Episode Recap of Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 10: 11:53 to Odessa
Picking up where we left off — 7,957 years in the future — Katana Girl wanders through the empty desert and seems to come upon some sort of civilization in the distance, and heads towards it.
After the events at the ice cream shop, Noah takes Malina with him. Luke gives Malina back her stuff, and Malina explains that Luke is the one that drove her here. Luke says she saved his life. Malina tells Noah that it was Luke’s wife that shot Casper. Luke says he wants to help find Tommy, and that Malina showed him his destiny, but Noah tells him to leave them alone.
Tommy wakes up in a bedroom at Erica’s house. There’s something in the back of his neck. Erica claims her staff ran some tests because he passed out and they weren’t sure what was wrong with him. He is unable to use his powers because Phoebe is nearby. Erica tries to put some doubts in Tommy’s head about his family. They go downstairs to talk some more, as Quentin and Phoebe stand guard. Tommy wonders why Erica doesn’t want him to fulfill the prophecy, but Erica points out that he’s talking about the reversal of the poles, and questions how to stop a celestial event, to which Tommy doesn’t have an answer. Erica tells him that she has a solution to start again: Hiro Nakamura created a time bridge to the future, and her company has been building a colony there. However, Noah severed the connection when he took Hiro from her facility. She tells Tommy that if he doesn’t re-open the bridge, then humans go extinct. Tommy demands that she show him.
In the future, Katana Girl wanders into Gateway, and men approach her, asking if Erica sent her, and what year she’s from. However, she attacks them and runs off.
Taylor approaches Sunstone Manor with the Haitian and a few of his group members. She comes up with a plan to break in. Meanwhile, inside, Matt Parkman visits Farah, who he is keeping locked away and tied up, and questions her about Malina’s whereabouts. However, he’s unable to get anything from her, so he tells her he has Carlos, and is going to bring him in.
While Noah and Malina drive to Midian, Colorado to get Tommy, Malina asks Noah about her mother. Noah also tells Malina about Erica’s plan.
Tommy brings Erica, Quentin, and Phoebe with him into the future. Erica says no one’s there yet because he hasn’t decided to save them, and claims that it’s proof that he and his sister failed to stop the apocalypse. She then shows him Gateway off in the distance, and says the choice is his to save mankind.
Ren is at the internet cafe, wondering where Miko is, when a samurai appears and then leaves the cafe.
Parkman brings a handcuffed Carlos into the room with Farah. We see a flashback of what happened when they were in the army together. Parkman seems to be getting closer to figuring about where Malina is, when he figures out that Carlos still hasn’t gotten over Farah, and that Farah is in love with Carlos. Parkman holds a gun to Carlos’s head and demands to know where Malina is.
Meanwhile, a shapeshifter transforms into Erica, and Taylor accompanies the fake Erica, as they enter Sunstone Manor without resistance.
Parkman threatens to shoot Carlos, and Farah says she’ll tell Parkman where Malina is. Just then, someone comes in and tells Parkman that Erica Kravid is there. He says he’ll be right there. But first, he demands for Farah to tell him everything about Malina.
At a gas station, Noah sees that Luke has been following them, so he confronts him. Luke admits how he came to meet Tommy, and apologizes. He continues to insist that he wants to help. He also says he was going to kill himself until Malina saved him, and that he is different now. Noah just takes Malina back to the car and they leave.
In the future, Katana Girl sneaks into Gateway. She comes across a room with unconscious people who are restrained. Hachiro Otomo walks in, and confirms that one of the people is her, Miko. Otomo also tells her that he sent Ren to her. He tells her that she must find the Master of Time and Space, and that he is here. Otomo apologizes, then yells that an intruder is there. She runs off.
Tommy, Erica, Phoebe, and Quentin walk onto the Gateway grounds. Erica tells Tommy that this is the first of many, all of which he is going to fill. While Erica talks to Tommy, Quentin is surprised by Phoebe’s attitude, and questions her if she’s okay with everything going on here. She says that this is who she is.
Back in the present, Ren continues to follow the samurai.
Parkman meets with Taylor and fake Erica. He’s fooled at first, but soon figures out it’s not really Erica. Taylor tazes him, then goes to find Micah, while the shapeshifter tries to see what he can find out.
