The Kingdom
King Ezekiel, Morgan, Richard, Benjamin, and a couple others meet with the Saviors to give them their supplies. One of the Saviors, Jared, wants to take Richard’s gun, and the two pull guns on each other. However, Ezekiel commands Richard to hand Jared his weapon. Jared then is about to hit Richard with the gun, but Morgan hits Jared’s hand with his stick. Fighting is about to break out, but then Benjamin uses his own stick to land Jared on his back. The Saviors warn Ezekiel against any future similar behavior, threatening Richard’s life, and leave.
Later, Daryl confronts Morgan about what happened, criticizing him about letting the Saviors do this, saying Carol would want to face them down. Morgan agrees, but says that’s why Carol left. Daryl finds Richard practicing archery, and Richard asks him to help him, because they want the same thing, and Richard hands him a crossbow.
Daryl and Richard head outside of the Kingdom and retrieve some guns that Richard had hidden, and also make some molotov cocktails. The plan is to hide behind some trucks and attack the Saviors that drive down the road. Richard figures that the Saviors will retaliate and find Carol living nearby, which will get Ezekiel to finally decide to fight back. When Daryl learns about Carol, he refuses to help Richard. They hear Saviors about to drive past, and Richard gets his gun ready to attack them, but Daryl takes Richard down and fights him to prevent him from going forward with his plan. They end up drawing their weapons against each other. Daryl warns Richard that if anything happens to Carol, he’ll kill him.
Carol comes outside when she notices King Ezekiel and his people clearing walkers nearby. They give her some cobbler. After they leave, Daryl pays Carol a visit. She tearfully hugs him. Daryl asks why she left. She says she had to.
Carol explains her thought process to Daryl, saying that she couldn’t lose anyone, and she knew she would kill — but then there wouldn’t be anything left of her. Daryl confirms that the Saviors came, and she asks if everyone’s okay. He tells her they made a deal, and everyone’s alright. They share a meal, then Daryl heads back to the Kingdom, after sharing a hug with Carol.
Daryl visits Ezekiel’s pet tiger in her cage. Morgan finds him there, and Daryl reveals that he found Carol. Daryl tells Morgan that they need the Kingdom, and that Morgan needs to make that happen. However, Morgan says that it can’t be him. Morgan also figures out that Daryl didn’t tell Carol what happened, or else she would be there. Daryl heads back to Hilltop in the morning to get them ready.
Rick’s New Friends
The new group of people that Rick, Michonne, Tara, Aaron, and Rosita met at the end of last episode surround them in a circle. The group’s leader says that they own their lives now and asks if they want to buy them back. Rick says he wants to see Gabriel first. They bring Gabriel out, and say that they took the supplies from the boat. Rick says then they must know that they have nothing with which to buy back their lives. He also tells the leader that the Saviors are the ones who own their lives, and the Saviors will come looking if they kill them. Rick says that the only way out is if the group joins in fighting the Saviors. But the leader says no.
Fighting breaks out, but Gabriel sneaks up and takes a knife from one of the group members, holding a knife to her neck, which stops the fighting. Gabriel again makes a pitch about joining them to fight the Saviors. The leader seems to consider it, and tells her people to show Rick “Up up up.” Rick and the leader go to the top of the trash heap and he sees how far the landfill stretches. Then she pushes him off to see if he’s worth it.
He seems to land in a pit, and the others can’t get to him. Michonne can see him through a large tube. A walker wearing spikes attacks him, and when he puts his hand up to block, a spike goes through his hand. Michonne shouts to Rick to use the wall, and he pulls down trash that falls on top of the walker. He is then able to grab a weapon and kill the walker. Rick shouts up to the leader to tell them what they want, and they’ll get it. She throws a rope down to him, and he climbs out. The leader tells Rick they want a lot of guns, then they’ll fight his fight.
Rick and the leader negotiate terms and come to an agreement. Her group will get 1/3, plus the guns and half the jars. She also reveals that they were waiting for someone to get the supplies at the boat — because they take, they don’t bother. She tells Rick to go, the deal expires soon. Rick asks her name, and she tells him it’s Jadis. Rick goes back to his group and is happy to report that they have a deal.
Gabriel explains to Rick what happened to him — that one of the group members jumped him in the pantry, and made him pack up the supplies from the boat and leave. Gabriel asks Rick what made him smile. Rick says that someone showed him that enemies can become friends. Rosita thinks that they should stay out and look for the guns rather than go back to Alexandria, but Tara says they should stick together and follow Rick’s plan of bringing back supplies and regrouping. They pack up and head back to Alexandria, with the group telling them to bring guns soon, or else.
Her Thoughts on The Walking Dead, Season 7 Episode 10: New Best Friends
Definitely starting to see some forward progress on this episode, in terms of gearing up to face Negan, yet at the same time also seeing some backward or no progress. I like that we’re continuing to focus on more than one storyline, because I feel like that drives the overall storyline forward.
We saw some significant character development in Gabriel, which although we know he has come a long way, was still surprising to me. He pretty much saved the day when he held the knife to the group member’s neck. We can see that he has gained Rick’s respect. As for Rick, he was able to prove himself to this new group, and I liked that Michonne was able to help him out verbally even though she couldn’t get to him. It feels like the show keeps teasing Rick losing his hand, like he’s supposed to in the comics. Not sure that he ever actually will on the show though. I also liked that we got to see some affection between Rick and Michonne this episode, because I feel like that has been lacking a bit lately.
When are we going to get the real Carol back, if at all? At this point, everyone is treating her very fragilely, not giving her all the information. But she’s bound to find out eventually, right? Then this will spur her into action. But then she’ll “lose herself” or whatever. However, it’s going to get to the point where this is necessary. Actually, it is already necessary. It’s only a matter of time before Ezekiel joins the cause, along with Carol. Unless Carol does get killed off after all, and everything goes according to Richard’s plan to get Ezekiel to fight. I don’t want to see Carol go out weakly though. I think she would fight back fiercely if in self defense, but I’d rather see her rejoin the group and fight.
It looks like next episode we’ll see what’s going on in Negan’s neck of the woods, and how Eugene’s holding up. Not well, I would think.
