Recap of The Flash, Season 3 Episode 6: Shade
In this episode of The Flash, Alchemy gets a hold on Wally, with Wally having dreams of being a hero. Wally tells this to his father, who in turn tells Barry. Barry then realizes that he has to tell Wally and the rest of the group about Flashpoint. Wally doesn’t take the news well, not believing what happened to the other victims of Alchemy will happen to him.
We also have a villain this episode—The Shade—wreaking havoc on Central City. We see him murder a man as a black cloudy mass.
Another thing we see is CaitlIn asking Cisco to vibe her to see if she turns into Killer Frost. She had previously stolen some power-dampening cuffs that she decided to wear to mitigate her powers. The vision he sees is the two of them fighting each other with their super powers, so Cisco concludes they must turn evil. However, he keeps that quiet, and tells Caitlin that she is fine.
Wally’s visions continue to be a problem though, and they are actually hurting Wally now. Meeting with Team Flash, H.R. suggests putting Wally in the pipeline to protect him. Wally agrees, thinking it is the best solution at the moment. For some odd reason, the group decides that Joe should still go on his date he has. Also deciding to attend the date is Cisco—who seemed to be trying to avoid Caitlin, but Caitlin decides she wants to go on the date as well.
At the “movie in the park”, Caitlin sees Cisco acting weird and asks him what is going on, and Cisco comes clean about the vibe he had. Caitlin is shaken to hear this, and leaves the movie. H.R. had also shown up to the movie though, and Joe is clearly irritated about how chatty he is with Joe’s date, Cecil. But this is soon interrupted when the Shade shows up and attacks the audience at the park.
Barry heads to the park to help out, leaving Iris alone with Wally in the pipeline at Star Labs. During the Flash’s fight with the Shade, Caitlin tosses her dampening cuffs to Barry, who takes down the Shade with them.
In the pipeline, Wally seemed to be mind controlled by Alchemy, and Iris had opened his containment cell. But Wally tries to make a break for it, and Iris knocks him out. Then, during some discussion about Wally, Cisco forces Caitlin to come clean about her new abilities, which angers Caitlin. Barry tries to console her, but Caitlin isn’t really having it, given this is his fault to begin with in a way.
Wally is attacked mentally again by Alchemy, so after some deliberation, the team decides that Wally should be used as bait to find Alchemy. Joe gets some police back up, and both Joe and Barry notice that Julian has not shown up, which they find odd.
But Wally comes to Alchemy, who offers to give Wally his powers. But Barry and the cops head into the room, and Alchemy attacks the Flash. Then a blue streak enters the room, which Flash gives chase after. Wally then picks up Alchemy’s philosopher’s stone, and is enclosed in a cocoon. Meanwhile, the Flash has come face to face with a new speedster, Savitar, who is the god of speed. Flash is at the mercy of Savitar at the episode’s end…
His Thoughts on The Flash, Season 3 Episode 6: Shade
I think The Flash has been really pushing for Julian to be Alchemy, but I feel like this is too obvious. Besides, Julian hates meta-humans so why would be consistently be trying to make more? I am not really buying that idea at all. In fact, if it becomes true, then I will be pretty irritated, as it really doesn’t fit with Julian as a character.
As for this episode, the “villain of the week” was kind of boring, but it seemed this episode was more about Wally and introducing this new character Savitar. I am curious to learn more about him—is he another character brought about because of Flashpoint? Or was he someone who has always been around, but just now has made his presence known?
Caitlin, meanwhile, looks like she has a future coming to a head with Cisco according to his vibe, but I am not ready to say that the vision they had was them actually as enemies. Perhaps they are still allies and training together? Maybe Cisco turns bad? That was such a quick snapshot o what is going on, that there are many ways that could be taken.
But we will have to see what happens to Wally. Will he come out as Kid Flash? I am guessing so, as this looks like how the others have regained their alter-dimensional abilities. I am guessing he is going to be assistance for Flash to escape from Savitar as well, so we will have to see how that goes.
Her Thoughts on The Flash, Season 3 Episode 6: Shade
I was a little unsure what was going to happen to Wally when Alchemy gave him his powers from Flashpoint, considering that Wally was a superhero, Kid Flash, while the other metahumans that Alchemy has been restoring powers to have seemed to all be evil. So why would Alchemy want to help Wally out if he was good? The only explanation that kind of presented itself was when it was suggested that Alchemy was possessing Wally. But that’s still odd, because it didn’t seem like he was possessing anyone before. Then again, since they were evil, he never had to before. This again brings up my frustration about how every metahuman that pops up is always evil, unless they’re friends with Barry.
Then there’s the question of who is Alchemy? Especially this episode, the show seems to be trying to hint that it’s Julian, but I think that would be too obvious. Julian mysteriously didn’t show up, but it could be for any number of reasons. Remember, he was supposed to be spending time with his girlfriend? On top of that, Julian’s speech last episode about how disliking how metahumans always use their powers to do bad things makes it so that him being Alchemy doesn’t make sense. Plus, Alchemy has an American accent, not a British accent. I don’t think that he would consider randomly changing his accent.
That brings us to Killer Frost. But I don’t think that Cisco vibed the whole picture. What he saw was only a glimpse. He didn’t get the full story of what exactly was going on in the vibe. So it’s unclear what will really happen in the future.
