Episode Recap of Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 5: The Lion’s Den
Renautas
Picking up where we left off at the end of last episode, Noah, Taylor, and Quentin run and hide within Renautas.
Meanwhile, Erica is aware of the Evernow cosplayers outside of Renautas. Harris reports that Ren set this up. Erica realizes that it’s a Trojan horse to get Miko past security to get the sword. She tells Harris to send one of himself to get Ren and Miko, and to take care of Molly Walker’s body. It seems that although Molly’s ability didn’t fully download, EPIC can still identify Evos that are nearby.
A Harris clone goes down to the Renautas gate and lets the Evernow fans inside. Ren and Miko try to blend in.
Noah, Taylor, and Quentin wander into a room and find a large seed bank, the kind you build when you’re planning to repopulate after an extinction. They hide when they hear people coming in, who load up some containers for transport.
As the Harris clone looks around with his EPIC glasses, Mika and Ren realize this might be a trap. Regardless, Miko still wants to go after the sword.
Erica goes to the warehouse where the containers have been brought. She and her friend Richard test out some sort of device. Just then, Taylor calls her mother and asks to talk face to face at their house. Erica says she’ll meet her there. Little does she know that Noah and Quentin are there too.
Miko avoids being spotted by Harris as she enters the building with the Evernow fans, and she and Ren split off from the group. They spy on Harris, who is driving away with Molly’s body. However, Ren is able to run up and put his phone behind the license plate so that he can use the GPS to track Harris.
Erica meets up with Taylor at home, and Taylor confronts her mother about what she did to her boyfriend, Francis. She also asks her mother what she’s up to. However, Erica accuses Taylor of using drugs. Just then, Noah and Quentin enter the room. Quentin asks where his sister is, but Erica says she has no idea what he’s talking about. Noah brings Erica into the other room to talk, and asks if she killed Claire. Erica says she had nothing to do with it, and says that Hiro died at the Summit. Erica accuses Noah of going soft, and seems to believe that she is giving humanity a future, though isn’t forthcoming with the details. Noah demands answers, but Harris arrives just then, holding a gun to Noah’s head. He hands over the sword to Erica. A Harris clone brings in the other two.
Miko bursts through the glass wall and takes the sword, then takes it out of its sheath, disappearing. She reappears outside of the house and meets back up with Ren. She takes the sword out of its sheath again and goes back into Evernow to find her father.
In the chaos, Noah, Quentin, and Taylor manage to catch a Harris and tie him to a chair.
Erica and and Harris meet Richard at the warehouse with the device. Richard says things are happening more quickly than he thought — less than a week. He shows Erica the simulation that he has run, which shows that with the magnetic pulse reversing, they are going to be defenseless against solar radiation. He reports that a coronal mass ejection unlike anything the world has ever seen is headed Earth’s way. 96% of all species on Earth will be wiped out in a matter of days.
Farah and Malina
Farah and Malina have managed to make it to St. Pierre, Quebec. Farah has Malina hide in an abandoned building, while she goes to meet with someone.
While Farah is waiting to meet her contact, she calls Casper to let him know. Then she leaves, turning herself invisible. However, a Harris clone is able to see her with his EPIC glasses.
Farah returns to Malina, and Harris and 2 agents follow her there. Malina uses her powers to push the agents away, and the two of them run away while the agents are down. However, the agents catch up to them, and follow them inside of a warehouse. Malina tries to use her powers against them, but they have brought an Evo with them, which prevents her from doing so. Farah gets shot, and gives Malina an envelope to open “when the time is right.” Then she tells Malina to run, which she does. She finds a logging truck, and hides on top of the timber, under a tarp.
Tommy
Tommy gets booked into the Evo system, and a tracker is placed in his wrist. An agent questions him. Through the line of questioning, Tommy finds out he was adopted. He teleports away. Casper arrives just then and offers the agent a penny for his thoughts.
Tommy teleports home, where their landlord is evicting them due to Tommy not registering as an Evo. He then teleports to Emily’s bedroom and tells her that he’s adopted. Emily encourages Tommy to talk to his mother and give her a chance to explain.
Tommy teleports to to hospital and confronts his mother about lying to him. She says she’ll tell him everything. But Casper shows up just then, questioning whether she is really ready to tell him everything. Tommy learns that Casper has been around for over a year because he is very important. Casper says that Tommy has a destiny: he’s going to help save the world. However, Tommy says he’s not, and teleports away.
