In a flashback to Star City 8 months ago, Malcolm Merlyn is watching the news, which reports Damien Darhk’s death. Right after he turns off the TV, Eobard Thawne and Damien Darhk show up at Merlyn’s place and offer to help him reverse his situation — not by time travel, but something better.
In present day, Darhk and Merlyn haven’t been able to get Rip Hunter to reveal the location of the Spear of Destiny. Merlyn says the only way to find out is through hypnosis, because Hunter’s mind is locked away.
Meanwhile, the Legends try to devise a plan to rescue Rip. They realize they need to use the Medallion as leverage, but first they have to figure out how it works. Stein says he has a friend in Central City that might be able to help with that, so they head there.
Merlyn reports to the rest of the Legion of Doom that Hunter’s mind can’t be unlocked because his memories are gone. Eobard isn’t happy, and runs off. Darhk threatens Rip with a sharp knife to get him talking. Then he pulls out Rip’s tooth. Eobard has returned, and sees that there are markings on the tooth. It’s a bar code — for banking information in Switzerland. The last recorded access date to the deposit box was in January 2025, so Eobard orders Merlyn and Eobard to go there, while he runs off.
Stein and Jax go to Jitters in Central City in 2017. It turns out that Stein’s colleague he was talking about was his daughter, Lily. She uses a device on it which gets the Medallion to transmit a hologram. Stein brings her back to the ship with him, which angers Sara because since Lily herself is an aberration, it could cause more aberrations. Stein asks the others not to tell Lily that she is an aberration.
Merlyn and Darhk bring Rip with them to Zurich, Switzerland in 2025. They give him an earpiece and instruct him to bring the contents of the safety deposit box to them. While they wait, Merlyn talks to Darhk about how he thinks it’s odd how Eobard Thawne never stays in one place for very long. Merlyn thinks Thawne is hiding something.
On the Waverider, Sara, Nate, and Amaya wonder who the speedster is, and what he wants with the Spear of Destiny.
Meanwhile in 2025, Merlyn and Darhk also wonder about Thawne’s plans with the Spear of Destiny. The bank representative leads Rip to the vault and has him perform a retinal scan. Then the next step is an access code — which Rip doesn’t know. Rip gets conflicting directions from Merlyn and Darhk whether or not to get out of there. The bank representative is about to go call security, but Darhk and Merlyn attack him. However, there must have been a silent alarm, because security comes charging in, so Merlyn and Darhk fight them off, then nonchalantly walk out of the bank before the police show up.
Lily and Ray figure out how to hook the Medallion up to Gideon, and celebrate with synthetic champagne. Lily is surprised at how real the “fake food” tastes. Mick makes a comment about “fake food for a fake person.” Ray tries to play it off, but Lily figures out that there’s something they’re not telling her. Mick reveals to her that she’s a time aberration. She asks Ray what that is, but he tells her to talk to her dad.
Merlyn and Darhk bring Rip back to the present, and begin to argue with each other. They then begin to choose weapons to fight each other with.
Lily confronts her father, who explains to her what an aberration is, and how she came to be. This upsets her, and she storms off.
Rip watches Merlyn and Darhk fight for awhile, but then he points out that this is what their “boss” wants. The two are offended, but they take his point that Thawne doesn’t treat them as equals, and agree that therefore, they need to work together against him.
Jax goes to talk to Stein, who is sitting alone drinking. He gives Stein some advice about Lily — to just tell her he loves her. The reason Stein didn’t want children the first time around was that he was afraid history would repeat itself and he would be like his own father. However, Jax says that changing history is what they do.
Meanwhile, Sara, Nate, and Amaya continue to wonder why a speedster would need to time travel. Nate thinks it’s because he doesn’t actually exist. Stein comes in and overhears their conversation, and tells them about Eobard Thawne, a man from the future whose ancestor, Eddie Thawne, sacrificed his own life so that Eobard would not exist. However, Eobard is still around because he was a member of the speed force.
Darhk and Merlyn return to the bank vault in 2025 and are able to get in with the bank manager’s override code. Meanwhile, Eobard Thawne returns to the present to find Rip alone, and Rip reveals where the others went. Thawne rushes over to 2025.
Nate reasons that Thawne is running from time, and has to keep moving to avoid his own non-existence from catching up with him. Steins says they would have to trap Thawne in one place and see what happens.
In 2025, Merlyn and Darhk lock Thawne in the bank vault with them. Thawne admits that he needs Merlyn and Darhk as much as they need him. He then tells them that something is hunting him, something that is far worse than a time wraith. It can sense the speed force, and is trying to kill him. Thawne warns the others that they’ll all die if they don’t let him out of the bank vault. They say they’ll help him if he stops treating them like lackeys. He agrees. They suggest that since this thing is attracted to the speed force, that he stop running.
Thawne steps out into the bank lobby, where the thing hunting him has appeared. Darhk advises Thawne to stand absolutely still, because then it won’t be able to sense him. The three then work together to trap the thing in the bank vault, and get away –as partners — before it can get out.
Lily asks Gideon to take her back to Central City 2017, but Gideon says that Stein has forbid her from letting her leave the ship. Stein comes in just then and apologizes to Lily about not telling her about being a time aberration. He assures her that he needed her in his life in more ways than he could imagine. Stein also tells her about being half of FIRESTORM, but she thinks he’s joking. They wish each other luck in what they’re working on, and say their goodbyes.
Meanwhile, the Legion of Doom have extracted Rip Hunter’s memories and re-uploaded them — but with a few changes to address his “shortcomings.”
Cut to New Jersey, Christmas Day 1776, and we see Rip Hunter dressed as a Revolutionary War soldier approach General Washington with a gun and pull the trigger.
Her Thoughts on Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2 Episode 10: The Legion of Doom
After seeing Rip again for the first time in a long time, and with him not being himself, I was a bit worried that when he was captured by the Legion of Doom at the end of last episode that he would disappear for awhile again. So I was glad to see that he was around for all of this episode, and that it looks like he should be around again for awhile. However, it seems that he might be working against the Legends for awhile, rather than with them, which is disappointing, because I miss the real Rip!
But yeah, I had been kind of wondering what was going to be done about Lily, if anything. It looks like nothing, and that they’re just going to let it slide. That has to be frustrating for Sara, because she has to restrain herself against doing anything to prevent her sister, Laurel’s death, while Stein gets to keep his daughter around who didn’t even exist when they left on their mission! Also, did I miss something, or has anyone else noticed that ever since Lily came into the picture, we haven’t seen or heard from Stein’s wife? Kind of odd.
Anyway, looks like the next stop for the Legends is the Revolutionary War! Could be interesting…
