Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was the big release this weekend, and it did achieve the number one spot, but to my disappointment (considering I own this in the Summer Movie Draft), it only made about $35 million. The first movie opened to $65 million, so this was a big step down for the sequel, unfortunately.
As for the rest of the box office, as expected, X-Men: Apocalypse came in second, making over $22 million, and a movie called Me Before You also came out this weekend, and made over $18 million.
Rounding out the top 5 was the disappointing Alice Through the Looking Glass, making only about $11 million, and The Angry Birds Movie making $10 million.
As for the winners this weekend, again we had a number of people make the correct guess on the #1 movie, earning 3 points towards the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway! Tim, Austin Baroudi, William Landefeld, Matthew D, Francine Anchondo, and Daisy all made the correct guess with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Unfortunately, everyone overshot the box office, as again the top movie seemed to underperform.
Here are the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – $35,316,382
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $22,825,484
- Me Before You – $18,723,269
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $11,314,635
- The Angry Birds Movie – $10,214,076
- Captain America: Civil War – $7,829,479
- Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $4,863,635
- Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping – $4,698,715
- The Jungle Book (2016) – $4,445,272
- The Nice Guys – $3,453,344
Looking ahead to this weekend, we have a few more movies coming out. Two more of my movies are coming out in fact, with those being Warcraft and Now You See Me 2. Unfortunately, both movies are not receiving stellar reviews, so I think this weekend might put the nail in the coffin as to not being the winner of our little competition. It is very sad. For those unfamiliar, Warcraft is based on the video game series, set in a fantasy world called Azeroth, and revolves around the relationship of an invading race called Orcs from the world of Draenor, and their war with the humans. As for Now You See Me 2,, this sequel follows a group of magicians called the Four Horsemen, that seemingly are tricked into assisting a character played by Daniel Radcliffe. The other movie coming out is The Conjuring 2, another sequel which is again directed by James Wan. The last one was received pretty well, so this movie could pull in some impressive numbers.
This weekend looks like it could be a tough one in determining who will take number one. I think Warcraft will edge out the competition, but it will be a close fight I think between Now You See Me 2 and Warcraft. I also think The Conjuring 2 could sneak in as number one, given how well the first one was received. But make sure to make your guesses in the comments below, so you can get your entries into the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway!
