At Stagg Industries, a man somehow teleports two security guards into a glass chamber and fills it with water, drowning them.
The next day, Barry and Iris meet up with Joe and Cecile at Jitters and tell them about Barry’s proposal. Cecile invites them to see Hamilton in July, which puts a damper on Iris and Barry’s moods, since they know that Iris is supposed to die in May. But Barry assures Cecile that they’ll be there.
Later at STAR Labs, Cisco takes a look at the future and sees that it has not changed. Joe, Barry, and Julian get a notification about a crime scene and head out to Stagg Industries. But before they leave, Caitlin tells Julian that an envelope came for him from the Central City Opera, and he says he had gotten it for the two of them awhile back, but to take whoever she likes. Cisco overhears, and Caitlin explains that Julian still doesn’t trust her after she lied about taking a piece of the Philosopher’s Stone.
Over at Stagg Industries, they try to figure out how the security guards got trapped in the container with water. Cisco interrupts Barry to tell him there’s a robbery in progress at Cord Industries, so The Flash runs over to check it out.
The Flash confronts the mysterious man that had broken into Stagg Industries. It turns out that this man knows who Barry is, because he’s from the future. He also knows about Iris and Savitar. Gypsy shows up to try to bring this guy in, but he throws a deck of cards at them and disappears.
Back at STAR Labs, Gypsy explains to the others that this man calls himself Abra Kadabra, and that they think he has nano technology built into his body. She also tells them that he is from the 64th century. A couple of weeks ago, he showed up on her Earth and looted some tech companies before coming here to do the same. Barry thinks that this guy could be the key to saving Iris from Savitar.
Cisco tries to vibe Abra Kadabra’s location, but it doesn’t work. Instead, he performs a search on the computer for anyone who vibrates at a different frequency than Earth-1 residents. Gypsy says she needs that technology, as well as other technologies at STAR Labs, so Cisco says he can help her out with that. He also tries to get close and kiss her, but she pulls away. Just then, there’s a notification from Cisco’s search — Kadabra has been located at Mercury Labs.
Cisco, Gypsy, Kid Flash, and the Flash head over to Mercury Labs to confront Kadabra. But it turns out it’s just a hologram.
Meanwhile, Kadabra shows up at STAR Labs and attacks Julian, Joe, and Caitlin. Barry makes it back and saves them, putting Kadabra into handcuffs. However, Kadabra says that if he lets him go, he knows the key to stopping Savitar — he knows who Savitar is. Gypsy comes in and tells Barry to hand him over. Barry opts to punch Kadabra in the face, knocking him out, then locks him up in a cell in the Pipeline.
Gypsy says she’s taking Kadabra back to her Earth after Barry’s done talking to him. Kadabra says that Savitar was the first speedster, and that Barry defeats him, but not until after Savitar takes Iris from him. He says if they let him out, he’ll tell them who Savitar is, whereas if they give him to Gypsy, then Iris will die.
Cisco confronts Iris as to why she’s so intent on bringing Kadabra back with her. He thinks that Kadabra must have taken someone from her, but she isn’t talking.
Caitlin bandages Julian up, who was injured in Kadabra’s attack. She apologizes for hurting him and asks for his forgiveness. He doesn’t respond.
At Joe’s house, Barry and Iris argue over what they should do about Kadabra. Iris is confident that Barry can save her without Kadabra’s help, and doesn’t want to let him free just to save her own life.
Joe secretly goes to see Kadabra in the Pipeline, and says if he tells him who Savitar is, he’ll let him go. Kadabra says to open the door first, and Joe agrees, with a gun pointed at him, and says he’ll blast him if he takes a step before telling him who Savitar is. Cisco and Gypsy get a security notification about the door opening, and Gypsy heads down to stop Joe, showing up just before Kadabra gives Joe the name. Upon seeing Gypsy, Kadabra disappears.
Kadabra finds what he was looking for — some sort of orb hidden in the wall in the secret time vault room. Joe catches up with him, saying they had a deal, and Kadabra says that he has altered the terms of their agreement. Kadabra throws a flash grenade and disappears. When the dust settles, we see that Caitlin has been pierced through the stomach with a pipe.
