We had a pretty big opening for one movie this weekend–The Secret Life of Pets opened to a big $104 million dollar opening weekend. I thought it would be number one, and do well because of the wide audience appeal, but it exceeded my expectations! It also gave Tamara a significant boost in her Movie Draft standings!
Legend of Tarzan managed to edge out Finding Dory this weekend, by just under two hundred thousand dollars, with both making just about $21 million.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates only made about $16 million, but I don’t think anyone was expecting a miracle with that movie.
Here is a breakdown of the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- The Secret Life of Pets – $104,352,905
- The Legends of Tarzan – $21,006,462
- Finding Dory – $20,817,949
- Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates – $16,628,170
- The Purge: Election Year – $12,388,445
- Central Intelligence – $8,031,386
- The BFG – $7,809,384
- Independence Day: Resurgence – $7,779,531
- The Shallows – $4,804,345
- Sultan – $2,370,244
As for guessing this week, we had a bunch of correct guesses with the movie that would take number one! Austin Baroudi, Francine Anchondo, Matthew D., William Landefeld, and Daisy all correctly guessed Secret Life of Pets, for 3 bonus points towards our Summer Movie Draft Giveaway! Unfortunately, like I also thought, we all low-balled what the movie would make this weekend, so we weren’t able to award any additional bonus points this time. Don’t forget to make your guesses for this weekend though!
Looking To This Weekend
This week could be a tricky weekend. The only big movie coming out is Ghostbusters, which is based on the 80s movie, now with all female Ghostbusters rather than the all male cast as before. I have seen a lot of mixed feelings regarding the new iteration’s trailers, so I am not sure how well it will perform. I think I am going to stick with The Secret Life of Pets for number one, and my guess for dollar amount will be $55 million.
What do you think? Will Ghostbusters manage to take the number one spot? There is a lot of star power in the movie—Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Chris Hemsworth, so it is possible that Ghostbusters takes the top spot. On the other hand, The Secret Life of Pets has a wider audience and did well last weekend, and any animated film involving animals seems to do really well in theaters.
