Episode Recap of Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 8: June 13th Part Two
In the aftermath of the explosion at the Odessa Summit, Erica makes a statement blaming everything on the Evos and Mohinder Suresh. At the hospital, Quentin goes in search of his sister, Phoebe, and past Noah spots future Noah and follows him, preventing him from shooting and killing Erica. Instead, the shot seems to hit her bottom instead. Quentin drags Erica into the stairwell and demands to know where Phoebe is. She says he has to help her first. Meanwhile, the two Noahs step into a room to talk, and past Noah berates future Noah.
Hiro teleports himself, Angela, and the babies, but it turns out they are still in Odessa in present time. Angela realizes that since the babies are Petrellis, one of them absorbed Claire’s powers, which is why she died, and that they also absorbed Hiro’s powers. Angela says they should keep the babies separate so that one won’t absorb the others’ powers. Hiro takes the boy, Nathan, while Angela takes the girl, Malina.
Meanwhile, Carlos Gutierrez is testifying before the U.S. Army about something that happened in Afghanistan.
Future Noah fills present Noah, Molly, and Casper in about Claire and her babies. Future Noah asks Molly to find Hiro, but she says she’s not seeing him, though she is seeing his power in Odessa. Future Noah tells present Noah that the only way to protect the children is to forget. Future Noah and Molly leave the room, and present Noah tells Casper he wants him to take his memory at the Summit. However, Harris comes in and knocks Casper out with his gun.
At the Summit, Luke and Joanne search for their son, Dennis. They find his dead body brought in on a stretcher.
Harris holds present Noah at gunpoint, and brings Matt Parkman in to read Noah’s mind about Claire. Matt finds out that she died in childbirth. However, Noah’s foot touches Casper’s penny, and he forgets anything about the babies. Casper knocks Harris out, and Parkman lets Casper and Noah go.
Carlos goes to Farah’s hotel room. She tells him that her tour is up and she has a new assignment. Carlos tells him that they’re giving him a medal for saving some men – for what she did. She is letting him take the credit so that she is not revealed as an Evo. He kisses her, but she slaps him and tells him to leave.
Hachiro Otomo hears on the news that Hiro is one of the Summit terrorists and calls Erica, who is in a hospital bed, telling her that’s impossible, because Hiro is in the game. Erica says that his job is done. Otomo tries to log in to Evernow, but his access is denied. Harris confirms that Hiro is still trapped in the game, but that either a future or past Hiro was at the Summit. Erica tells Harris that they don’t need a spare Hiro, and that Otomo’s time has expired as well. Harris says he will take care of both of them. Erica also tells Harris to find Noah and get him to tell him where Claire’s baby is.
We then see Otomo use his power to extract Katana Girl from the game and create a human version as a backdoor in the game to save Hiro. She attacks him, but then he tells her that he is her father, and she apologizes.
Future Noah and Molly go to where she detected Hiro’s powers. It turns out to be the house where an older, powerless Hiro has been living with Nathan (Tommy) since he took him back in time to 1999. Noah admits it was him who tried to assassinate Erica. Hiro explains that Molly actually tracked Nathan, and that Nathan absorbed Claire’s power and his own, but that he is only able to hold one power at a time. Hiro has been raising Nathan as his son, and Hiro introduces Nathan to his grandfather, Noah. Hiro and Nathan’s mother, who was the doctor that delivered Nathan, fell in love.
Just then, Harris comes in and grabs Nathan, pointing a gun at his head. But Nathan uses his power to teleport Harris away. Another Harris approaches from the other side of the room, and Noah shoots him. The Harris clone disintegrates. Noah apologizes to Hiro about the consequences of going back in time, telling him, “They’re onto us.” Noah asks Nathan to take him to see Angela, his great-grandmother.
Back with Hachiro Otomo and Katana Girl, he tells her that her name is Miko, and that the reason she doesn’t remember anything is because she was in a terrible accident.
At Luke and Joanne’s motel room, the Evo that Luke saved at the Summit stops by to thank him for saving his life. Joanne is upset that Luke saved an Evo instead of their son. Luke tries to explain that it wasn’t like that. Joanne slaps the Evo and he fights back, accidentally knocking Joanne over. Luke goes to attack the Evo, but he uses his freezing power to defend himself. Joanne comes up behind the Evo and stabs him repeatedly with a pair of scissors.
At the Summit, past Noah’s memory’s are taken by Casper. He looks around at the rubble, wondering what happened, and tries to search for Claire. A woman helps him. It’s the woman who becomes his fiance.
Nathan and Noah go see Angela, whose hair is all gray now. They see Malina, but Angela says not yet, and that he mustn’t get too close. Noah explains the situation to her. She says she has had visions of the world ending. Nathan is confident that he will help save everyone.
Quentin stops by Erica’s hospital room and demands to see his sister.
After Noah and Nathan have left, Farah goes to see Angela. Angela tells her that when the time comes, Malina and her brother must be brought together in Odessa, but no sooner.
Harris knocks on the door of Hachiro Otomo’s apartment, and Otomo seems to know what his fate is. Before answering the door, he tells Miko that the sword is the key and that he loves her. Then he leaves with Harris.
Quentin gets to see his sister at the facility where she is being held in a suburb of Odessa. She says that they’ve only done good things for her, and that Erica gave her a purpose. Phoebe is confident that Erica is going to save them, and that this is the only way.