Carlos
Carlos returns to the garage to find Jose and Father Mauricio missing. He finds the mask inside Father Mauricio’s car. He goes to the police station and asks to speak to Detective Dearing, knowing that he’s the one who took Jose and Father Mauricio. It seems that the police have just gotten in a shipment of EPIC glasses. Two officers put them on, and immediately see that Dearing is an Evo. They promptly restrain him and take him away. Carlos sees what happened, and leaves.
The police officers load up Dearing in a van to transport him. However, the van comes under attack. It’s Carlos dressed in his new suit. He takes off the van doors, and Dearing runs out trying to fight him. However, Carlos is able to easily overpower him, and demands that Dearing take him to his friends. He then puts Dearing into the trunk and drives off as the officers fire at him.
Luke
Luke returns to his home in Rochester, New York. Joanne is not there. He looks around his son’s room in grief. Then he watches a video on his laptop of him and his son building a model sailboat and putting it in the water. Crying, he calls someone named Marcy and asks to see Don right away. Don comes over, and Luke offers to sell him his share of the practice. Luke says he is atoning.
He goes back into his son’s room, and uses his power to catch a picture of his wife and son on fire. Then he throws it on the floor, along with his wedding ring. Soon, the flames spread and catch the room on fire. Luke exits the burning house with the sailboat that he made with his son.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 5 of Heroes Reborn: The Lion’s Den
Ok, Heroes Reborn, you have my attention. In that last minute of the show, with the reveal about the massive coronal mass ejection (which I learned is not the same as a solar flare) coming to wipe out the Earth’s population within a matter of days, you have finally managed to grab my attention. This brings up a lot of questions. Is this something that is occurring naturally? Or is this something that Renautas is causing? Are they really so set on starting over that they would trigger the destruction of most of the Earth and its population? Or are they actually legitimately trying to save humanity? What exactly does the device in that warehouse do?
How is Tommy going to be able to use his powers to save the world? Is he going to teleport everyone somewhere? Who is Tommy’s father? Where is he, and why does he need saving? What powers does his father have? What about his biological mother? Who is this woman who has taken him in as her son, and how did this happen? What about Malina, how will she help save the world? And what’s in that envelope that Farah gave her?
As you can see, I’ve suddenly found myself quite invested in Heroes Reborn, much more so than I have been up to this point. I just hope that the answers they give us are good enough to keep me interested.
Josh’s Thoughts: Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 5: The Lion’s Den
So it looks like Renautas has its own version of “Cerebro” going (an X-Men reference for those unfamiliar), but thankfully (but sadly) since Molly is now dead, the Evo locating machine is not fully functional. I think these goggle things are a bit cheesy, but they make for an interesting way for regular humans to have an edge on Evos–with the element of surprise and “tracking”.
Poor Tommy though. He seems to be having a tough time. He is now in the “system”, so his life is going to have to be played a lot more carefully. But he figured out he is adopted, which has to be mind-blowing, and apparently his father was someone that might have been an Evo too. So far, Tommy has been one of more favorite storylines.
I am warming up to Carlos’ storyline too. Like I said last recap, he is feeling more and more like a Batman character to me. It is too bad for the crooked cop that was selling out his own “kind”, and now has been sold out by his own fellow cops. What I didn’t quite get is, why didn’t he have a game plan for this? I would have thought he would have known these devices were on the way. Why did he just wait for them? Either way, I am curious to see what happens after Carlos hopefully rescues the priest and his nephew.
As for Luke, he seems to be on a path for redemption I think, and even seems to indicate it when he talks to his doctor friend. He is going to “atone” he says. Hopefully this will help me appreciate his character more, as I thought that his and Joanne’s storyline were the weakest of the series so far. I hope to see this improve a lot now.
As for Malina, her scene climbing onto the truck carrying timber felt very reminiscent of Rogue hoping into Logan’s trailer in the original X-Men movie. I am not sure if it was intentional, but I feel like it was. But it looks like we figured out what this evil Evo Shadow’s power is. It seems to neutralize other Evo’s powers.
My final thoughts revolve around Erica and Renautas. It sort of sounds like that despite her willingness to sacrifice Evos to her own benefit, she might be trying to accomplish something good–that is unless I am misunderstanding the scene where they talk about the solar radiation. It could be that they are causing this cataclysmic event, but from the sounds of it, they are just trying to stop it. I guess I will have to see more next episode.
