This Memorial Day holiday weekend did not really have any big surprises in terms of the order of the weekend’s box office, but the numbers for the new releases were lower than I had anticipated. X-Men: Apocalypse came in at about $65 million, and since I own this movie in the Summer Movie Draft I was hoping for a bigger opening weekend. This low opening weekend could significantly hurt my chances at making up any ground against Violet, who is doing very well at the moment.
Alice Through the Looking Glass did not fare much better, and I think a combination of poor reviews for the first Alice movie along with the time it took to get this sequel out made this movie tank at the box office. Making about $27 million, it looks like Jamie is going to have a hard time making up the difference to catch Violet as well.
Everything else falls in line with expectations. The Angry Birds Movie came in around $18 million, Captain America: Civil War came in at around $15 million, and rounding out the top five was Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with $9.2 million.
Here are the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $65,300,000
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $26,997,000
- The Angry Birds Movie – $18,750,000
- Captain America: Civil War – $15,379,000
- Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $9,274,440
- The Jungle Book (2016) – $7,111,000
- The Nice Guys – $6,515,000
- Money Monster – $4,350,000
- Love & Friendship – $2,496,000
- Zootopia – $821,000
Looking To This weekend
Looking to this weekend, we only have one big movie opening, which is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows. The first one did pretty well, making $191 million, and I own this in the Summer Movie Draft, so I am hoping for a big payoff for this weekend. Remember to get your votes in for our Summer Movie Draft Giveaway! If you have no idea what I am talking about, be sure to read about the giveaway and the rules here!
Note that Me Before You, the romantic drama starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the mockumentary comedy starring Andy Samberg, also come out this weekend. You may notice that neither of those two movies are included on our list of movies in the Summer Movie Draft. That is because they were not yet on the release calendar when we did the Draft. However, even though neither of those movies are part of our Draft, you can still feel free to vote for one of them if you think it will be #1 this weekend!
Last week we had a few people earn extra entries for the weekend box office! D. Rivera, Daisy, Francine Anchondo, Austin Baroudi, William Landefeld, and Matthew D all were able to score their 3 entries! Unfortunately, no one was able to get within the $5 million mark, as X-Men did seem to under-perform.
But now is your chance to see what you can do! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows certainly looks to be number one, but can you get within the $5 million?