At Hiro’s house, Casper reports to future Noah, who tells him that Claire’s children must remain hidden. Noah asks him to watch over Nathan. He asks Molly to monitor Nathan and Malina remotely, and warns her that Erica will come after her because of her power. Molly asks Nathan to send her to India to tell Mohinder’s mother the truth about her. Then Nathan sends Noah back to the future.
Just then, Harrises pull up outside. Hiro tells Nathan to take his mom and Casper somewhere far away, and to read the 9th Wonders comic book, as it may foretell his future. Hiro says goodbye to Nathan and his mother. Nathan doesn’t want to leave without Hiro, but Hiro insists, and says this is his destiny, and that he was sworn to protect Nathan’s destiny. Hiro attacks the three Harrises with two samurai swords.
When Nathan, his mother, and Casper arrive at their destination, Nathan’s mother has Casper take all his memories, except for her.
When Noah returns to the future in Midian, Colorado, Quentin is still alive and greets him. Noah tells Quentin about Claire’s twins, who are 16 years old now, and that he has to find them and get to Odessa. While Noah goes to look for his gun, Quentin calls Erica and tells her what Noah just told him, and that Noah is going to take him right to Claire’s children.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 8 of Heroes Reborn: June 13th Part Two
Talk about timey-wimey. This one kind of made my head hurt. But that’s a good thing. I like to contemplate all the intricacies of time travel, and consider how certain actions can change and affect things. In this case, it seems like the majority of things happened the same way they always happened, and that they could not have happened that way if not for Noah and Hiro time traveling to the past all along. For the most part, almost everything seems to match up to present day, and explain how things got to be how they are. However, it also seems like there is one major difference — that Quentin is not only still alive when Noah returns to the present, but also that he is working for Erica. It’s very odd the way that Quentin greets Noah, like everything is normal, but then when he gets on the phone with Erica and reveals everything to her, it sort of feels like he was there waiting for Noah to return from the past and feed him information, that somehow he knew to be there. In this new present, were Quentin and Noah working together the same way there were in the former present? In the former present, was Quentin working for Erica all along, or was this something that was changed when Noah went back in time this time? I’m wondering what happened differently this time around to change things, and what else is different in this new present?
Now we know that Hiro is the father that Tommy/Nathan’s mother referred to when she made a comment about not wanting Tommy to go looking for his father. It didn’t even cross my mind that Hiro would be the person she was referring to, though it did cross my mind that she might have been referring to the man that Tommy thought of as his father, that might have left them long ago. But more so I thought she was referring to his biological father. I wonder if we will ever find out who that is. We also find out the reason that Claire died — that Nathan/Tommy absorbed her healing power when she gave birth to him, and therefore she was unable to heal herself and died during childbirth. This was an interesting way to pay homage to the Petrelli family, and actually made sense, so I liked this explanation overall. On the other hand, it is odd that the babies would have any abilities at birth, as I seem to recall that Evos don’t start developing their powers until adolescence. In any case, apparently Nathan/Tommy is only able to absorb one power at a time, but I’m wondering if this is something that can be developed and that he might be able to absorb an unlimited number of powers. Also, it kind of bothered me that Hiro stayed behind to fight the Harrises. Why couldn’t he just teleport away with Nathan, his mother, and Casper? Hiro’s not dead, is he? He seems like he can handle himself. Though he is a bit older and no longer has powers… Nah, they wouldn’t kill Hiro off like that, right?
Oh, and it was cool to see Matt Parkman again, finally. I hope we get to see a little more of him, rather than that short scene we saw him in this episode.
But anyway, I am enjoying Heroes Reborn at this point, thanks to all the time travel. Now I am anxious to see how things have changed in the present!
Josh’s Thoughts: Heroes Reborn, Season 1 Episode 8: June 13th Part Two
So this episode basically finishes the story as to why the future is the way it is. I am still wondering what sort of “timeline” method they are using–Terminator 2 style, where everything is always the way it is, or if it is more Back to the Future style, where things can be changed in the past. It is hard to tell, as the events seemed, for the most part, to lead to the same place. There were some conveniences that made everything line up the way it should, namely with Casper taking away memories of people like Noah and Tommy/Nathan in order to preserve the timeline.
It was a pretty tense scene when we see the Past Noah getting his mind read by Parkman. I couldn’t believe that Parkman went to the dark side. On top of that, I liked the part of the scene when Casper tosses a penny under the door to help Noah forget what Parkman is trying to retrieve.
There were a couple of other interesting tidbits to the episode too—the beginning of Katana Girl, and who her “father” really was. Then seeing Nathan’s progression, from a baby, to instantly seeing him as a teenager, to then seeing him lose his memories, and become the more angsty teenager we know now.
What I was really upset about though, is Quentin’s new reveal, as a spy for Erica. My question for this though, was this always the case? Or is this a result of the timeline changes Noah made?
I would guess that the timeline is more Back to the Future-esce because of Hiro’s mentioning of “butterflies”, and before I would not have thought Quentin had the possibility of being a bad guy. The way things shook out in the past this time around made me think that it has to have been a result of Noah’s actions. On top of that, Noah seems to remember both versions of the timeline, as best he can with Casper anyway, so that leads me to believe the timeline has been changed, and this is the new “present”.
