Nate is worried about the whereabouts of his grandfather, Commander Steel, but Gideon is still working on communicating with the Medallion.
Meanwhile, Rip is being kept in the brig. He tries to communicate with Gideon, who has been prohibited from following his instructions. However, he gives Gideon a few code words that appear to override that order. The brig doors open, while the other doors close and lock. Rip retrieves a gun and the Medallion, then heads toward the jump ship, leaving Gideon to take over the navigation controls. Jax’s solution is to shut down the ship. Suddenly, Gideon starts a self-destruct sequence. Nate, Amaya, and Rory find Rip, and Rory is able to sucker punch him, knocking him out. While Jax tries to reboot the system, the Waverider crash lands into some snow.
Gideon reports that they have landed in the Cretaceous Period — the same year that Rip’s time scatter left Ray. The ship’s delineator was lost during impact, so Ray volunteers to go out and get it, and Sara sends Nate and Amaya with him.
Rory has the idea to get inside Rip’s head to find out where Commander Steel is. Gideon explains that the process is called Cognitive Intrusion — where one consciousness enters another. Sara volunteers to be the one to go into Rip’s mind. Jax insists on going in too so he can be Sara’s backup.
Ray uses a device to track the delineator, but his old dinosaur “friend” Gertrude is out and about rather than hibernating, so they have to avoid her. Ray sees that they’re getting close to the delineator, so he goes up ahead alone to check things out, leaving Nate and Amaya alone together to flirt. Courtney (Stargirl) changed her mind about fraternizing with teammates. However, they are interrupted by Ray running from Gertrude, so they have to run too.
Stein hooks Sara and Jax’s minds up to Rip’s and they go inside. It looks like the Waverider, so they head toward the bridge to look for him. But first, they get some guns to protect themselves from the various foes that come after them. Sara ends up having to face off against a version of herself, but Jax blasts the fake Sara with a gun.
Ray confesses to Nate and Amaya that he had eaten one of Gertrude’s eggs. He brings them to where he lived for six months when he was trapped in that time period. Ray goes off to catch them some fresh iguana to eat, again leaving Nate and Amaya alone. They are about to kiss, when Ray suddenly returns very quickly with an iguana.
Sara holds off evil Ray and evil Rory while Jax goes off in search of Rip. But they capture her and knock her out. When she wakes up, she’s in the brig — with a skittish Rip. Meanwhile, Jax hears someone banging out “SOS” and thinks that it’s Sara. However, when he finds the source, it’s not Sara — it’s a woman, who confirms that she is Gideon. Jax tells Gideon that he needs to find Rip so he can ask him where Nate’s grandfather is, but Gideon says that it won’t be easy getting that information. Eobard Thawne twisted Rip’s consciousness, turning friends into foes — except for Gideon, since he didn’t realize an AI needed twisting. Meanwhile, Sara tries to talk to Rip, but he blasts her back with his mind.
Amaya goes out to get more wood for the fire, leaving Ray and Nate to talk. Ray tells Nate that he can’t date Amaya because eventually Amaya has to go home, where she’ll have a daughter, and eventually a granddaughter, who will inherit the totem and become a superhero. Nate wants to tell Amaya about her destiny of having her village destroyed and her granddaughter ending up in foster care, but Ray says that he can’t.
Rory advises Stein to stop treating Jax like a kid and treating him more like a partner. Inside Rip’s mind, Sara talks to Rip, saying that she needs his help, and reminds him that he’s Captain Rip Hunter. He tries to use his mind to open the brig doors — but it doesn’t work. Luckily, Jax and Gideon come just then and open the doors for them. Unfortunately, Rip doesn’t know where Commander Steel is, because his mind is still under control. They head to the parlor so he can see artifacts that might jog his memory and remind him of who he is. However, on the way there, they run into evil FIRESTORM and evil Sara. Jax and Sara fight their alter egos.
The next day, Ray, Amaya, and Nate locate the time delineator — on the top of a T-Rex nest. Ray insists on taking care of it, saying that Gertrude is his problem. However, Amaya steps forward, using her powers to calm Gertrude and communicate with her. Gertrude walks away.
Sara defeats evil Sara, and Jax is able to open the ship’s cargo bay doors and cause FIRESTORM to be sucked out. But when Sara and Jax meet back up with Gideon and Rip, evil FIRESTORM and evil Sara are back, along with evil Ray and Evil Rory. Before they attack, Rip steps forward and uses his mind to defeat the evil Legends and take back control of the ship. The place starts falling apart now that Rip knows the truth. He thanks the others for believing in him. Jax uses his wrist device to wake up, but Sara is unable to because her device had been destroyed earlier.
When Jax wakes up, he uses a defibrillator to shock Sara into waking up.
Meanwhile, inside Rip’s mind, he and Gideon share a kiss. Then he wakes up.
Later, Ray fixes the time delineator. Meanwhile, Nate and Amaya are alone on the bridge. They share a kiss, and she invites him to come to her quarters that night. Ray comes in after she leaves. They discuss Amaya, and Nate admits that he can’t keep things casual, so he decides that he should break it off — starting tomorrow.
While Jax finishes up fixing up the ship, Stein apologizes to him and says he’ll remember to treat him equally as a partner. Sara and Rip talk, while he gets back into his normal Rip Hunter outfit. He confirms that he remembers everything. Soon after, Gideon privately reveals that she remembers the kiss — and that she liked it. Rip says he liked it too.
When Rip returns to the bridge, everyone is there to welcome him back. With the pleasantries out of the way, Sara gets down to business, asking if he knows where the final piece of the Spear of Destiny is. He says that he does.
In the final scene, we see Eobard Thawne posing as a doctor at NASA in 1970, getting ready to run some tests on Commander Steel, who is about to go on a space shuttle to the moon.
Her Thoughts on Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 Episode 13: Land of the Lost
With a title like “Land of the Lost,” I was expecting this episode to be a bit more, oh, I don’t know, dino-centric?! So when there kept being this hint of a dinosaur, fondly named “Gertrude” by Ray, but then we kept not actually seeing her, I felt like this was a bit of a letdown. I wasn’t sure that we would get to see a dinosaur at all, let alone Gertrude. For landing in the Cretaceous Period, this episode didn’t feel very Cretaceous to me. Other than the eventual appearance of Gertrude the T-rex at the end, all we saw was a big snake, a dead iguana, and that’s about it. We saw Ray’s hut where he lived when he was stranded there. And then they had a campfire outside. But there wasn’t really a “Land of the Lost” ambience to the episode at all. This episode was really lacking in that department.
The appearance of Gideon as a human was surprising and interesting, especially when she and Rip kissed – and when they both admitted IRL that they liked it! Will there be some sort of romantic dynamic going forward between Rip and Gideon? Is there a possibility of transferring Gideon into a human or AI body at some point? I’d be interested in watching that. In any case, it’s good to have Rip Hunter back to his normal self. I’ve missed him. Hopefully everything really is fixed in his mind, and that the Legion of Doom isn’t able to flip a switch to turn him evil again, and hopefully he isn’t only pretending to be himself. But for now, it looks like we’re going to the moon!
