I had a feeling this weekend would be a tough one to figure out. I thought Warcraft might be able to pull out the win for the weekend given it feels more like a summer movie than the other two, but unfortunately for me, The Conjuring 2 did much better than Warcraft both critically and financially, in the US anyway. My other movie in the Summer Movie Draft was Now You See Me 2 which had a decent opening of $23 million. Unfortunately, given the lukewarm earnings of most of my movies, I am likely all but eliminated from the Summer Movie Draft. Disappointing.
The Conjuring 2 gave Michelle a nice boost in her dollar amount. If she can hit a couple big numbers in her movies, I think there is an outside chance of her making up some decent ground towards Violet. We will have to see how the rest of the summer plays out. I think the other person who has a shot is David, but he is going to need some big numbers for movies like Suicide Squad, Ice Age: Collision Course, and The Purge: Election Year.
As for people participating in the giveaway, unfortunately all guessers went with Warcraft! I thought we had some pretty good guess too, but unfortunately Warcraft underperformed.
Here are the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- The Conjuring – $40,350,000
- Warcraft – $24,356,000
- Now You See Me 2 – $23,025,000
- TMNT: Out of the Shadows – $14,800,000
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $10,000,000
- Me Before You – $9,210,000
- The Angry Birds Movie – $6,700,000
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $5,544,821
- Captain America: Civil War – $4,300,195
- The Jungle Book – $2,721,000
Looking to Movies Coming Out This Weekend
Looking to this weekend, we have Finding Dory and Central Intelligence coming out. Finding Dory is the sequel to Pixar’s Finding Nemo, and a shoe-in for number one this weekend. As for the dollar amount, that is anyone’s guess, so if you plan on making a guess in the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway, make it a good one!
I wouldn’t discount Central Intelligence though. I think the Rock and Kevin Hart are actors that could get people into the theater. So I think there is an outside chance that Central Intelligence could take the top spot!
