Episode Recap of The Flash, Season 2 Episode 14: Escape From Earth-2
Cisco and Earth-2 Wells—Meeting Up with Earth-2 Barry, Iris and Killer Frost
This episode of The Flash continues the story in Earth-2 for Barry, Wells, and Cisco, along with their Earth-2 companions of Iris, Earth-2 Barry, and eventually Killer Frost. The episode begins with Wells and Cisco trying to figure out their next move. Wells is panicking trying to figure out a “back up” plan in case Zoom is able to find them, while Cisco wants to attempt to re-engineer Reaver’s glasses to help locate Zoom’s lair. Then the two realize they still have Barry from Earth-2 locked in the lab. Cisco and Wells release him, and tell him to get lost. But as this is going down, an alarm sounds in STAR Labs, and Wells realizes Zoom is near. Wells hurriedly takes the other two to his time vault, which hides them from Zoom—for now. After the coast is clear, they leave STAR Labs to avoid capture.
They head to the CCPD in Earth-2, and talk with Iris. Iris learns the truth–that Barry from last night wasn’t the Earth-2 Barry, and (Earth-2) Iris is now in the loop as to what is going on. Cisco and Wells ask for help locating Zoom, but her best solution is finding a Meta-Human who has worked with him. This leads to the conclusion of trying to locate Killer Frost—which (Earth-2) Barry is able to do fairly easily. (Earth-2) Iris decides she is going to assist to avenge (Earth-2) Joe, and (Earth-2) Barry opts to go as well.
The new team makes its way to the “Woodlands” searching for Killer Frost. They find her, and make their case to get revenge on Zoom, but Killer Frost seems too concerned about dying at the hands of Zoom, and puts up a fight. The team is able to get the jump on her though, and “convinces” her to lead them to Zoom’s hideout.
The team makes the journey to Zoom’s lair, which is in some rocky cliffs that are basically inaccessible to normal people. Killer Frost has a solution though—she creates an “ice ladder” for the team to climb. But before we see what is in Zoom’s Lair…let’s check on Barry and see what he has been up to.
Barry
Barry is being held in Zoom’s lair, and is unable to escape it. Also there is Jesse. She tells Barry it is impossible to escape this room. But Barry keeps hope, and tells Jesse that her father is working hard to save her, and not to give up on him. Meanwhile, the masked man that has been imprisoned with Jesse in another cell has been incessantly knocking on his cell, which is irritating Jesse. Barry, on the other hand, thinks that this might be some sort of code. Zoom pops in though, providing some terror, and tells them to basically behave.
Continuing to try to figure out what these knocks are, Jesse makes the observation that they never go beyond 5 consecutive knocks. This then enlightenments Barry—he realizes it is a code used by POWs. After some work, Barry and Jesse realize the word he is spelling out, but are puzzled by it: Jay. Barry tells this masked man that he is working with that Jay is on his Earth, which seems to agitate this masked man. Unfortunately they are not able to converse for long though, as Zoom shows up and warns Jesse and Barry to not talk to him anymore, and makes an example out of Barry by pummeling him.
Barry seems to be ok, and now has an idea to make his escape—phase through the glass. Unfortunately it doesn’t work for him, and Jesse concludes it must be because this Earth vibrates at a different frequency than Earth 1. It seems to be pretty hopeless…
Then the team shows up, and Wells frees Jesse. After a few attempts by the team to free Barry, Barry tells the team to leave so they aren’t caught by Zoom. But (Earth-2) Barry refuses to leave, and tells Barry to keep trying, and he will be able to do it. Finally Barry is able to phase through. Barry wants to free the masked man, but unfortunately Zoom has shown up. He thanks Killer Frost for luring the team here, and he decides it is time to kill Jesse in front of Dr. Wells.
This actually upsets Killer Frost though, and she turns on Zoom, hitting him with her freeze powers. She tells the rest of the group to flee, but Barry still doesn’t want to leave the masked man. Barry tells him that he will come back for him. (Earth-2) Barry and Iris decide to stay with some family, outside of Central City to avoid Zoom. The rest of the team makes their way to the breach to head back to Earth 1, but it was unstable from events on Earth 1…let’s review what happened in Earth 1 while all this craziness happened in Earth-2.
Iris, Caitlin, Joe and Jay Garrick
Back on Earth 1, the Geomancer is still causing trouble, and seems to want to challenge this new Flash. Caitlin, meanwhile, is working on her new Velocity drug to try to minimize the side effects so Jay isn’t worsened by it. She comes up with Velocity 8, but that still seems to have some trouble, so she again works on reformulating, and comes up with Velocity 9. Just as she gets Velocity 9 finished, the Geomancer is causing more trouble, collapsing a building. Without having any test runs with the new drug, Jay Garrick takes it and heads out to save the people in the building. When he gets back to STAR Labs, he falls over, but he says he is ok, just exhausted.
