Recap of Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 Episode 5: Compromised
In Miami 1987, Damien Darhk is paid with an ancient ax during a drug deal. The DEA shows up, but Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne, takes care of that. Thawne then asks Darhk to be his partner.
Jax expresses his frustration to Stein and Sara that they’re merely “time janitors” – cleaning up messes that others have made of time. Meanwhile, Mick teaches Ray how to use Captain Cold’s gun.
Nate uses a time seismograph to detect time quakes and locate aberrations. An aberration is detected December 7, 1987 at the White House – the day before Reagan and Gorbachev signed the INF treaty ending the Cold War. Amaya says she’ll contact the JSA Academy there, and Nate volunteers to go with her, while the others come up with a plan to break into the White House — by going on a tour.
When Nate and Amaya get to the JSA Academy, it appears abandoned, and Amaya wonders what happened to the JSA. She regrets having left 1942. We see a figure watching them from the shadows.
At the White House, the Legends split up. Stein and Jax pair off, and Stein sees himself in the White House — which must have been caused by the aberration.
Ray and Mick team up, and they eat some of President Reagan’s jelly beans. They also see Damien Darhk, which they report to Sara.
Suddenly, at the JSA Academy, it goes dark. A costumed figure appears, then he reveals his face and asks Amaya why she abandoned them. Nate knocks the old man out. Amaya tells him it’s Todd, aka Obsidian, from the JSA.
Sara breaks off from the tour group and pulls out a knife. A Secret Service Agents pulls his gun on her, but Mick knocks her out. However, more agents show up. But Ray and Mick use their heat and cold guns against them. Ray crosses their streams though, which shorts out their guns. Luckily, FIRESTORM flies in and is able to stop the bullets, giving the others time to break through the window and get away.
Back at the Waverider, Stein reprimands Sara for going after vengeance. They try to figure out what Damien Darhk is up to.
Obsidian wakes up, and Amaya explains where she went. Then Obsidian explains what happened to the JSA – the team never made it back after a mission in 1956. Amaya promises Todd that she’ll fix this, and apologizes for leaving.
The Legends all meet back up at the Waverider, and figure out that Darhk joined the Reagan administration. Gideon reports that Darhk has a meeting in the Georgetown Park that night. Sara sends Ray and Mick to spy on the meeting. They sit in a van for their stakeout. Mick tells Ray to ignore his earlier instructions and stop acting like Snart.
They listen in as Darhk meets up with a KGB member. They realize he was never interested in the nuclear treaty, he was working a side deal with the KGB. Just then, they notice Stein’s younger self approaching Darhk. He introduces himself, and asks him to push a proposal through. However, young Stein then notices the watch that the KGB member is wearing, and comments that it’s highly irregular for Darhk to be meeting with a Soviet member. Darhk stabs young Stein, causing present Stein to collapse.
Ray and Mick bring young Stein to the Waverider, and both Steins are treated in the med bay. Stein admonishes his younger self for blowing off Clarissa, with whom he was supposed to be having dinner for her birthday. Jax says he’ll go to the hotel and tell Clarissa that her husband is working late.
Nate and Amaya go talk to Todd to ask for his help getting to Damien Darhk at the State Dinner that will take place the next evening. Amaya reveals that she and Rex Tyler, Nate’s grandfather, were planning on leaving the JSA and starting a life together after the war. Todd is reluctant to help, but Amaya talks him into it.
Stein and Ray have a conversation about learning who they truly are. Sara comes in and reports that Amaya got them invites to the State Dinner. Stein makes nice with Sara.
The Legends dress up and go to the State Dinner. Stein and Jax run into Clarissa there, and Stein asks her to dance. Sara asks Amaya what she plans to do when she finds Rex’s killer. Amaya seems to think there’s no other option than to arrest him.
Damien Darhk finally shows up, then goes down and meets with the KGB. The Legends, aside from Ray and Mick, confront him there, and a fight breaks out. Todd joins in to help. Meanwhile, Ray tries to locate the bomb. Sara goes off to stop Darhk. Ray and Mick evacuate the Dinner, and find the bomb under an overturned table. Firestorm flies in and rescues Clarissa, while Ray tries to figure out how to disarm the bomb. Mick gives him some words of encouragement, which causes Ray to figure out how to science his way out of this — by dismantling the cold gun. He is successful in stopping the bomb.
Meanwhile, Darhk shoots Todd, to Amaya’s dismay. Sara comes in just then and throws a star into Darhk’s hand. Darhk remembers her from the 40s. Sara announces that she’s sparing his life, and also tells him she’s from the future and reveals how his life ends – with him defeated and alone. Just then, the Reverse Flash runs in and takes Darhk away. Sara reports to Nate that she swiped from Darhk what the KGB gave him.
Young Stein recovers, and present Stein debriefs him, as well as scolds him about the way he’s been treating Clarissa. Stein makes it clear that the only thing that brings meaning to his life is Clarissa, and advises him to cherish her. Young Stein promises to do so.
Todd declines to continue on with the Legends, revealing that he met someone, and he’s waiting at home for him. Todd advises her that if she’s lucky enough to find love again, to embrace it. After Todd leaves, Amaya tells Nate more about his grandfather.
Darhk begs Thawne to take him with him so that he can change his destiny. Thawne reveals that he has created a time machine for Darhk to sit in, while Thawne runs circles around it and opens a breach for them to pass through.
Her Thoughts on Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 Episode 5: Compromised
When the team decided that Sara would be their new captain, I was a little surprised that the issue of Damien Darhk didn’t come up. There were so many times when Sara snuck off, or attempted to sneak off due to her vendetta against Darhk, and others had to fix things. It’s kind of hard to stick to the mission at hand and lead a team, when one has their own agenda in mind. It was inevitable that this issue would come up. However, it didn’t seem to be too much of an issue by the end, and Sara was able to put herself in check.
This seemed to be more of a relationship building episode, though of unexpected relationships. Mick and Ray grew closer, as Mick realized he didn’t actually want Ray to become Snart, but instead wanted him to be himself. Stein talked to his younger self in an effort to maintain his own relationship with his wife. And finally, it seems pretty obvious that the show is trying to push Amaya and Nate together — even though Amaya was in love with Nate’s grandfather. Kinda weird and creepy. In any case, it seems like Amaya is here to stay.
Oh, and one last relationship grew stronger — Damien Darhk and Reverse Flash. They are now traveling together through time and possibly different Earths? I’m not sure exactly what these two are up to, but with their evilness combined, it seems like it could be quite catastrophic…
