So, no surprise this weekend. Finding Dory easily took the box office this week. Making over $135 million in the US put it as the highest earning animated film for an opening weekend. Well deserved too, as the movie was done really well. This movie pumped up George quite a bit. This is good news for him, as he paid a hefty price for the movie, at $50 of his total $100. He still has a long way to go to catch Violet, however. The other movie released this weekend was Central Intelligence. It fared well at the box office as well, making $35 million. Tamara saw her second movie in the draft finally come out. Unfortunately, the cost of the movie was $15 for her, so it might not have the payoff she had hoped for.
Speaking of not paying a good price for movies, both Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 saw a significant dropoff in their second weekend, which unfortunately puts another nail in the coffin for the Summer Fantasy Movie Draft for me. My movie team unfortunately fared pretty badly, as I peter on to my final movie soon.
I have quite a few movies still in the top 10 at the box office for the weekend, but there are significant dropoffs as you go down the list. Here are the top 10 movies for the weekend:
- Finding Dory – $135,060,273
- Central Intelligence – $35,535,250
- The Conjuring – $14,880,050
- Now You See Me 2 – $9,373,379
- Warcraft – $7,241,430
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $5,309,290
- TMNT: Out of the Shadows – $5,251,531
- Alice Through the Looking Glass – $4,290,760
- Me Before You – $3,911,175
- Captain America: Civil War – $2,331,622
Congratulations to this week’s points-earners for the Fantasy Movie Draft Contest we are holding! Tim, Matthew D, William Landefeld, Austin Baroudi, Francine Anchondo, and Daisy all earned their three points for the week! Unfortunately, Finding Dory outperformed expectations for our guessers, so no 5 bonus points will be awarded this week.
If you don’t know about the contest yet, check out this link to figure out how to join in! Remember, guesses are based on US box office numbers. Don’t forget to read the rules for entry in that post!
Looking to Movies Coming Out This Weekend
Speaking of the Summer Movie Draft Contest, be sure to get your guesses in for next week! We have three new movies coming out, and it could make for an interesting weekend! Free State of Jones, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The Shallows all come out this weekend! Given Finding Dory‘s big opening weekend, it has a shot at taking the number one spot for week two! My money would be on Independence Day: Resurgence though. I will even join in this week on an estimate, and make a guess at $75 million!
So what do you guys think? Make your guesses for this weekend’s #1 movie in the comments below, and how much it will make, so you can get your entries in!