Everyone jumps into action, bringing her to the medical bay. Julian uses a handheld X-Ray and they see that she has shrapnel in her that could pierce her kidney. Cisco says that if Caitlin goes meta, then she’ll be able to heal herself, but she refuses. Instead, she convinces Julian, who was a field medic in the army, to do surgery on her while she looks in a mirror and directs him what to do.
Gypsy criticizes Joe for letting Kadabra out. Cisco overhears and Gypsy reveals that she used to have a partner who she cared for, and that Abra Kadabra killed him a few years ago, so she wants him to pay for what he did.
Julian takes out the surface shrapnel, then goes after a bigger, deeper piece and pulls it out. Iris also assists. Then Julian stitches her up so she can pass out. It seems that Caitlin will be okay.
Gypsy tells the others that she thinks she knows why Kadabra has been stealing all the tech — to build a time machine so he can get back to the future.
It looks like what Kadabra took from Wells’s time vault was a power source for his time machine. Gypsy wants to go after him alone, but Barry tries to talk her out of it, and instead to go after him all together. She reluctantly agrees, and they go after Kadabra as he flies his time machine through the city toward a temporal wormhole has he opened. Barry is able to run and knock Kadabra out of his machine as the machine goes through the wormhole without him. Gypsy promptly arrests Kadabra, as he taunts Barry about never knowing what he knows, and saying that Iris will die.
Back at STAR Labs, Barry confirms that Kadabra is going with Gypsy. He begs Kadabra to help him save Iris, but of course, Kadabra doesn’t want to help, saying that in the future they are enemies, and that this way, it’s like he gets to kill Iris too. When Gypsy asks, Cisco says he doesn’t know where this leaves the two of them. Gypsy goes through a breach with Kadabra back to Earth-19.
Julian sits at Caitlin’s bedside, holding her hand. She wakes up and he catches her up about Kadabra. He praises her for talking him through the surgery, then kisses her.
At Joe’s house, Iris and Joe talk about what happened with Kadabra. Iris says that he has been strong, which makes her stronger too. He is at a loss, not knowing what he can do to save her. Barry comes in just then and says he knows how to save her. He tells them that he is going to run to the future to find the answers they need.
Cisco brings Caitlin some jello, and laments about his broken heart over Gypsy. H.R. returns just then, saying he’s been away the past two days with a woman named Rhonda. Suddenly, Caitlin begins seizing, and stops breathing. Julian runs in to help. The oxygen and defibrillator aren’t working. Julian does manual CPR compressions, but that doesn’t help either. Not wanting her to die, Julian pulls off Caitlin’s necklace that prevents her from going meta. She begins showing signs of life, and her wound heals. But then she opens her eyes and emerges as Killer Frost, blasting ice at the others.
Her Thoughts on The Flash, Season 3 Episode 18: Abra Kadabra
As far as villains of the week go, this one was pretty annoying. But then again, aren’t they all? What’s more annoying is that Joe actually fell for Abra Kadabra’s ploy that he would tell him who Savitar is. Why would he even trust him? He’s a bad guy. There’s nothing saying that he would honor his deal with Joe. He just wanted out of that cell. Even though it appeared that Kadabra was just about to tell Joe who Savitar was when Gypsy burst into the room, I don’t think he was actually going to tell him. He was just going to pull another one of his tricks and go get the power source, like he ended up doing. I get that as a parent, Joe would want to do anything he could to save his daughter, but trusting Kadabra was stupid. It felt like Iris was the only sane one this episode, and she’s the one whose life is on the line. And who’s to say that knowing Savitar’s identity necessarily is the key? Just because Kadabra said so?
Also, it looks like one more headline is starting to come true, the one about Killer Frost. I still think it’s dumb that for Caitlin to be meta, that means she has this whole other identity which happens to be evil. But I won’t go on that rant again.
Anyway, it looks like Barry still hasn’t learned his lesson about going back, or in this case forward, in time, since he’s planning on running into the future. It seems like this would have repercussions in the same way Flashpoint did. But I guess we’ll see what happens.
