Episode Recap of Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 3: Under the Mask
The episode begins with a blond girl named Malina hiking across snow and some sort of event occurring with lights in the sky, as we see the outline of an invisible person advising her.
Noah and Quentin
Noah steals a truck and takes Quentin to the hospital. While Quentin gets his wound tended to, a doctor named Dr. Moore approaches Noah, and is surprised to see him. Dr. Moore says that the last time he saw him was June 13, a year ago. He steps aside and secretly calls security, but when he turns back around, Noah is gone.
Noah puts a gun to a security guard and has him show him security footage from a year ago, since he doesn’t remember what happened. He sees himself in the morgue, and it keeps skipping around, like some sort of time jump is going on. When he pulls back the sheet in the video, he sees that it’s Claire. He also sees himself walking down the hall with Molly Walker. Just then, Quentin finds Noah and tells them they need to leave.
They get in the truck and drive off. Noah tells Quentin what he saw, and they wonder how it’s possible that she died. Noah wonders why he would want to erase his memory. He realizes that only Molly can help them.
Luke and Joanne
Meanwhile, Luke and Joanne are driving somewhere in Texas, in Noah’s car, and look at the Evo files they acquired. Joanne wants to decide who to go after. Luke reaches to change the radio station, and we see a spark. Suddenly, the car breaks down. They get out and walk.
They end up at a diner, and Luke says he thinks they should go West to LA to see the ocean. She agrees, since he and their son always loved the water. As Luke cuts into his steak, the knife heats up, turning red, cooking the steak even more. Joanne doesn’t notice this happening, and calls the waitress over, saying that he ordered rare.
They go to a motel, and while Joanne is in the room, Luke becomes brighter and brighter until he appears to burst into light.
Tokyo
In Tokyo, Miko, aka Katana Girl, appears out of nowhere in the middle of the lobby at Yamagato Tower. The security guards try to take her down, but she fights them all off. Then Harris shows up and is able to knock her down and take her sword away.
Elsewhere in the building, Renautas CEO Erica Kravid is finishing up a meeting talking about the launch of some sort of advanced eyewear called “Epic,” when Harris comes in and reports what has happened in the lobby. It seems that the sword is Hiro Nakamura’s sword. Erica is also perplexed as to how she could be the daughter of Hachiro Otomo, as she claims to be.
Ren enters the lobby, nonchalantly taking a photo, and eavesdropping while Erica and Harris walk by. Ren “accidentally” bumps into a woman passing by, stealing her ID badge, and using it to gain access to the elevators.
Harris questions Miko, while Ren sneaks up to the room where she is being held. Harris asks Miko whether she has her father’s powers, or if she’s just his best work. She also doesn’t seem to remember her father’s death. Harris takes a large knife and says he’ll help restore her memory, which causes her to start screaming. Just then, Ren bursts into the room, distracting Harris for a moment, which allows Miko to take the knife and slice Harris’s hand off. Ren and Miko run away. However, Harris’s hand grows back, and the hand that got sliced off grows into a Harris clone.
Ren shows Miko the photos he took, and they decide to go to America.
EPIC
Taylor brings Molly Walker to an airfield in New Jersey and they get on a small plane.
Molly is brought inside as Erica and Harris prepare for the Epic launch party at Renautas, and Noah and Quentin sneak inside. As Molly is taken down a hallway, Noah and Quentin are able to overtake the guards, and tell Molly to come with them, but she refuses, and runs the other way — right into Harris.
Molly is strapped to a chair. Meanwhile, Erica speaks to Harris, who is traveling by helicopter at the Arctic Circle. Taylor comes in, and it turns out Erica is her mother. Taylor asks about her boyfriend, Francis, who was not allowed on the plane. Erica says they’ll discuss it tomorrow.
Erica starts the EPIC presentation. EPIC is using Molly to power itself, and can locate any Evo. While she gives the presentation, we see Harris and his team in the Arctic Circle put on Epic glasses. Malina and her friend see the helicopter. Erica puts on her EPIC glasses and locates an Evo in the room, then directs security to escort him out. Noah and Quentin hide while watching the presentation, and Noah says they have to get to Molly Walker and free her.
East Los Angeles
In East Los Angeles, Carlos Gutierrez closes up the garage, as his little brother Jose stops by. Carlos promises that things will get better. Carlos then follows a man to a warehouse where a woman is tied to a chair. The man tries to get the woman to tell her about the Underground Railroad, but she refuses. He beats her, then throws her out the window. However, she is an Evo, and is able to suspend herself midair, then flies off. The man says that he tagged her and that she’ll lead them to the others. They hear Carlos make a noise, and try to chase him down. They almost find him, when the priest uses his powers to save him.
Carlos shows up at a warehouse dressed as El Vengador. It seems that he followed the people from earlier, who tracked the woman there, where she is meeting with a few other people. He tells them to go out the back and get to Father Mauricio. The men enter the room and find nothing but a laptop. El Vengador tells the man he just missed them, and starts to beat him. But it turns out the other man has powers – he is very strong. The man then starts to beat El Vengador, who jumps out the window and runs away, nearly getting run over by a car.
