Full Episode Recap of Under the Dome, Episode 11: Speak of the Devil
The Teens Contemplate What the Dome is Trying to Tell Them
The four teens are laying on their backs in the barn, looking up at where the pink stars from last episode were, except it looks like they are gone now, and that the teens made chalk marks in their stead, and have connected the dots to make constellations. Norrie thinks the Dome is trying to communicate, and wonders what it’s trying to tell them. However, Joe notices four stars that are not part of any constellation, and thinks that they represent the teens. They notice that the chrysalis in the mini dome changed colors overnight, and they can see that it will be a monarch butterfly. The teens want to tell someone, but are hesitant, being that the Dome has been pretty clear about not wanting them to tell anyone, what with Dodee getting zapped by the mini dome. But they remember that Julia touched it without a problem, so they agree for Joe to go tell Julia.
Big Jim Begins to Turn Linda Against Barbie
At the police station, Big Jim has stayed true to his word and come in to tell Linda his story. He defends his actions of selling propane to Max, saying that it’s what’s keeping the town going. He then tries to convince Linda to go after a “real” criminal: Barbie. Big Jim tells Linda that Barbie was working as Max’s gambling enforcer. He implies to Linda that Barbie had something to do with Peter’s disappearance.
Max Takes Out Her Anger on Julia
Barbie’s still staying at Julia’s house, though no longer in her bed. Julia asks him to take her to see Peter’s grave so that she can get closure and they can move forward. While Barbie is upstairs changing, the doorbell rings, and Julia answers it. It’s Max. She pulls out a gun, shoots Julia point blank in the chest, and just walks away. Barbie hears the shot and runs downstairs. He immediately radios the situation to Linda, who is still with Big Jim, who implies that she shouldn’t believe him. He asks Linda for a ride to the clinic, since he can’t drive and keep Julia from bleeding out at the same time. She says she’ll be right there.
On her way to Julia’s house, Linda’s police car runs out of gas. Apparently someone siphoned gas from the car. But just then Phil pulls up and says he’ll give her a ride.
Joe gets to Julia’s house, and sees that she’s been shot. Barbie asks Joe to drive them to the clinic, even though he only has his learner’s permit.
Junior Quits and a Storm Starts Brewing
Angie and Junior are alone with the mini dome, and Junior starts talking about it being fate that they’re connected this way, and tries to kiss her. Of course, Angie immediately stops him, and tries to explain that it’s the four of them that’s connected, not him and her. She insists that they will never be together, and that once the Dome comes down, she’s gone, and he’ll never see her again. Junior responds by saying that he’s out of the mini dome group then. Angie tries to tell him they need him, but he just walks away, telling her that it’s love, and he’d rather live and die in the Dome than be apart from her. Meanwhile, a storm is brewing outside.
Big Jim comes out of the police station to see a (very fake looking) funnel cloud forming. Max walks up and they walk back into the station to talk. Big Jim tells her he knows it was her who shot Julia. She says she did it because Barbie told her “No.” He asks her where this is going, and she says that’s up to him and whether he steps out of line like Barbie did. Big Jim comments that it’s a good thing he’s single, when Junior walks up and Max turns sugary sweet. She introduces herself to Junior, and we can tell that she’s sending a message to Big Jim that she’ll shoot Junior if Big Jim doesn’t cooperate. Then she says she has some “business” to attend to on Bird Island and leaves. Junior asks his dad who that was, and Big Jim responds, “The Devil.”
Barbie Tries to Save Julia with Limited Supplies
Joe has a little trouble driving to the clinic when a tree branch falls in his path, but he is able to safely maneuver around it. Joe looks out the window at the funnel cloud, and comments that he thinks the Dome is angry at them. They get to the clinic, and it turns into a Prius commercial, with Joe plugging the car into the wall to charge, as Barbie carries Julia into the clinic. There aren’t many supplies left at the clinic, but Barbie uses what little is available: a pen, a plastic bag, and alcohol. Joe asks Barbie how he knows how to do all this, and Barbie says that he had to chest tube his team sergeant.
Big Jim and Junior Have a Heart to Heart
Junior follows Big Jim down into the fallout shelter, where Big Jim is keeping his arsenal of guns and ammo. Big Jim tells Junior that Max is going to destroy everything he’s worked for, namely trying to get the town back to normal, but that she’s trying to fill the town with drugs, liquor, and vices. Junior thinks she seemed nice enough though. Big Jim tells Junior that she wants to hurt him by hurting Junior. Junior offers to help, but Big Jim refuses. They have heart to heart about Big Jim being a single dad and doing the best he could. He tells Junior he doesn’t know how this will end, hands Junior some ammo, tells him to stay in the house, and not to open the door for anyone but him.
