Under the Dome Episode Recap: Exigent Circumstances, the Details:
Carolyn’s Discovery of the Mini-Dome
This week’s episode of Under the Dome begins with the mini dome lighting up pink again. Julia is still in the hospital in her coma. Barbie is hiding in the forest, while Big Jim makes a speech regarding the town pulling through. One resident demands door to door searches, and the crowd seems to agree with him. Jim “concedes”, and says they will begin searches. Linda disagrees with his move, but Big Jim seems to be at the mercy of the people, so it seems. Big Jim turns his speech into rallying the crowd, saying that they will survive this dome.
Back with the egg, Angie and Joe are discussing their vision they had and Angie seems to think they should kill Big Jim. Joe disagrees and Norrie jumps in, and they are trying to figure out who the “monarch” is. Joe insists that it is Barbie. Joe thinks when the butterfly is hatched, the Monarch will be crowned. Carolyn enters the barn though, and demands to know what the mini dome is. Norrie tells her it is the “heart” of the dome. Joe jumps in saying he thinks it is the power source. Norrie tells Carolyn that they found it, and it warned her of Alice’s death. Carolyn tells her to hide it since there are house sweeps going on. Angie tells them to hide the dome at Ben’s house.
The Hunt for Barbie and Dodee’s Warning for Big Jim
Back at the meeting, Linda has organized a party for the house to house sweeps. She tells the crowd to not harm people or break property, and tells them to not kill Barbie. Phil decides to help out Linda. Big Jim is still at the meeting, and Junior comes up, and warns his dad that he is in danger, and that someone is planning to kill him. Jim asks Junior how he knows this, but Junior remains vague about it. Jim then gives a job to Junior–to guard Julia in the hospital. He tells Junior that if she regains consciousness to tell him first before anyone else.
Dodee is in her radio station messing with her radio when she overhears the military discussing the egg and Barbie. Dodee then remembers the egg and finds the photo she took on her phone. Dodee heads to the station and warns Jim about the military message she heard.
Dodee’s Unfortunate Discovery and Death
At the station, Dodee further explains the egg that the military is looking for. Big Jim is intrigued. Dodee walks away to check on the radio station. While she is gone, Big Jim overhears the military talking about Big Jim, and they talk about the murder of the Reverend by Jim. Dodee overhears this message. Dodee gets really nervous, and Jim tries to justify his actions, explaining the danger the Reverend was. Dodee gets a little too inquisitive, asking who else was a problem. Dodee then puts together that Barbie is innocent. It seems that Dodee believes his speech about protecting Chester’s Mill. They get back to talking about the egg. Dodee says she can get the egg, and hopefully they can bring down the dome. Jim pulls his gun on Dodee, and warns her that the dome can’t come down. This sets off Dodee, who calls him a “sick bastard”. Jim shoots Dodee, and lights the station on fire.
Jim warns Linda about the fire at the radio station by walkie talkie. Phil overhears the message and is convinced it is Barbie’s doing. Jim tells Linda to get the fire fighting team down there to get the fire out. At the station, it is burnt to the ground, and Dodee was found inside. Phil is heartbroken, and Linda tells Phil, “Barbie won’t get away with it.”
Barbie and Angie’s Rescue of Julia
Back at the farm, Angie is leaving the barn but Barbie surprises her from behind. Angie believes Barbie’s story, and Barbie asks for Angie’s help — candy stripers, the volunteers for the hospital, have key cards to enter the hospital. Barbie tells Angie that if Julia wakes up, Jim will kill her and his story would fall apart.
At the hospital, Junior is asking the nurse how Julia is doing, which is not good according to her. The nurse goes to check on other patients. Meanwhile, Angie and Barbie have arrived outside the hospital. The plan? Barbie will hotwire the ambulance, sneak into the hospital, get Julia out, and drive away. Angie lights up a cigarette, I guess as a last hurrah?
Barbie and Jim have made it inside the hospital, and they locate Julia–guarded by Junior. Barbie makes his plan of taking out Junior, but Angie has a better idea. Angie puts on her candy striper uniform and plans to distract Junior. Angie walks out, and talks with Junior. Angie begins to ask him about his running off the night before. Angie asks about his trust for his father. She digs deeper asking why he is guarding Julia, and questions if Barbie actually is the shooter. Angie gets a little softer, and tells Junior, she “needs someone to talk to”. Angie convinces Junior to go somewhere private to talk.
Junior and Angie walk away, and Barbie gets into action moving Julia. Angie and Junior hug, and I am not sure how true Angie’s feelings are, but they eventually kiss. This was a mistake, as he realizes she has been smoking. Junior recalls the last time he saw her smoke–when Barbie gave her a cigarette. He heads back for Julia’s room.
Julia is gone, and Angie takes off. Angie runs out to Barbie, who is finishing loading up Julia in the ambulance. Junior is in pursuit, and warns people on the walkie talkie that Barbie is there. Junior charges Barbie, and they wrestle. Barbie is able to take Junior out, and Barbie steals his walkie. In the ambulance, Barbie tells Julia goodbye, and has Angie take her alone. Barbie surrenders to Linda. Phil stares him down, and gives him a swift kick to the face.
Illegal Searches and Seizures–Exigent Circumstances
Joe and Norrie have taken the covered dome to Ben’s house. Ben says the sweeps already hit their house, so it’s safe to hide it there. Inside, Ben sees the actual mini dome, and nearly touches it, but Norrie and Joe warn him of the risk. Joe and Norrie leave, leaving Ben to guard the dome.
