Detroit, 3000
In Detroit in the year 3000, Rip pays a visit to Charles, aka Doctor Mid-Nite, of the Justice Society of America, who is no longer blind. Doctor Mid-Nite has been working on a neural amplifier that can help stop crime. Rip has other plans for it though. He shoots Doctor Mid-Nite and demands to know where the fragment of the Spear is. Rip’s guess is that Doctor Mid-Nite has hidden it inside of him.
The Legends show up to the last known location of the Spear fragment, and find Doctor Mid-Nite’s body. They see Rip’s name written in blood beside him.
Back on the Waverider, Amaya blames Sara for placing the whole of reality at risk. But just then, Gideon announes that Lily’s algorithm has located another fragment of the Spear — on a small island named Britannia in the year 507.
Camelot, 507
Rory figures out that Professor Stein stole something from Doctor Mid-Nite’s lab. The others venture outside and encounter Queen Guinevere and are brought inside the castle to meet King Arthur, despite Nate insisting that this place shouldn’t historically exist. Ray acts as their spokesperson, as he is an enthusiast about this time period. King Arthur brings forth Merlin — who turns out to be Courtnery, aka Stargirl, from the JSA.
The Legends bring Stargirl back to the Waverider to speak to her. Stargirl explains how Rip visited the JSA members, who broke the Spear of Destiny and went to different time periods with the fragments.
Later, they dine at the Round Table, and Ray introduces himself to Sir Galahad. Meanwhile, King Arthur is fighting a foe outside in the woods — who turns out to be Damien Darhk. Rip also approaches.
King Arthur returns to the castle, seemingly having captured the Black Knight. However, it’s a ruse, and King Arthur is under the Rip’s control, thanks to the technology that Rip stole from Doctor Mid-Nite. King Arthur takes Stargirl hostage. Fighting breaks out, and King Arthur kills Sir Galahad, then places a knife to his own throat. Damien Darhk gives them an ultimatum: bring him the Spear fragment by dawn, or else he’ll bring an army controlled by the same thing that King Arthur is being controlled by.
Sara and Stargirl encourage Guinevere to lead Arthur’s men. Amaya tries to convince Stargirl to get the spear fragment out of the castle, but Stargirl says she’s not going anywhere, and neither is the fragment.
Back on the Waverider, Stein examines the technology he took from Doctor Mid-Nite, and tries to figure out how to hack it. He and Jax decide to use Rory as a test subject, but it doesn’t seem to be working.
Meanwhile, under the direction of Damien Darhk and Rip, King Arthur prepares an army to march on Camelot. Stein picks up on the signal and realizes that the Legion is coming for Camelot.
Outside the castle, Guinevere rallies her troops, giving an inspirational speech. Ray decides to join Guinevere’s army to live out his dreams, despite Nate’s protests.
Inside the castle, Amaya uses their fragment locator to figure out where it is. It turns out to be on the sword in the stone. Amaya uses her powers to pull the sword out of the stone. But Stargirl walks in and tells her to put the sword down. She confirms that she has fallen in love with King Arthur. Eventually, Stargirl tells Amaya to take the fragment, but says that she’s staying.
Meanwhile, Ray has suited up for battle and turned Galahad’s sword into a light saber. Nate reports that there’s no need for him to join the battle, though, since Amaya now has the fragment, so they can leave. However, Ray refuses to run, even after Nate reveals that he saw Ray’s funeral in a manuscript.
In the Waverider, the rest of the Legends are getting ready to go, even though some of them don’t think it feels right leaving with people in trouble. Sara doesn’t want to risk the Legion of Doom getting another piece of the Spear fragment though. But then Nate runs in and tells them what Ray is doing.
We then see Guinevere knighting Ray as Sir Raymond of the Palms. Back in the Waverider, an argument breaks out about whether to go and help him, or to abandon him. Ultimately, Sara decides for the team to join the fight.
Jax suggests that the reason Doctor Mid-Nite’s tech wasn’t working was because it’s based on intensity, not brain power, so they reverse it, and try to have Rory control Stein. It works. They then scramble to figure out how to amplify the signal to take control of the evil army.
Out on the battlefield, the two sides rush toward each other, and the battle begins. Jax and Stein hook up the new improved tech to Rory’s mind, and Rory unleashes his darkness upon the evil army. King Arthur, now back to his senses, attacks Rip, knocking him off his horse. Rip calls for Damien’s help as the rest of the army gets ready to attack him, but Damien rides away on his horse. Ray takes it upon himself to chase Damien down on his own horse. Sara approaches the wounded Rip, and tells him that she’s saving his life.
Meanwhile, Ray finds Damien’s horse tied to a tree, so he gets off his horse and looks around for Damien. He finds him, and fights him with his light saber sword. Ray knocks Damien to the ground, telling him to yield. Damien says that he submits — then pulls out his laser gun and shoots Ray, who collapses to the ground. Later, Nate catches up to Ray and finds him laying on the ground. But Ray was wearing his ATOM suit under his armor, so he’s okay.
Back at the castle, Amaya and Courtney say their goodbyes, since Courtney is going to stay behind. Sara and Ray say their goodbyes to Queen Guinevere as well. Guinevere tells Ray there will always be a place at the Round Table for him. Before they leave, Sara goes back and gives Guinevere a kiss.
Back on the Waverider, Jax goes to talk to Rip, who is being held captive in the cell. Jax threatens to kill Rip if he hurts anyone on the team. After Jax leaves, Rip addresses Gideon, who still acknowledges him as Captain.
Her Thoughts on Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 Episode 12: Camelot/3000
I’ve come to realize that you can’t take Legends of Tomorrow too seriously. It’s one of those fun shows where unbelievable, unrealistic things happen, and you just roll with it and have fun with it. Part of the fun of this show is getting to see the team travel throughout history and see them interact with famous historical figures. It’s not only fun for us as the audience to watch, but for the characters to live out their childhood dreams, like in this episode for Ray.
It did feel a bit odd though that any member of the team even considered leaving Ray behind for even a moment. It was also uncharacteristic for Sara to want to run from a fight. We the audience knew this wouldn’t happen, we all knew that they would help, even if it was written for us to doubt it.
So now the Legends have Rip back, which I’m glad about, but he’s still evil, unfortunately. How can they change that? It seems that Gideon doesn’t know the difference, and still refers to Rip as Captain. What kind of havoc will Rip wreak by taking advantage of this? We shall see…
