After attending The Purge: From Film to Television panel on Saturday, July 21 at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, it was about 6:15pm. We had heard there was some sort of Overwatch related activity over at Future Tech Live, and Josh and Carlos are both big Overwatch fans, so we decided to head over there and check it out.
Future Tech Live was located on the second floor at the Omni Hotel, and was scheduled to close at 7:00pm. So by the time we got over there, it was about 6:30pm and close to closing time. Upon going up the escalator, there was a sign directing attendees to Future Tech Live, and staff members checking to make sure you had a SDCC badge before entering.
The Overwatch attraction was the first thing you saw upon entering the relatively small ballroom area, where several technology related booths were set up. Being that it was close to closing time, some of these booths were abandoned. But many of them were still up and running, and featured AR and VR demos, including a Star Wars: Jedi Challenges demo with lightsabers. There was even a booth where you could buy Bitcoin.
When Josh and Carlos saw that the Overwatch Payload Tour was merely a green screen photo op, they were no longer interested. They thought it would be a VR Overwatch demo. But then when I decided to do the photo op with or without them, since there was essentially no line, they decided to join me.
There was one group that went before us, but by the time we signed our waivers, it was our turn anyway. A staff member told us that the more we get into it, the better it would turn out. So we each selected our Overwatch weapons and stepped up on the rotating platform. I assumed there were people shooting at us, based on the comment that the staff member had made, so I used my guns to act like I was shooting back. As you can see, it turned out there was no one shooting at us! Oh well.
After we completed the photo op, we were each given an Overwatch pin and decal sheet. Then we were able to go to the tablets set up off to the side and send the above photo op to ourselves via text and/or email.
The rest of our Saturday night was pretty mellow. We met up with some friends for dinner, then Josh and I went back to our hotel to relax. Meanwhile, Carlos and our friends went to Zachary Levi’s impromptu NerdHQ dance party.
The only panel we planned on attending on Sunday was the Supernatural panel, which was the first panel scheduled in Hall H that morning, at 10:30am. Click here to continue to our recap and photos of the Supernatural panel at SDCC 2018!
We also tried coming back to Future Tech Live on Sunday afternoon, because Josh was disappointed with his performance in the Overwatch photo op and wanted a re-do. We also noticed a sign upon entering the Omni that there was a different background each day, so that would have been cool to have a second photo in a different setting. However, when we entered Future Tech Live, the line was much longer than the day before, so we decided not to worry about it.
