediately look at Skye.
The Search For the Rising Tide Hacker
Skye immediately denies the rumors, and accuses the team of automatically assuming she is involved. Ward believes her, that she didn’t perform the hack in question, but Coulson isn’t so convinced now.
Meanwhile, Chan wakes up in a room, and the girl in the flower dress has come to visit him. Chan assumes it was S.H.I.E.L.D. that took him for using his powers in public, but she explains she is going to test his powers and help make him more powerful. She even gives him a nickname–Scorch, and convinces him that she will help him be remembered.
Skye, in the meantime, is working on finding out who hacked S.H.I.E.L.D.’s system. She matches the hacker to Miles Lydon, a famous hacker from Austin, Texas. The team moves in to have a chat with him. Skye is on the ground searching for him, as well as Ward. Ward sees him, but Lydon notices Ward and flees in his car. Coulson pursues, but the hacker is able to mess with the traffic lights, causing Coulson to be gridlocked.
Skye’s Betrayal
Lydon gets home, and Skye is there waiting. Skye seems to know Lydon–intimately. She gets mad at him for hacking S.H.I.E.L.D., but puts that aside and they get “busy”. Skye also warned Lydon that S.H.I.E.L.D. was on to him. Skye seems to have gone traitor. We also see she is keeping some memory card on her, which seems to be what she is using to get data out of S.H.I.E.L.D. Lydon tries to apologize, but Skye tells him to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. off limits. She also says she has good people she is working with, so she has to be at least somewhat conflicted with her traitorous nature. Skye gets ready to leave, and Agent May is waiting at the door.
Coulson is MAD, and interrogates Skye. Skye tries to explain herself. Coulson tells Skye that he had May follow Skye. The team is clearly hurt by Skye’s betrayal. May, in the meantime, interrogates Lydon, and arrests him. Ward arrests Skye as well, and the team heads to Hong Kong.
Chan is Ordered Dead, Skye Finds out Lydon’s Secret
Speaking of Hong Kong, and Raina the flower dress girl is working with Chan in a lab and administers a drug that will enhance his abilities. He uses his powers and they are amplified. Chan seems pretty excited about his new enhanced powers.
Aboard the plane, Skye talks with Lydon. Lydon tries to spout “platitudes” as Ward states. Coulson meets with May, and Coulson waits for an “I told you so”. Simmons has come up with some evidence, which Ward delivers to Skye–Lydon accepted a million dollars for the information on Chan. Skye becomes enraged, as that stands against everything Skye and the Rising Tide believe in. Lydon reveals that the company that paid him was an ecological company dealing with Centipedes.
Meanwhile, a doctor named Debbie orders Chan “drained”, so Raina uses a gas to knock out Chan. Coulson and the team discuss Centipede, and realize it must be a worldwide organization, and think Chan must be being tested for his ability to stabilize Extremis–the drug that made other subjects explode.
Time to Stop Chan
Back with Chan, he is bound to a chair, and Debbie says she will be removing his blood platelets, since they seem to be the key to his power. Coulson and May prepare go to down, and Skye and Lydon continue to argue about their principles.
Coulson receives some S.H.I.E.L.D. help on the ground, and they move in. They bust into the lab, and locate Chan. The building is locked down, but Chan has broken free, and used more of the drug that gave him his powers. He then attacks the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
Aboard the plane, Ward frees Skye and Lydon to help with Chan. Coulson and May try to talk Chan down, but he isn’t listening. Skye says the only way the building can be unlocked is from the site, so she has to “go in”. Ward and Skye work to get the doors open, as Coulson and May avoid being “scorched”. Skye is able to get the doors open, but Coulson and May lose Chan. We see Chan, who finds Raina and Debbie. Raina locks Debbie out of the elevator she goes up in, and Debbie is “scorched” alive. Coulson then finds Chan. May surprises him from behind and injects him with more drugs. Chan is about to combust, and from the airplane, Coulson has Lydon hack the ventilation controls, venting the explosion to the roof, minimizing internal damage. Meanwhile, the people in the building escape their own scorching from the blast.
At the end of the episode, Lydon is offered a prison sentence or wearing a bracelet. The bracelet disallows Lydon from using electronic equipment. He is also stranded in Hong Kong. Skye says her goodbyes, and Agent May and Ward are having a drink. Skye asks Ward to join him in her meeting with Coulson, to which he answers, “I’m off the clock”. In the meeting, Coulson is still angry, and tells her she is still hiding something. He tells her she needs to come out with her secret right now, or she is done. She hands over the chip she was carrying. She then tells Coulson she is searching for her parents, since S.H.I.E.L.D. seems to be responsible for their disappearance. Coulson softens, and offers to help her. He then gives her a bracelet as well.
Mystery Incarcerated Man
The episode ends with Raina talking with someone in jail. She tells him about the advances they have made with Centipede, and will be moving to stage 2, whatever that is. Raina then asks the man to contact the “Clairvoyant”, whoever that is, in regards to “stage 3” whatever THAT is. Raina leaves the man, and the show fades out, ending the episode.
Josh’s Thoughts: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 5: Girl in the Flower Dress
I am not quite sure what I thought about this episode. I think i liked it, but again, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. unfortunately is not hitting home runs for me, as I hoped it would. Unfortunately, I am plagued by the acting, and the story so far hasn’t been too compelling so far. I keep hoping there will be an amazing episode that will blow me away, but so far I am not getting it.
It was kind of nice to see Skye’s traitor storyline payoff, and see what happens there. Still, Fitz and Simmons seem like tertiary characters, with no depth, and Ward is nearly as two dimensional still. I do like Agent May and Coulson though, they seem to be keeping me watching the show so far.
I am curious to see what “stage 2” and “stage 3” are, and who this mystery man is, along with his clairvoyant. But so far, there is not much else to really want to see so far. I really hope this show can stop disappointing me so I can get excited for it!
Violet’s Thoughts on Episode 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Girl in the Flower Dress
This was a fairly exciting episode. However, I’m still having trouble getting into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I’m still annoyed by Skye. We knew she was covering something up, and that she was a traitor in some respect, because of the text that she sent to the Rising Tide at the end of the 0-8-4 episode saying, “I’m in,” so it should not have been a surprise to the audience to find her in bed with the enemy, literally. Maybe some people thought that since she “proved herself” in that episode where she turned down the job that Quinn offered her, that she left her traitorous ways behind her and was now 100% on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s side. I didn’t believe that for a second. I always knew that sometime down the road she would show her true colors – but I didn’t think it would be so soon. Well, now we know that she sent that text to Lydon, and now we now her motives for infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., and it turns out they’re not so bad after all. So I guess that aspect of the story is over. Unless she’s in really deep cover. But I’m thinking not.
What I’m hoping is that since there’s been so much focus on Skye and her backstory all the way up through now, and now that a big chunk of that is resolved, that we can start getting to know the other characters better. Because I’m really getting tired of everything being about Skye.
It seems like at the very end of a couple of episodes, the show makes the effort to plant some seed of what is to come. For example, at the end of The Asset, we see that Dr. Hall is still alive in the gravitonium, and at the end of this episode, there’s talk of Stage 2 and Stage 3 and a clairvoyant. Is the show saving these little bits of info for a rainy day a ways down the road, or will these things make an appearance on the show in the near future?
Hopefully things will soon all come together in some brilliant way so that I can really get into this show, because unfortunately, it’s not happening yet.
