This episode of The Flash begins with Barry confronting Savitar, proclaiming to know who he is.
Flash back to 16 hours earlier, and Joe and Cecil have returned to Joe’s house after a morning run. Cecil lets the “L” word slip, but Joe is saved by the bell when he gets a call to head over to STAR Labs.
Barry tells everyone at STAR Labs about Tracy Brand, who is the key to stopping Savitar, because in the future she invents the tech that traps him in the Speed Force. Julian is upset about the lack of effort in looking for Caitlin, but Cisco makes it clear that they’re doing everything they can. We also learn that Wally is off visiting Jesse on Earth-3.
Cisco locates Tracy, who is currently a grad student at CCU, so he, Barry, and H.R. head over there to see her. When they find her, she is upset that she failed her dissertation. Killer Frost shows up and shoot an icicle at Tracy, but Barry saves her and H.R. takes her out of there. Cisco faces off with Killer Frost and gets blasted. Barry is able to shoot some fire at her, and she runs away. They realize that she and Savitar are working together.
Later, at CCPD, Tracy files a report about her attacker. Cecile pulls Joe aside to talk about what happened between them earlier, and Barry overhears. Joe and Barry are unable to convince Tracy to stay under protective custody.
Killer Frost reports the bad news to Savitar that Tracy got away. He accuses her of letting Tracy go on purpose. Then he reminds her that they could both be gods, she just has to kill Tracy.
H.R. finds Tracy at Jitters and tells her that his team is interested in her research. It turns out Cisco is feeding him scientific talk through an earpiece. Julian brings up the fact that he saw the footage from earlier that they had wiped — and he noticed that when Cisco and Killer Frost faced off, it looked like Cisco had a clear shot, but he didn’t take it. Cisco shrugs him off though.
Meanwhile, Joe and Barry are staking out Jitters. They talk about Cecile, and Barry encourages Joe to be honest with her.
Inside Jitters, Tracy and H.R. talk more about her research. Suddenly, Killer Frost shows up and tries shooting an icicle at Tracy again. Fortunately, the Flash is able to save her again. H.R. runs off with Tracy, and Killer Frost chases after by flying through the air on ice. The Flash tries to head her off though. Then he leads her right back to Cisco, who is supposed to uses his powers on her, but he hesitates, and Barry takes the brunt of Killer Frost’s attack. She then stabs Barry in the leg with an icicle.
Back at STAR Labs, the team answers Tracy’s questions and explain about Savitar. They also tell her that her theories were correct, and show her that she wins a Nobel Prize in the future. Barry asks her to build the trap now — or else someone they love will die. Tracy is overwhelmed and excuses herself. H.R. chases her down to talk.
Julian confronts Cisco about him failing to use his powers on Killer Frost yet again. Cisco admits that he’s afraid of killing her.
Barry asks Joe if he has told Cecile about the Flash team. Joe says he is hesitant to because she’s the only normal thing in his life. Just then, H.R. comes in and tells them they have a problem — Tracy’s gone.
The Flash Team tries to figure out where Tracy could be. By looking at her future hologram photos, they figure out she is at Galileo’s statue, so H.R. goes there to talk to her and instills confidence in her.
Cecile drops by Joe’s house to see him. He tells her that part of his life is very complicated, and if she become part of that, then it would change them forever. Joe goes on to tell her that he thinks they should stop seeing each other. Cecile leaves in tears, but then it turns out Killer Frost was waiting outside, and holds a knife to Cecile’s throat. She tells him that in an hour, he will get a message with an address, to which he is to bring Tracy Brand, or else she will kill Cecile.
Joe goes over to STAR Labs and tells them what’s going on. Barry says he has a plan.
Julian privately talks to Cisco and gives him some supporting words about stopping and saving Caitlin.
The Flash and Joe show up to the location with Tracy. Barry tries to talk Killer Frost down, but she already knows what Barry is going to say, and everything that is going to happen — because this is all history to Savitar. So she already knows that Cisco is in the rafters, and attacks him, bringing him down. Barry jumps in front of Tracy to save her again. Cisco gets up and goes after Killer Frost. They shoot their powers at each other, while Tracy, Cecile, and Joe get to safety. Eventually, Cisco is able to overpower Killer Frost, blowing her back and knocking her out. Using a syringe, he draws some of her blood. Suddenly, Savitar shows up and knocks Cisco away, then picks up Killer Frost and runs off.
Back at STAR Labs, Julian is hopeful that Killer Frost’s blood sample could lead to reverse engineering a cure. Additionally, Tracy talks to H.R., and seems to be on the right track to building a trap for Savitar.
Cecile goes to Joe’s office to talk to him. He apologizes for getting her caught up in all this, and that he was trying to protect her. Joe tells her that he’s done lying to her, and tells Cecile that he loves her.
When Joe returns home, Iris, Barry, and Wally are there. Joe tells them that he told Cecile everything. Suddenly, Barry has an epiphany, and heads out to confront Savitar — which leads us back to the beginning of the episode, with Barry saying that he knows who Savitar is. Barry knows that it’s himself. Savitar kneels down in his suit, and steps out of it. It is in fact Barry, but with half of his face covered in scar tissue. Savitar reminds Barry that he told him, “I am the future Flash.”
Her Thoughts on The Flash, Season 3 Episode 20: I Know Who You Are
Going back to episodes earlier in the season, Savitar has said “I am the future Flash” a couple of times. But the question was whether he was saying “I am the future, Flash” as in saying that he is the future, and addressing Barry as Flash, or whether he was saying that he himself is Flash in the future. Well, now we know that it was the latter. Because of this, it was always in the back of my mind that he could be a future version of Barry, but I dismissed that possibility for some reason, presuming instead that it was somebody else. Indeed, when Savitar revealed himself to Caitlin, and she bowed down to him, I had to then consider who would command such attention from her? I thought maybe Ronnie, as well haven’t seen him around in awhile, and he’s bound to pop up again at some point, right? But now it makes sense that it was a future version of Barry.
Now we have to wonder just what version of Barry is this? What exactly has he experienced? So far, he has the same experiences at the present Barry, but is that going to change soon? At this point, it seems like Barry going into the future to figure out who Savitar was would have changed things, but so far, Savitar still remembers everything as it happened at least up through this episode. Does that mean that this future version of Barry also brought Tracy Brand into the fold at this early stage? Or is that new? It’s one of those things that if you wonder about it too much, it makes your brain hurt. In any case, I hope we get an explanation on this. I am definitely interested to see how things play out from here with this new knowledge.
