This episode of Preacher begins with a school mascot walking down the street, in the dark, and a street light going out. Then we see a woman running, wearing just a shirt and underwear. We see she is being chased by an off-road vehicle. Then men get out of the car, grabbing a rifle. The woman finds other women also running, one gets shot. The girl continues to flee, but finally comes to a stop. A man finds her and shoots her. It turns out to just be a paintball round it seems, but then suddenly the woman falls through the ground.
QM&P comes out to investigate the next weekend, and they find the woman is dead. Tulip is at the site as well. Odin gives a talk to the people, telling the “boys” to stop rough-housing, and ladies need to “watch where they’re walking”. Tulip seems annoyed by this chat.
Meanwhile, we get what seems to be a flashback, of Jesse getting the church prepared for service–putting bibles on the pews, getting the wine ready and handing out leaflets. Jesse’s father then heads to the altar, and gives his sermon. Moving to the present, Jesse is at the church, but Cassidy has come by to tell him about the two men who are after Jesse. Jesse seems preoccupied, and doesn’t heed Cassidy’s warning. Cassidy tries to tell Jesse to get out of the area, but Jesse doesn’t want to go anywhere.
Jesse pays a visit to Emily, and he is curious about church attendance. Jesse wants to figure out how to get the church filled. Emily seems curious about Jesse’s attitude, tells Jesse she is worried about him. Jesse decides to have a raffle at the church for a big screen TV, and Emily decides she will pick it up after some coaxing by Jesse.
In another flashback, we see Jesse being punished by his father with a belt.
Cassidy, meanwhile, meets with the two guys hunting down Jesse. He decides to spin the chat into saying that Jesse is considering coming in, and Cassidy acts as though he is still playing the middle man. Cassidy then gets down to brass tacks, and asks what the payment will be. The two men give some cash to Cassidy and Cassidy says he will take it. The two ask when Jesse will be brought to them, and Cassidy says, “very soon”. The two decide they don’t trust Cassidy. One of them wants to tell “them” what is going on, presumably the other angels…? The second one says they can’t tell or they could get in trouble.
Cassidy has some fun with the cash he got, getting drugs and a woman of some sort to entertain him.
Moving to Odin, he is playing Q-Bert, and he is asked about a safety concern by the mayor. The two then talk about a sustainability company, and the mayor asks for Odin to partner with the company. The conversation doesn’t go well as Odin decides to urinate on the flyers he was given by the mayor.
Back to the “angels”, one is “hungry” and goes to grab a burger. The front desk unfortunately does not have a burger, at least the one the “angel” saw on the TV in his hotel room. He heads to a vending machine and grabs some food.
Meanwhile, apparently the mayor was watching Emily’s kids, and Emily tells him that they will never be together. But she opts to have some bedtime fun with the man.
Meanwhile at the brothel, the women mourn the death of Lacey, the girl who died at the beginning of the episode. Tulip gets frustrated, because the men were chasing her down and thinks the women were being dumb. The men start getting annoyed and the boss decides to call things off, giving the men some free-time with the ladies.
Tulip then goes upstairs and attacks a man who is having a good time with one of the women, pushing him out the window. She winds up hurting this guy in the neck. Then she realizes it is not the man she thought it was–it is Cassidy. Tulip then tries to get Cassidy to the hospital as he bleeds out. She apologizes to him, and he asks her for a kiss.
At the hospital, she tries to get help, but then discovers that Cassidy has vanished. She looks for him, eventually finding him in the blood bank having a snack. He tells her it looks like he will make it.
Jesse, meanwhile, meets up with Odin, asking him to come down to the church. Odin seems against it, completely. He begrudgingly agrees after Jesse offers him a deal–offering his father’s land if Odin doesn’t feel different about church after the services tomorrow.
So Odin does come to church, and it seems pretty full. Jesse gives his sermon, and then talks directly to Odin. Odin is not happy to be there. Jesse then asks if Odin feels changed. Odin says no at first, and begins to leave, happy about winning the wager. But Jesse decides to use his powers, and convince Odin to serve God. He agrees.
The “angels” meanwhile get a phone call in their hotel room. It turns out their little box thing is ringing. The two “angels” look nervously at it.
His Thoughts on Preacher, Season 1 Episode 4: Monster Swamp
I am still deciding how I feel about this show. It is entertaining I guess, but the characters are all weird! Who are these mystery people that are dealing with Cassidy? Are they really angels? People who read the comic book probably already know the answer to this, but I haven’t, so they are really confusing me.
I am also wondering about this mystery sinkhole. Is it supposed to be more than a sinkhole? Or is it just showing us how Odin and his company are not caring about the environment? The title of the episode, Monster Swamp, makes it seem like there is more to it, but we don’t really see anything to make it seem supernatural in anyway.
I am curious to know how Tulip feels about this Cassidy guy. So far it doesn’t seem like Jesse really believes Cassidy is a vampire (that or he is just really cool with it), so I am wondering if Tulip will have a different perspective given she witnessed him chowing down on some blood first hand.
It looks like Jesse might have a full church going forward now. This Odin guy seems to be the trick to bring the masses in. I am curious to see how Odin will be serving God though. We have seen how other actions Jesse has taken with his newfound power, and how they didn’t work out quite right.
