Episode Recap of The Last Ship, Season 1 Episode 10: No Place Like Home
On land, it seems like Chandler’s wife is getting sicker and sicker, and appears that his father has caught the virus as well.
Back on the U.S.S. Nathan James, the vaccine is administered to all of the crew members. Dr. Scott personally administers it to Chandler.
Slattery announces to the crew that they have had no success contacting Fort Dietrich where Dr. Scott wants to mass produce the cure, and warns them there may not be any survivors. Jeter tells them that they will be passing by home, Norfolk, on the way there.
The Communications team continues to try to contact Fort Dietrich. They then view some overhead images of the area. It appears there was a mass evacuation, and they see a large red “X.” Looking closer, they see that the lab has been destroyed, and wonder who would have done that.
Meanwhile, Chandler’s family tries to get to Olympia. But they drive up to a roadblock, where some people tell them Olympia can’t help them, and to turn around. It looks like Chandler’s father is going to turn around, but then he floors it and drives right through the roadblock.
The Nathan James hears a message directed to them from Baltimore, and head there. Chandler’s family hears the message as well, which gives them hope.
Dr. Scott talks to Ava while her parents, Quincy and Kelly, argue.
Chandler speaks via video chat to Amy Granderson, Vice-Chair of the President’s Defense Policy Board, who had her daughter transferred to the Nathan James when she heard about its mission. Amy informs Chandler that the President’s bunker has gone silent, and that she has been working to create safe zones. Chandler tells her that they can be in Baltimore within a few hours, then allows Alicia Granderson to talk to her mother.
The guys that had set up the roadblock intercept the message between Chandler and Granderson, and seem to be planning something upon their arrival at Baltimore Harbor.
The Nathan James docks at Baltimore Harbor after armed guards are first sent ashore. A couple of black SUVs show up, and a police lieutenant gets out and greets them. Meanwhile, the roadblock guys watch from a nearby window with a sniper rifle. Chandler, Dr. Scott, Tex, and some others go ashore. A third SUV pulls up, and Granderson gets out and greets her daughter. The roadblock guys are surprised to see her, and prepare to take the shot. However, they aren’t able to get a clear shot before she gets back in the SUV and the caravan of SUVs drives off. Apparently, the roadblock guys have some people “on the inside” and plan to find out what the Nathan James crew is doing there.
Mrs. Granderson shows Chandler, Dr. Scott, and some others around the building which they have taken over. She is pleased to learn that they have the cure. Back on the ship, Slattery learns that there is a group of warlords led by Thorwald, a former Maryland police officer, and they’re the ones who destroyed the lab at Fort Dietrich. Slattery asks the police lieutenant about Deer Park, where his wife had said she was taking the family, and he says there was some fighting, but there are survivors, and that he can take him there.
Mrs. Granderson takes Dr. Scott by their lab, and the scientists there applaud her for creating the cure. Meanwhile, the warlords hear about the cure, and plan to take Granderson’s lab.
Crew members inform Chandler that they can’t get a signal to the Nathan James because the warlords are jamming the signals. Chandler goes to the radio room and tries in vain to reach his father.
Tex stops by the lab to let Dr. Scott know that he’s moving on, alone. He kisses her before he goes.
Suddenly, Chandler gets in touch with his father, who tells him they’re sick and are in Baltimore, heading to Olympia. He finds out the name of the truck stop where they are, and he heads out in an SUV with a few others. When they arrive, his family is gone, and he finds out from a man there that they went to Olympia. Chandler tells the others that’s where they’re heading then, but Granderson’s soldiers tell him they can’t go there, because Olympia is off limits – it’s for sick people. Chandler still insists on going, so Granderson’s soldiers pull their guns on the others, and gunfire is exchanged. Granderson’s soldiers drive off, and Chandler sends Danny and an injured Jeter in the other SUV to the Nathan James to tell them what happened, that they’re getting out of Baltimore, and to try to get the others back to the ship.
Back with Mrs. Granderson, she asks her daughter what kind of man Captain Chandler is, trying to find out if he’ll still follow orders. Alicia wonders what is going on.
At the lab, Dr. Scott questions the data about the treatments they’ve developed, saying that it’s highly toxic.
Chandler and Burk arrive at Olympia, an arena, where many people are also arriving, and are in masks. He finds his family on the floor of the arena, and gives them the cure. However, his wife has already died.
On the Nathan James the police lieutenant shoots a crew member and demands the cure from Slattery, and orders him to drop anchor. Quincy charges at him, and gets shot.
Dr. Scott confronts Mrs. Granderson about the treatments that they’ve been giving to the sick. Mrs. Granderson explains about the chaos and savagery that they’ve seen, and that it is her duty to help the “right” people first, to ensure the future of society. While she talks, we see that Thorwald seems to have an underground society of happy, healthy people.
Chandler takes a look around Olympia and realizes that the people there are killing the sick. They go outside and see truckloads of bodies being brought to be burned to power the city. Chandler tries to reach the ship. Back on the ship, the crew members go out on deck, and we see lights approaching.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 1 Episode 10 of The Last Ship: No Place Like Home
Well, that was an interesting twist. The people that you think are the bad guys actually turn out to be the good guys, and the people that appear to be the good guys turn out to be the bad guys. Funny how Mrs. Granderson asked if Chandler had let the power go to his head, when it was she who was the one who in fact that had let it go to her head. She’s playing God, deciding who gets to live and who doesn’t. But now that Chandler and the crew of the Nathan James knows what’s going on, they’re not going to let her have the cure to herself that easily. I’m just not sure how hard it will be to fight back against her, and how far her influence goes, and how much manpower she actually has versus that which the crew of the Nathan James has. I also feel bad for Alicia, because she has now had the rare opportunity to reunite with her mother, but then to find out what her mother has done, and wants to continue to do, that has to be devastating.
So what is going to happen in the second season now? Will this problem with Mrs. Granderson be resolved fairly quickly? Will the ship set out to sea again? Or are we going to be on land for awhile now? It seems like Chandler wants to get back to the ship so they can head out somewhere else – but where? In any case, I am still on board to see what happens next in Season 2!