Illinois
In Illinois, Tommy’s mom won’t let him go to his friend’s party. He lets it slip that someone’s been texting him, which angers her even more, and she forbids him from leaving. But he uses his powers to teleport past her. He leaves and goes to the party, where he has a good time. He and Emily talk outside, and he starts to walk her home. Tommy’s mom finds Casper sitting outside the party in his car, and she holds her gun to him. She asks if he is “the protector,” and he says that he won’t break his promise to keep an eye on Tommy and “follow the plan.” He says that the world will need Tommy soon, and tells her “you need our help.” Tommy sees his mom just then, and asks who she’s talking to. She demands for him to get in the car, and he complies. As they drive away, they get into a car accident.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 3 of Heroes Reborn: Under the Mask
I can see that things are starting to come together now on Heroes Reborn. It seems like Renautas has the goal of tracking down all the Evos and digitizing their powers. Which is why they had to get Molly first, so they could easily find all the Evos. However, I wasn’t all that enthralled by this episode. Mainly because it mostly did not include my favorite storyline, which is that of Tommy, except until almost the very end. It seemed like his mom might have known more than she was letting on about his destiny, and that she wants no part of it, which is why she wanted to get out of town right away. But it also seemed like someone else did not want that to happen, which resulted in the car accident. We know Tommy will make it through, but what about his mom? It’s possible she could die. Was it someone’s goal
to get her out of the way so as to allow whoever wants Tommy to be able to get to him without her interference? What is Casper’s role in all this? How will Tommy help the world? These questions make me want to see what happens next with this storyline.
I still haven’t really been able to get into the other storylines very much. Though it does appear that Luke is becoming an Evo. Or was he an Evo all along and has just been hiding it? He seems confused, so I’m going to guess that this is just now happening to him. Wonder how that’s going to go over with the wife…
I guess there are implications about Miko, that she’s not really the daughter, but could instead be her father’s “best work.” What does that mean? Was her father a video game designer and she really just started out as a video game character but he somehow brought her to life? She is missing her memory of what happened to him, but that could also be courtesy of the Haitian, like Noah’s memory loss.
Speaking of Noah, I too am skeptical about how Claire died. Her power is self-healing, so she can’t die. Yes, she has died before, when she got something lodged into a certain part of her brain, but she was just fine once it was removed. I suppose her power could have been taken from her, like Adam Monroe, who was also a self-healer, leaving her vulnerable. Or another Evo had some sort of power that cancelled hers out. Unfortunately, Noah was unable to stick around long enough to find out the cause of her death.
At this point, I suppose there’s enough going on in Heroes Reborn to interest me to keep watching, even though I don’t feel that attached to all these new characters yet, other than Tommy. But honestly, I’m kind of more interested in the seeing more old characters make their return. Hope that happens soon!
Josh’s Thoughts: Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 3: Under the Mask
So far, my interest in Heroes Reborn hasn’t been really caught yet. There are some interesting things, like Noah seeing Claire dead in the hospital and not knowing why. There is also this mysterious cloning man. What is up with him? Where does he keep the rest of the clones that he likely has? Also, why does this girl have Hiro’s sword? When will we be seeing Hiro again anyway? Comic-Con made it seem like we would be seeing these characters significantly in the show, and for the first three episodes we have any seen a few, and the only one with prominence is Noah.
One thing that is bothering me about Heroes Reborn is Joanne and Luke’s story. How do they just up and decide to be killers? I know I mentioned it last week, but it is still bothering me. What is even more bothersome is that Luke seems to now be feeling a little remorse/guilt about it. For me, this makes his character even more difficult to believe. I would think that for someone to go off on this much of a killing spree, the person would have to be deranged to the point of being a sociopath. They would lack empathy, which is why they kill without remorse. To add remorse doesn’t make a lot of since to me. But I guess if I look at it from another perspective–such as racially–it might make sense. Perhaps Nazis in the late 30s/early 40s considered Jewish people less-than human, but maybe there are a few people who began to see that they were wrong, and those people are what Luke is analogous to….
As for Carlos, so far he is powerless. I am curious if he is going to be the guy who is powerless, helping the powered. It sure sucks for him when he runs into a powered person that is trying to stop the “Underground Railroad” that Carlos is trying to protect.
I am curious about this EPIC device, in that, is this device government sanctioned? Why is this company so proud of their device they feel the need to announce it to the world? I would think it would be something that would want to keep secret, so the Evos can’t catch on to why they are being caught so easily. It just seems odd to make a big event out of announcing the machine. Especially when it involves basically torturing someone to run it.
But finally, Tommy and his mom look to be in some trouble. I am going to guess this traffic collision was no accident. I guess we’ll see who this was net episode.