Meanwhile, Iris is getting in some trouble at work for not writing articles that are basically bashing the mysteriously missing Flash. She comes up with a solution though—interview Jay Garrick for her paper. This seems to appease her boss, so she heads to ask Jay about it. At STAR Labs, he says he will think about it.
The Geomancer is still looking for trouble though, and walks into STAR Labs, apparently not having any trouble with the security there. Caitlin calls for Jay, who is not responding. Caitlin tries to flee, and then Iris is attacked. Luckily, Caitlin is able to grab a weapon and disable Geomancer.
Unfortunately, the trouble caused by the Geomancer has further damaged the speed cannon, and the team on Earth-2 won’t be able to make the jump to Earth 1. Jay Garrick takes some more Velocity 9, and with the help of Joe, is able to get the breach stabilized.
Reconvening
So all of this culminates in Barry, Wells, Jesse, and Cisco returning back through the breach. Just as they do, Jay Garrick throws one of the breach bomb things into the breach to close it. Unfortunately, Jay made the mistake of standing too close to the breach and Zoom shoves his arm through Jay’s chest, and pulls him through the breach as it closes. Caitlin screams out in horror as the rest stare in disbelief…what happens next?!
Josh’s Thoughts: The Flash, Season 2 Episode 14: Escape From Earth-2
This masked man imprisoned by Zoom has me very intrigued. Who is he? My current theory is that he is Jay. Given how violently he reacted to Barry talking about Jay being on Earth 1, it makes me think he is frustrated because an imposter is impersonating him. When looking at the back of the masked man’s head, it sort of looks like it could be a blond-ish hair cut as well, which would match that of the Jay Garrick we have seen so far. If my theory is true though, why does this “clone” Garrick exist?
That is a tough question to answer. But the reason for this (potentially) false Jay Garrick’s degeneration could be the fact that he is a clone, and not because he lost the Speed Force. I am not sure why the Velocity 9 would help him survive though, so things are a little muddled still. What would be weird is if this Jay turned out to be a spy—he seems too honest and upstanding to be a spy. Perhaps he is “soaking” in information unwittingly, and the reason Zoom pulled him back through the breach was to retrieve this information? I have to say, I am really confused now, but have to think that this man being held is the real Jay Garrick, otherwise I can’t understand why he would be signaling that name, and be frustrated when he hears what other-Jay is doing.
The other thing that is nagging at me is—what is the plan moving forward? The last breach is now closed, so can the team go back to Earth-2? How can Barry even save this masked man or stop Zoom if they can’t get back to each other? I have to imagine that they are going to have to try to re-open the breach, in order to stop Zoom.
This was a pretty good episode though, and I think a lot of that is due to the menacing nature of Zoom. He is quite a scary character, and has certainly been a force that Barry has not managed to deal with yet. I just don’t know what the next step is for the show.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 2 Episode 14 of The Flash: Escape From Earth-2
This was a pretty fun wrap-up to the two episode Earth-2 trip. Too bad we couldn’t stay there longer. I like how we were kept apprised of what was happening back in Earth-1, and that there were actually significant things happening while Barry and the others were gone. It was pretty cool how the others could step up and fend for themselves when they had to. But what was up with Geomancer just strolling into STAR Labs? Didn’t they make a big point at the top of the season how they had beefed up security so that people (namely villains) couldn’t do this anymore? But I guess if you’re a bad guy, and especially a meta-human, you’ll find a way in somehow…
I have to admit that Barry-2 was a little annoying, and though amusing, his personality seemed just a bit over-the-top. Meanwhile, Iris-2 seemed to have the same personality as Iris-1, and it seems a little odd that she would be interested in someone like Barry-2. Ah well. It was also a bit too convenient at the end that although Barry had the right idea of phasing through, and couldn’t do it, he miraculously was able to — and just in time — once he got a pep talk from Barry-2. It would have been more plausible had they come up with some sort of scientific solution to the differing frequencies, or something along those lines.
That brings us to this mystery man who got left behind. Who is he? Another Jay Garrick, as in, a Jay from yet another Earth? Or maybe he is the “real” Jay from Earth-2? We’ve never actually seen Jay use his powers without the help of the various iterations of the Velocity serum. Maybe he was just pretending to have had powers, and knew about Velocity, which he tricked Caitlin into making for him so that he could experience meta-human powers? I’m still wondering where he goes all these times when he has disappeared, or just not been around. Like what happened this episode, when Caitlin called for Jay’s help, but he was nowhere to be found, and she had to take care of things herself. Was he really that exhausted and didn’t wake up, or was he up to something else? It was also a bit weird how he was standing so close to the breach as it was closing. I kept thinking he was just going to get sucked in from standing so close, and didn’t actually see it coming that Zoom would grab him. Is there some reason that he would want to get sucked back through the breach, especially considering that it was the last breach and was about to close? I don’t know, but I am a little suspicious of him…
