Episode Recap of Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 12: Company Woman
The first solar flare heads towards Earth, and the world learns about it, and begins to prepare. Matt drives with Taylor toward Odessa, as Carlos also drives there with Farah, Micah, and Jose.
Meanwhile, at Renautas, Tommy goes to see Erica, and she guesses that he saw the broadcast. Despite showing hostility toward her, Tommy straps into the machine and sends the first group to Gateway in the future. The group members are wearing the special watches, and the mass transfer is successful.
Outside, Ren disembarks from the bus, and arrives at Renautas, where security officers are scanning people’s hands. They ask his name, look him up, and allow him to pass, telling him to register to get his watch.
Luke, Malina, Quentin, and Phoebe are also driving toward Odessa. They come across a checkpoint, and turn around and go the other way. They try to figure out how to get Tommy’s attention.
As Erica gets off the phone with the Governor, Matt brings Taylor in at gunpoint. He uses his power to have Taylor point the gun at her own head. Matt demands three watches from Erica for him and his family. She protests at first, but when Matt spills the beans that Taylor is pregnant, Erica hands the watches over, and he leaves.
Luke drives to the outskirts of the old Primatech factory.
Tommy overhears Erica’s scientists talking, and realizes only a select few were planned to be saved. Angry at being tricked, he teleports himself away.
We see a flashback of Erica as a young woman. A doctor has paid her father a house visit, and tells Erica there’s nothing else he can do for her father, medically speaking. However, he’s an Evo, and can heal him. Erica agrees, though it turns out he wants sex as payment.
One of Erica’s men reports that Tommy is gone. She tells him to find Tommy’s mother, and they’ll find Tommy. When Erica goes to leave, Taylor gets angry that Erica is leaving her behind, and glass shatters. They realize that Taylor’s baby is an Evo. Taylor demands to see Francis, and pulls a gun on Erica.
Luke, Phoebe, and Quentin walk through the woods, while Malina waits in the car. Phoebe runs off, and Luke looks like he’s going to shoot her, so Quentin knocks him over. Phoebe frees her hands and takes the shunt out of her nose, allowing her to use her powers again. Quentin pulls Luke’s gun on him, just long enough to let Phoebe get away, then hands the gun over to Luke. It appears that Quentin wants to join Luke’s side now, and has accepted the fact that the person Phoebe has become is not his sister.
Ren proceeds to registration, and sits down to wait for his name to be called. He happens to sit next to Emily, who is also waiting. Emily’s name is called, and she receives her watch. She and Ren talk, and she learns that Ren is looking for the Master of Time and Space – at which she reveals she is dating him. They leave to go find Tommy.
Meanwhile, Tommy freezes time to retrieve his mother, who the Renautas security officers have apprehended. He brings his mother into the future to see Gateway. She reminds him that this isn’t only timeline, and there are many possible futures, according to his father, Hiro. Tommy’s mom encourages him and praises his abilities, telling him that when the time comes, he’ll know what to do. Tommy brings his mother back to the present, to the place where he and Malina are supposed to meet. Then he teleports himself to the last place that he saw Malina.
As Taylor marches her mother to see Francis, Erica tells Taylor that everything she’s done has been for her. However, Taylor thinks her mother is just a monster.
Back to Erica’s flashback, it turns out that the Evo doctor got Erica pregnant, but that she doesn’t want to tell him. Her father, who is well, tells her he’ll support whatever decision she makes.
Renautas security guards surround Taylor and pull guns on her. Taylor figures out that Francis has been dead this whole time.
In another flashback, Erica calls upon the Evo doctor to cure her young daughter (Taylor), who is coughing up blood. He heals her. But then he realizes that she is his daughter, and says Taylor will live with him, that Erica doesn’t have a choice. Erica grabs a pair of scissors and stabs him in the back of the head.
In the present, Erica sends her guards away. She tells Taylor that she is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to her. Taylor drops the gun to her side, and asks what happens now. Erica says they start again. However, Taylor says this future is only possible if billions of people die. Erica says she’s made her choices, and it’s time for Taylor to make hers. Erica asks Taylor and her grandchild to come with her, and start over. However, Taylor says she’d rather die than go on living in an empty world with her. Then Taylor goes into the elevator, leaving Erica alone in the hallway, and Erica breaks down crying.
