Episode Recap of Legends, Season 1 Episode 5: Rogue
In this episode of Legends, a lot more information about Martin Odum is coming to light. Before, we saw Martin Odum having trouble remembering where he proposed to his wife at. Now, he asks his wife about a scar he has, and she explains it was from a bad car accident in 2004. He can’t seem to remember that either, but again his wife reassures him. He tries to look into the accident further, but is unable to find any information regarding it.
Martin decides to enlist another of his new team members into looking into some information for him (didn’t this already get someone killed?) She is able to retrieve a phone number from the book McCombs gave him (the man that died in the subway). Martin decides to pay the owner of this phone number a visit.
This man is named Dennis Evans, and he is initially hostile towards Odum. Eventually he simmers down, but we see that he is a high strung guy, worried about someone coming for him. Then Evans realizes that he recognizes Odum from Iraq. In the year 2004. The year he was supposed to have been in a big car accident. Evans says that everyone in the photo is now dead, with the exception of them two.
Evans also says that he and McCombs had talked, and that McCombs was looking for someone named Kyle Dobson.
So while all this is going on, Crystal runs into Rice at a bar. For some reason she has no idea who he is, and begins hitting on him. He reveals himself to be investigating Odum, and Crystal is initially annoyed, but after hearing a little of what Rice has to say, she decides to provide some help. Crystal and Rice are looking into the McCombs murder. They visit McCombs’ ex-Doctor, and after some pressing, figure out that Evans is involved with McCombs. They move on to visiting Evans’ house, who is now dead–murdered.
Crystal and Rice then decide to pay Odum a visit at his apartment–only he is no longer home. They find out that Martin is under a new Legend–Len Barlow.
Heading to Houston, Odum, now assuming Len Barlow, tries to locate Kyle Dobson. He finds an old CI and he provides some intel. They both head to a bar, where one of Dobson’s girlfriends frequents. After some finesse, and sweet talking, along with a little shenanigans, Odum steals the girlfriend’s car, with her in it. She’s pretty drunk, and doesn’t seem to mind so much, and Odum asks her to take him to see her boyfriend. She obliges, and they head to an automotive repair shop.
Inside some men are working–but not on cars. We see a missile briefly before it is covered up by a man. Finally meeting Dobson, Dobson says that Odum looks familiar, but can’t seem to place him. Odum on the other hand, doesn’t recall him at all. After a brief tussle, Odum takes out Dobson’s men and takes Dobson, putting him into the car he “borrowed”. Unfortunately, in the process of his evacuation to wherever he was heading, the car is sideswiped by a truck, banging the car up pretty good.
There is one big reveal in this episode as well–Odum talks with his wife on the phone, towards the end of the episode, while waiting to “kidnap” Dobson’s girlfriend. She tells him that she loves him, but what happens after the conversation is the big reveal–she turns to someone mostly off camera and says something to the effect of, “Was that good enough?” Apparently Mrs. Odum isn’t exactly who she says she is.
Josh’s Thoughts: Legends, Season 1 Episode 5: Rogue
I am really digging Legends so far. So far the show has done an excellent job of dribbling answers out to us, while slowing providing more at the same time. Too often shows keep their big secret locked away for a full season–or longer in some cases! That gets frustrating to me, I want to open doors, and find new, more intriguing doors to unlock. So far, Legends has that down.
So, we now know that his “wife” is in on whatever is going on with Martin Odum. If she is, most certainly people Odum is working with would have to be. Gates probably? Maybe Crystal? So far I am not thinking Crystal is though–considering she seems just as intrigued about the McCombs murder and now Evans murder as Rice is. Hopefully we get some more information next week on this!
But who is Martin Odum then? How could someone make him forget who he really was? Is the show eventually going to turn a little more sci-fi with its technology and explain it as a brain washing thing? Another alternative way this could have happened to Odum, is perhaps, while in Iraq he suffered some sort of mental break, and Martin Odum was the Legend that came to the surface? Maybe when he returned state-side, Gates took him in, cultivated this new identity to help stabilize him. Maybe his wife really is his wife, but knows him as another name? After talking with Gates perhaps everyone thought it would be best if he remained as “Martin Odum”.
This Iraq reveal has to have something important going on with it. Hopefully Dobson will reveal what went on in Iraq, and we will find out some more pieces of the puzzle.
I guess the last thing to mention is Len Barlow. I have to say, so far Len Barlow has been my least favorite Legend. I think Sean Bean had a little difficulty with this western accent. But still, he was very interesting to watch, and I really hope to see more of these personalities surface! What could be a lot of fun, is Odum having to switch personalities on the fly, where he moves quickly from one situation to another that requires almost instantaneous adjustments.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 5 of Legends: Rogue
I knew it. I knew his “wife” was in on it. If that’s who she really even is. She became even more suspicious at the beginning of this episode, when we see her and Martin hanging out at his apartment. Wait, what? Aren’t they separated? I thought that was kind of weird for them to be spending time together, having a good ol’ time. Especially considering that he and his wife hadn’t seemed to be on that great of terms the last couple of times we even saw them talking. So it seemed really out of the blue that they would all of a sudden be together like this. That is, unless someone told her to warm up to Martin. Then when she was on the phone with him at the end and said “I love you” all sweetly, it sounded really fake – and we immediately saw why: because there were people there monitoring her call to Martin, telling her what to say, wanting her to make nice with him. But for what purpose exactly? That remains to be seen. Maybe to get him distracted from pursuing the McCombs case and his identity, if he’s too wrapped up in his family life? But I’m pretty sure that even if Martin and his wife did get back together, it wouldn’t change anything. Martin’s like a dog with a bone, there’s no stopping him.
So then we also get this random teamup between Crystal and Rice. Didn’t see that one coming, but it works, I guess. And they gotta find a way to keep Crystal and Rice in the story with Martin gallivanting off my himself doing his own thing, right?
As for the Len Barlow Legend, I didn’t really buy Sean Bean as a cowboy. His British accent came through too much when trying to do the Southern accent. I think he also should have worn a cowboy hat! At the same time, being from Texas, actually only about 80 miles from Houston, I kind of resented the fact that just because he was going to Texas, his Legend had to be a cowboy. It’s such a stereotype and very annoying. But anyway.
What a cliffhanger ending! When the car crashed and the episode ended I was like ahhhh, why are you ending right there?? I really wanted to see what happened next, to see if he actually got some answers out of Dobson. Guess we’ll have to wait until the next episode!