Ren enters a building where people are training Kenjutsu. Hachiro Otomo greets him, and tells him that Miko is dying and that Ren is her only hope. Otomo tells Ren to find a time traveler to get to the future, and gives him a key, which he’ll need when he goes to Gateway in Odessa, Texas. He tells him about the time bridge and that he needs to find a way to be sent with the others. Then Otomo leaves, and suddenly all the people training disappear as well.
In the future, Erica gives Tommy a tour of the Gateway grounds. Tommy seems impressed, then asks about the scar on his neck. She admits she tried to steal his powers, but it didn’t work. Tommy says he’ll help, but tells her not to lie to him. He says he wants as many people as he can take here. But Erica says first they need more supplies. A man tells Erica about Katana Girl’s attack. She tells him to hunt her down and kill her, then bring her Otomo.
Harris enters Parkman’s office, and sees two Parkmans. He shoots one. It turns out it was the shapeshifter. Lucky guess. Parkman reports where Malina is headed. Harris says they’re already taking care of Taylor.
Meanwhile, Carlos beats up his guard, then goes and rescues Farah from the doctor’s office. She isn’t waking up, so he slaps her, then kisses her. She wakes up. He gives her a gun.
Noah and Malina are stopped in traffic due to a big storm up ahead. They get out of the car, and Malina uses her powers to try to stop the storm.
In Sunstone Manor, Farah and Carlos come across Taylor, who tells them she is with Hero Truther and is looking for Micah Sanders. Meanwhile, we see Parkman enter a room where Micah is being held. He’s in a small cell surrounded by four clear walls, with an electrical cord coming out of the back of his neck. Parkman tells Micah to find Erica’s list of people going to the future. Micah quickly finds it, and Parkman sees that he is on the list, along with his wife and son.
Ren gets on a bus to go to Odessa.
Tommy sends some people back to the present, including Quentin and Phoebe. Erica opts to stay behind for now, and tells Tommy he can bring the others soon. Just then, Katana Girl jumps down from where she was hiding above, addresses Tommy as the Master of Time and Space, and tells him it is her mission to free him. Then they disappear.
Malina continues to fight the storm as it gets closer. A car flies and is about to crush Noah, when an arm touches him, and they teleport away. Malina finally succeeds in making the storm go away. Instead of being thankful, people get angry at her because she is an Evo, and accuse her of causing this to happen. Luke uses his fire power to keep the people away. Luke tells Malina that Noah was somewhere near an overturned car. She searches there, but finds only his glasses. Luke tells Malina they have to go now, so they run and get in the car.
At Sunstone, Taylor, Farah, and Carlos demand that a worker open the gates, and ask where everyone is. He replies that the last transport for Odessa just left. They run outside and meet up with the Haitian and a few others. They see a legion of Harrises approaching them. They run.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 10 of Heroes Reborn: 11:53 to Odessa
When it got to the end of this episode, I was surprised to find out that we would have to wait until January to see the final three episodes. I feel like the show was struggling to gain steam in the beginning and lost a lot of viewers, so it seems counterintuitive to delay the final 3 episodes almost 2 months, airing them starting January 7, while some people are still out on Winter Break. The viewers that the show has left may not even care by then, and may have kind of forgotten about it. That is a shame, because the show finally did start getting good these last few episodes.
Anyway, so this episode had some pretty cool aspects to it. You know me, I’m a sucker for time travel. And we finally got to see what Renautas has been up to all this time with their machine. Erica seems to have Tommy convinced to come to her side of things, as some things she said actually did make sense. But as we can see, but Tommy cannot, she is still a bad person, who doesn’t really intend to bring the entire human population to the future — she only has a specific list of people. But on the other hand, maybe Tommy isn’t as fooled as he seems. Maybe he’s just playing Erica.
One thing I liked about this episode was that we got to see Quentin drop his guard a bit, and see a hint of that Quentin that we knew before the timeline changed. He’s not quite as evil as he has seemed to be, and in fact is still questioning what’s he’s doing. Phoebe, however, appears to have entirely bought into what Erica’s been telling her, unfortunately.
Although we were previously led to believe that Hiro died (which, even if he did, I never believed he would actually stay dead), I’m pretty sure that was Hiro who saved Noah there at the end. I suppose it could have been Tommy, but I don’t think we’re done with Hiro yet. Or I hope not, at least.
At this point, the wait is almost over to see the three episodes that conclude Heroes Reborn. Here’s hoping that it has an intriguing, dramatic conclusion that proves it was worth the wait!