Back at the barn, Big Jim and Carolyn are squaring off. Jim is demanding the search of the barn, while Carolyn refuses, since it would be an illegal search. Big Jim uses the excuse of exigent circumstances, then decides force is the way to go, and pushes Carolyn out of the way. Joe and Norrie come back at this time, and rush to help Carolyn. They are quickly subdued by Jim’s henchmen though. Opening the barn, it is empty, and Big Jim arrests Norrie and Joe. At this time, Jim receives the radio message from Linda that Barbie has been caught.
Barbie, Norrie and Joe in the Big House
At the police station, Joe and Norrie are held in separate cells. Norrie tells Joe they should have killed Big Jim. Joe says despite the problems, they shouldn’t kill. Big Jim comes in for a talk, and tries to coax Joe to “fix this”, meaning to tell him where the mini dome is. He offers him a deal: in exchange for the mini dome, Joe and Norrie can go home. Norrie chuckles at Jim’s speech. Jim enters Norrie’s cell to intimidate her. Norrie pulls a knife from her boot, with the intent to shank Big Jim. She makes a stab for Jim, but only nicks his arm.
Linda puts Barbie in a cell. He pleads his case with Linda, but Linda asks about Julia’s husband. Meanwhile, Carolyn has arrived and will wait until the kids are freed. Big Jim talks with Linda, and asks about Julia and Barbie’s status.
Norrie and Joe are taken from their cell. Barbie demands from Big Jim to know where they are going . Big Jim says, “an undisclosed location”. Big Jim says that they will be released if Barbie confesses in public to the crimes he “committed”. Big Jim then threatens Angie and Julia. Barbie agrees to confess if everyone is freed that has been “involved”.
Julia Awakens, the Mini-Dome Goes Crazy, Barbie Recants
Angie has pulled over, but hears on the walkie from Barbie that Linda is looking for her in the ambulance. Angie gets Julia back to the clinic, but is hiding in the storage room. Julia has awakened from her coma. Julia remembers she was shot–and that it was a woman. Angie brings her up to speed about their escape. Angie warns Julia about Big Jim’s accusation of Barbie shooting her.
Back at Ben’s house, the dome as began to emit an ear piercing sound, and Ben tries to bury it with more blankets. Norrie and Joe have made it to Ben’s house, and Ben tells them about the dome acting “crazy”. They rush inside, as Linda watches them from her car.
At the mini-dome, it is lighting up. Linda comes in to see the dome lighting up. The chrysalis for the butterfly begins to move. Meanwhile, Junior has walked to the big dome’s wall, and touches it.
Outside of the town hall/police station, Big Jim has Barbie cuffed. He makes a speech about maintaining order. He demands to have Barbie confess his crimes. Barbie refuses to confess, as he pleads “Not guilty,” and the town looks at him with anger.
Josh’s Thoughts: Under the Dome Episode 12, Exigent Circumstances
Now that Julia is awake, Barbie is in a much better position to survive if Julia can somehow publicly announce Barbie’s innocence to the town. She just has to make sure she doesn’t wind up alone with Big Jim. Junior seems to be again wavering on trusting his father. Perhaps he will be of assistance to Angie and Julia. Although I have a hard time seeing Junior wanting to help Barbie out.
If Big Jim’s secret gets out, what will happen to Jim? Does Jim meet his maker finally? Will the dome’s prediction come true? Or will Big Jim simply be locked up? This would leave a power vacuum though. Who would step up to fill the gap?
As for the big question–who is the “Monarch”? There seems to be several options: Any of the four “Hands” are possibilities, of course. From this episode, I would still include Barbie on the list, but it may be Ben, Carolyn or even Linda now. Hopefully the season finale will finally reveal this for us!
Violets’s Thoughts on This week’s episode of Under the Dome, Exigent Circumstances
This actually was a pretty good episode, for which I’m grateful, considering last week’s very fake looking funnel cloud. Big Jim is such a master manipulator, and I’m hoping the town sees through him soon, especially considering his murder of Dodee on top of everything else he’s done, and still plans to do. Kudos to Barbie for getting Big Jim to let the kids go free by telling him he would confess, but then not following through with the confession! I must admit, I was definitely having thoughts of Game of Thrones when Barbie was standing up there in front of the town — but I won’t say anything further about that because I don’t want to spoil Game of Thrones for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. But for those who have, you know what I’m talking about!
I did have a couple of issues with this episode though, such as when Barbie was saying goodbye to Julia after he loaded her up into the ambulance. He had told Angie that she had about thirty seconds, but he sure took his sweet time just standing over Julia and staring at her, then giving her a kiss and saying that he loved her. Um, was that really necessary?? It seemed like it took him about thirty seconds just to do that alone! In this case, time was of the essence, and Julia was unconscious anyway, so there was really no point in him doing all that, and if he was going to do something, he should have made it quick, instead of dragging it out like that. Angie could have driven away before anyone saw her. It was just really annoying and overly cheesy. Another issue is how much Linda trusts Big Jim and distrusts Barbie. Despite the fact that something went down between Barbie and Julia’s husband, Linda should know that Barbie would not have hurt Julia, and should question who might have done so. I really was expecting her to have been listening in when Big Jim went to talk to Barbie in his cell, but no dice.
Anyway, so the next episode is the season finale! I’m hoping we’ll find out who the monarch is — I’m thinking it’s Barbie — and that he’ll be “crowned” and displace Big Jim as the power figure under the dome. Will the Four Hands have something to do with that? Can’t wait to see how this season ends, and hopefully we don’t get too suspenseful of a cliffhanger!
