In the Ninth week of the Fantasy Movie Draft, there was a pretty exciting battle for the top box office spot over the weekend! I thought that Captain America: Civil War would hang onto the number one spot for another weekend, but it had right around a 55% drop off from last week, allowing Angry Birds to swoop in for the 1st place spot. I thought the numbers for both movies were a bit low, with The Angry Birds Movie coming in at about $38 million and Captain America: Civil War coming in at just under $33 million. Not bad hauls still, so both George and Violet should be pretty happy with the haul.
Neighbors 2 came in at around $21.7 million, which is pretty good for a comedy sequel. Again, I thought that this might make a little more than that, but if the movie gets good word of mouth, it could make some decent money over the long haul, so I guess Michelle will wait and see.
The Jungle Book looks to be barely beaten out by The Nice Guys, with both of those bringing in about $11 million. Money Monster is another decent haul at $7 million.
After that we have a pretty steep drop off. Here are the top 10 movies for last weekend domestically:
- The Angry Birds Movie – $38,155,177
- Captain America: Civil War – $32,939,739
- Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $21,760,405
- The Nice Guys – $11,203,270
- The Jungle Book – $10,944,350
- Money Monster – $7,016,884
- The Darkness – $2,272,618
- Zootopia – $1,683,982
- The Huntsman: Winter’s War – $1,209,045
- Mother’s Day – $1,139,283
As for the Summer Movie Draft Giveaway, we had a few correct guesses! Tim, William Landefeld, Francine Anchondo, Matthew D, and D. Rivera all managed to guess The Angry Birds Movie for the correct number one movie! Unfortunately, no one was able to guess within $5 million though, as I think most people expected this movie to do a little better.
I mention this every week, but if you are curious what the Summer Movie Draft is, read about it here! It is a fun way to get yourself interested in movies, and predicting how the box office will do week to week!
Also, make sure to get your guesses in for the number one domestic movie for this coming weekend! It will earn you entries towards the Summer Movie Draft giveaway we are hosting!
More Movies to Be Excited About Coming This Weekend!
So, this weekend has a couple more big movies coming out! One of my movies, X-Men: Apocalypse, releases, and I am hoping for some big numbers! Overseas it seems to be doing well, but I am a little worried about superhero fatigue, as Captain America: Civil War seems to have dropped off pretty quickly, as did Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (the latter could be because it was a terrible movie though; read our reviews for Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).
As for the second movie, it is Alice Through the Looking Glass, a sequel to the 2010 Alice in Wonderland, which made $334 million. I was personally not a fan of the movie, but a lot of people were, so Jamie is hoping for a big return on this movie in the competition.
I am curious to see how this week shakes out though. Number 1 and 2 are likely fought between X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass but I am still debating who wins out. Then 3rd, 4th and 5th place could be Captain America: Civil War, Neighbors 2, or The Angry Birds Movie in any order! But get your guesses in for the Giveaway, and prove you know what you’re talking about when it comes to weekend box office predictions!

Things are really heating up for the summer, and we will have to see if anyone has the ability to catch Violet’s monster box office she has going so far! Also, enter our X-Men: Apocalypse Giveaway, to celebrate the arrival of our favorite ancient mutant!
X-Men: Apocalypse with $120 million
X-men apocalypse…I was going to go with $120 million, but its taken, so I’ll go $115 million.
Alice Through The Looking Glass with $130 million.
X-Men: Age of Apocalypse 110 million
Xmen. 135 mil
X-men apocalypse takes it this week. 100 million
I think the money will be split, but negative reviews for X-men will drive more people to see Alice Through the Looking Glass at $50 million.