Dodee Intercepts a Radio Transmission
Over at the radio station Dodee sees lightning and wonders if that changes anything. Her radio is working again, and she hears a military transmission that confirms that they reviewed the tape from Visitors Day, that they saw Barbie in the Dome, and that he’s the one they’ve been looking for.
Junior Rejoins the Group, Barbie saves Julia, and the Storm Goes Away
Angie comes pounding on the door at Big Jim’s house, and tries to convince Junior to come back to the group. She thinks that this crazy weather was caused by Junior turning his back on them. Angie tells him, “We need you,” and Junior corrects, “YOU need me.” Angie gives in and says, “Fine, I need you.” The wind continues to pick up and causes a swinging chair to break loose and fly at Angie, but Junior saves her from getting hit by it. Just then, the funnel cloud begins to recede, and Angie says, “See? I was right.”
At the clinic, Barbie is working on Julia, when a tree branch comes through the window. Julia flatlines, and Barbie sticks a tube into her and begins to suck the extra air out. But just when it seems like they’ve lost her, there’s activity on her heart monitor. Joe says he has to go and tell them that Barbie saved Julia, just like Barbie saved him when the Dome came down. Joe thinks that maybe Barbie is there to save all of them, but Barbie doesn’t think so. Joe thinks that Junior was right, that the “monarch” is a person, and that person is Barbie.
Max Discovers the Fate of Her Mother
Max is walking on the beach and sees something in the water. When she investigates, she finds the dead body of her mother, with her hands still tied.
Barbie and Big Jim Team Up to Bring Max Down
Barbie asks the nurse to watch over Julia while he goes and takes care of something. The Prius product placement continues as Barbie unplugs the charger from the wall outlet and coils it up. Big Jim arrives and asks how Julia is, and makes sure that Barbie knows it was Max who shot her. Big Jim suggests that they work together to bring Max down, but Barbie insists they do it by his rules: they take Max alive, and then he’s done with Big Jim. Barbie accuses Big Jim of loving power, not the town. We also get some “monarch” type references about Big Jim wanting a kingdom, and Barbie swearing that he’ll do whatever he has to do to knock Big Jim off of his throne.
Barbie and Big Jim show up at the cement factory. Barbie sets an “alarm” just in case. Inside the cement factory, Max sneaks up behind Barbie with a gun. Max has a guy helping her. She tells Barbie that Big Jim killed her mother. Barbie accuses the two of them of being just the same. Max disagrees, and instead says that she and Barbie were good together. Barbie doesn’t think so, though, claiming she just paid him to do a job. Max explains that she’s giving him a chance to live — with her. Barbie can’t believe what he’s hearing, considering that Max shot Julia. Max says that Julia was never right for him. Max goes on to say that she had plans for Barbie, she trusted him, but he screwed her over, so he’s no different from Big Jim. Barbie checks his watch, and we see his “alarm” outside tick down to 00:00. Just then all the lights shut off, shots are fired, Barbie throws out some flares, and uses the distraction to take Max’s gun.
Linda and Phil get to Julia’s house, and discover that Julia’s car is gone. They assume Barbie took her. Linda asks Phil how well he knew Barbie. Phil tells her that Peter was in deep and literally bet the house, and lost, and Barbie was the collection agent. They jump to the conclusion that Barbie killed Peter and that Julia found out. Linda and Phil arrive at the clinic to find out that Barbie took off with Big Jim. Phil seems to think they could be at the cement factory, considering that Max set up a fight club there, and people lost money on Barbie yesterday. Linda orders Phil to get out of his car.
Big Jim Turns on Barbie
Big Jim and Barbie both have guns pointed at Max and her helper as they usher them outside. Barbie says he’ll go get the car so he can take them to the station. Big Jim says he already took care of Max’s “insurance policy” and she replies, “You have no idea.” While Barbie’s back is turned as he’s walking away to get the car, Big Jim shoots and kills both Max and her henchman. Barbie asks Big Jim, “What the hell did you do?” to which he replies, “As long as Max was breathing, she was a threat. Now she’s not. And neither are you.” But before Big Jim can shoot him, Barbie hits Big Jim in the throat and takes his gun from him. But just then Linda arrives and orders Barbie to put the gun down, as Big Jim lies and says that Barbie is the one who shot Max and the other guy, and that he was next. Barbie puts the gun down, puts one hand behind his back, and backs up to Linda. But he hits her in the face, grabs the gun, and runs off. Linda tells him to stop or she’ll shoot, then begins shooting at him upon Big Jim’s command, but she doesn’t hit him.