Luke, Quentin, and Malina arrive at Union Wells High School, where Claire Bennett went to school. While there, Malina sees a picture of her mother. They go into the gym, where people have been evacuated. Luke says the best way to get Tommy’s attention is with the news crew that’s there, and suggests that she stand in front of a recognizable sign so that Tommy knows where she is. Malina removes her hood, and beings using her powers to move objects around in the air and light them on fire.
Meanwhile, Farah and Micah enter a convenient store, which has been abandoned. There’s a TV on, and they see Malina’s message to Tommy. Micah uses his powers to send the transmission on a loop to anything that receives a signal.
Right around that time, Tommy returns to his mother, who receives Malina’s message on her phone. Tommy teleports himself to Union Wells High School.
At Renautas, Richard gives Erica a status update, telling her that Otomo has patched up his prison in Evernow, and showing her Malina’s message. He tells her that he has sent both her new hitwoman (Joanne) and Otomo to Union Wells.
We see Joanne arrive at Union Wells, and Tommy shortly thereafter. However, before Tommy can find Malina, Otomo finds him, and makes him disappear. Joanne soon finds Malina, and fires shots at her. Quentin dives to knock her over, saving her. Just then, Carlos and the others arrive at Union Wells. Luke tries to talk Joanne down, but she fires more shots anyway. Luke immediately reacts, using his power to scorch Joanne to ashes. It turns out that Farah, who had turned invisible, jumped in front of Malina, taking the shots. Carlos scoops up Farah, then he, Micah, and Jose head to take her to a hospital.
Back at Renautas, as Ren and Emily wander around looking for Tommy, Ren sees an area that he recognizes from Evernow. They get in the elevator, intending to head down to the Core, where they believe they will find Tommy. The button doesn’t work, but Ren realizes the necklace he is wearing is a key, which he inserts, and they are able to activate the elevator button.
Matt Parkman calls his wife, Janice, while driving to her and his son with their watches. However, he gets in a car accident along the way, his car rolling down to a river embankment. The watch he is wearing has broken in the accident, and the two other watches float down the river. Matt calls aloud for help, then laughs maniacally, as there is no help to be found.
At Renautas, Otomo demands that Erica honor her side of their arrangement. She says she will as soon as the transfer is complete and they’re back online. Otomo comments that he has done terrible things to keep his daughter alive, to which Erica tells him not to be ashamed for the scars they bear for their children.
This prompts another flashback, as little Taylor gazes upon the man that her mother just killed. There’s a knock on the door – it’s a younger Caspar, who gives her his Primatech card. He sees what has happened, commenting that she has helped them, and offers to make her forget. Young Erica says she doesn’t want to forget, but that she needs him to help her daughter.
Ren and Emily sneak down to the area where Erica and Otomo are. They overhear that Otomo has imprisoned the Master of Time and Space, and they just need to put him online. Richard sneaks up behind Otomo and jabs him in the neck with a syringe, causing him to immediately pass out. A couple of guards wheel Otomo away on a gurney, as Richard takes over at the computer. We see into the network that Tommy is trapped in a small room in Evernow, and is guarded by several samurai, as he hopelessly calls out for help.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 12 of Heroes Reborn: Company Woman
It feels a little odd that now that we are almost at the end of this, they seem to be trying to humanize Erica. I definitely did not expect to see such insight into her background, and while I did find it interesting, at this point it seems like too little, too late in trying to get any sympathy towards Erica out of me. It does explain why she has a vendetta against Evos though, considering that one used his powers against her. But that doesn’t excuse her attitude of lumping them all into the same category, assuming that all are evil, and just wanting to kill them off after she got what she wanted out of them. Were we supposed to assume that Erica was telling Taylor this story as we were watching it? Or is Taylor still in the dark about it? Either way, I can certainly understand and support Taylor’s reaction toward her mother.
I was also finding a hard time buying into how the end of the episode played out with everyone meeting up at Union Wells High School. The timing just didn’t seem right to have both Joanne and Otomo beat Tommy there, considering that Tommy can just teleport there. Additionally, why did Tommy arrive out in the hallway with the lockers? When he saw the broadcast, Malina was in the gym, with the sign in the background. You’d think he would have teleported to that area, found Malina and the others, and teleported them away before anything could happen to him. Anyway, I felt like things progressed awkwardly there at the end, and it was kind of a shock that Luke would roast his wife.
Well, only one more episode left of the series, since it’s not getting renewed. Still a lot of questions left to answer, like what happened to Noah and Hiro, and how are they going to fend off the impending apocalypse? Hopefully everything comes together in an exciting and coherent way!
