It is time for the Week 17 update to the Summer Movie Draft. And well, I had a pretty good guess for the movie box office this weekend. I figured The Secret Life of Pets would beat out Ghostbusters, and my dollar amount was within $5 million of the actual box office, which would have earned me some bonus points! It is too bad I am not eligible to win my own competition!
Other than Ghostbusters coming in at number two, and a smaller movie, The Infiltrator, coming it at number 8, there was no movement in the top 10 movies. Everything stayed in the same position, but made 33% to 55% less than it did last week, depending on the movie.
Tamara had a bittersweet weekend, given Secret Life of Pets doing well and Ghostbusters underperforming. Meanwhile, Finding Dory is chugging along, bringing George within striking distance of Violet. David has been a little more silent as of lately, but he is still well within range if he has a few movies perform really well.
Here is a breakdown of the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- The Secret Life of Pets – $50,838,355
- Ghostbusters – $46,018,755
- The Legends of Tarzan – $11,441,337
- Finding Dory – $11,281,179
- Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates – $7,657,918
- The Purge: Election Year – $6,185,695
- Central Intelligence – $5,372,013
- The Infiltrator – $5,303,775
- The BFG – $3,789,434
- Independence Day: Resurgence – $3,521,282
Most people seemed to have the same state of mind I did when predicting this weekend’s movies, picking The Secret Life of Pets as the number one movie. Austin Baroudi, Tim, Matthew D., Francine Anchondo, and Daisy all guessed The Secret Life of Pets for 3 bonus entries to our giveaway! Francine Anchondo made the same guess as I had at $55 million, so she manages to also snag the additional 5 bonus entries!
Looking To This Weekend
It is now time to look at the box office for the upcoming weekend for the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway, so you can get your guesses in! This could be an interesting weekend. We have Ice Age: Collision Course, which will appeal to kids, Star Trek: Beyond, which will appeal to the nerds and Summer blockbuster movie-goers, and Lights Out, which will appeal to horror fans.
I think this week is a toss up between Star Trek: Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course, as they appeal to different audiences. I hate to underestimate the child crowd, but I think that Ice Age might be a little played out as a movie franchise, so I will put my bets on Star Trek: Beyond opening to $75 million. It could go either way, so I certainly am nervous about the decision!
So what do you think? Make your guesses for this week’s movie draft in the comments below. Don’t forget to estimate the box office for a shot at the extra bonus points! Also, learn more about what exactly the Summer Movie Draft is here!