Big Jim Throws Barbie Under the Bus
At the radio station, Dodee informs Big Jim about the military transmission she heard about Barbie, that he’s the one that they’ve been looking for. Big Jim then makes an announcement over the radio, saying that Max and her business associate were murdered, and that an attempt was made on Julia’s and his own life. Of course, he says that Barbie is to blame for all of this, and that a warrant has been issued for Barbie’s arrest. He goes on to declare a State of Emergency since Barbie is on the run and armed. Big Jim says that once Barbie is brought into custody, he will be given a fair trial and that the People will seek the death penalty. Meanwhile, we see Barbie running through the woods.
The Dome Has an Upsetting Message for Junior, Angie, Norrie, and Joe — involving Big Jim
Junior, Angie, Norrie, and Joe all reconvene at the mini dome. Joe informs them that Julia got shot and that she died for a minute, but Barbie brought her back. He tells them that he thinks Barbie might be the monarch, and that the tornado went away right after he finished sucking the air out of her chest. But Junior protests, saying that the storm stopped because he decided to come back. Either way, they agree that something started it, and something stopped it. They decide to go to the big Dome together.
The four teens reach the Dome wall and touch it at the same time. They soon see the image of Big Jim standing in front of them, as spots of blood appear on his shirt, and blood begins to run from his nose. The teens look down and see that each of them are holding a bloody knife. Junior is visibly disturbed by the image, and is the first to stop touching the Dome. This breaks the teens out of the trance they were in, and they are no longer holding the bloody knives. Junior runs off to go see his dad. The remaining three think that the Dome is coming down, but first Big Jim has to die — and they’re the ones that have to do it.
Thoughts on Episode 11 Speak of the Devil
Violet’s Thoughts on Under the Dome, Season 1 Episode 11: Speak of the Devil
This was another one of those episodes that feel a little…off? I guess that’s the best word for it. I think it was the horribly fake looking funnel cloud that was the nail in the coffin for me. It just looked so terrible that it was a major distraction from anything else that was happening in the episode.
But anyway, so we have Junior just as obsessed with Angie as ever and thinking fate brought them together. Angie’s still freaked out by Junior after him locking her up in the fallout shelter, but she has to suck it up for the sake of the mini dome group. The members of the group operate on quite a lot of assumptions. First, that the Dome “trusts” Julia, so she’s okay to tell stuff to. Then Joe assuming that the Dome is angry. Why would he think that? And why would the Dome be angry anyway? Then Angie assuming that Junior leaving the group is what started the storm, and that the only way to stop the storm is for him to decide to come back. If that’s true, then why did the Dome throw a chair at her right after Junior decided to come back? Just how sentient is the Dome? Of course, then the ending where they realize that the Dome wants them to kill Big Jim by stabbing him. Um, okay, why would the Dome want that anyway? Is it more that the Dome was telling them to do it, or that the Dome was predicting the future? Once Joe and the others hear about Big Jim’s announcement that Barbie was the one who attempted to murder Julia and Big Jim, and killed the others, they’re going to know that it’s not true. And since Big Jim is the one who claimed that all this was true, they’re going to know that he is the one responsible for all that he is accusing Barbie of doing. How will Junior handle the news?
Max also seemed a little out of character compared to the last couple episodes. She has been portrayed as a cunning, clever, and strong woman, though evil. But in this episode, it seems to come down to her being resentful of the fact that Barbie spurned her for Julia. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or so the saying goes, and this is quite fitting being that Big Jim dubbed Max “The Devil.” Anyway, I felt like this episode lessened her credibility as being the big bad guy that she was initially portrayed as being. She just seems like she’s sulking that Barbie rejected her. Oh, and what did Max mean when she responded to Big Jim saying he took care of her insurance policy with, “You have no idea”? Was her insurance policy actually someone, or something, other than her mother? Maybe we haven’t seen the last of Max’s wrath after all. Only time will tell I guess.
Josh’s Thoughts on Under the Dome, Season 1 Episode 11: Speak of the Devil
My first thoughts of the episode were how abruptly Max was eliminated from the show. I wasn’t a big fan of her character anyway, but it was a sudden end. Barbie seems to be in big trouble now, since the only witness to Julia’s shooting is her, and so he has no way of clearing himself. With Big Jim setting Barbie in his sights, it is going to be tough for Barbie to clear his name, let alone survive.
Since Joe has come to think of Barbie as potentially the “Monarch”, Barbie might be able to make an ally with the “Four Hands”. Junior would be the biggest problem, since he is the son of Jim and has already expressed his dislike of Barbie. Sheriff Linda seemed to consider Barbie an ally, and considering the shadiness she has seen Big Jim involved in, hopefully she sees through Big Jim’s scheme.
I am curious to know why the military is looking for Barbie. Is he a deserter? Does he have some classified information? Hard to say until we get more information.
I would really like to see what the dome wants. Who is the monarch? There seems to be some disagreement among the four kids involved, and there are no definitive answers yet. The season finale is around the corner though, so hopefully we get an answer soon!
