Over the weekend, Suicide Squad had a big weekend as expected. The marketing for the film really paid off in terms of box office numbers, as it brought in over $133 million. Unfortunately, it has universally been panned by critics, so we will have to see how that will play out in the box office. Suicide Squad should secure second place for David, and if Suicide Squad has a truly epic run, there is an outside chance of him taking number one. It would take a big haul for that to happen though. As a side note, Suicide Squad is now the biggest film for opening weekend in August, beating out Guardians of the Galaxy.
As for the other new release, Nine Lives, that unfortunately did not do very well at all, making under $7 million at the box office. It was not quite the haul that George would have hoped for. Jason Bourne continued to make money, about $22 million, although it had a pretty substantial drop off, at about 62%.
Congratulations to all of the correct guessers of Suicide Squad being the #1 movie. This earned William Landefeld, Matthew D., Rob Hestar, Daniel, Tim, Daisy, and Romeo an additional 3 entries towards the giveaway! Francine Anchondo and Austin Baroudi had very close predictions, earning 8 additional entries!

Looking to This Weekend
It looks like we might have one extra weekend for the Summer Movie Draft, with Ben-Hur being moved to the 19th at one point or another. That leaves Pete’s Dragon, the remake by Disney about a boy who finds a dragon, and Sausage Party, the animated film by Seth Rogen where our food tries to escape the carnage of human appetite.
Barring an amazing run by either movie, I think that Violet has clinched the victory. But we will have to wait and see! But don’t forget to get your guesses in this week as to which film will take number one! Simply leave your comments below to enter the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway! My guess is that Suicide Squad will hang in there at number one, but have a big drop off, making $50 million over the weekend. Let me know your guesses below!
