Episode Recap of Under the Dome, Season 2 Episode 12: Turn
As the dome contracts, Rebecca tells the teens to gather everyone to the center of town.
As Barbie helps Julia pack up some things at her house, the dome begins to close in, and they have to run out the back. They go to the school, where Julia and Rebecca argue, since Julia thinks that the dome wants to protect them, and wouldn’t close in on them. Just then Hunter comes in with the teens and confesses to Barbie that he was working for his dad, which causes Barbie to attack him. The teens stick up for Hunter, but he orders them to go help out.
Norrie talks to Ben, who thinks they’ll all be dead soon. Joe comes to get Norrie and they go follow Barbie, who is taking Hunter away from the school. Meanwhile, Big Jim tells Pauline that they should go check out her old paintings to see if they can find any clues about what’s to come.
Barbie takes Hunter to the edge of the dome where a soldier is, holds a gun to Hunter’s head, and demands that he get Don Barbara, his father, to the dome NOW.
Pauline tells Junior that she had a vision of Melanie in a crater, but her visions stopped. Junior blames his father for what happened to Melanie. Back at the school, Julia and Rebecca argue more. Melanie wakes up coughing up blood, and her hair is falling out. Julia thinks that something is happening to the egg, and is killing her. Rebecca checks out Melanie’s blood, and her red blood cells appear to be disintegrating. Sam thinks a transfusion might buy Melanie some time, but they have no way of knowing her blood type. However, Rebecca comes up with some idea of using lima beans to determine Melanie’s blood type, so she and Sam go to Andrea’s house to look for lima beans. Over at Andrea’s house, Sam tells Rebecca the story behind Melanie.
Junior comes in and retrieves his mom’s journal from Julia. Lyle sees Junior looking at the journal and comes over and offers to help. Junior hands the journal to Lyle and tells him to find something that might help Melanie.
Back at Pauline’s studio, she and Jim aren’t having any luck finding any relevant paintings.
Rebecca turns out to be the same blood type as Melanie, so she begins transfusing her blood to Melanie.
Barbie’s dad shows up at the dome. Barbie communicates with his father by Hunter writing messages to him, and the soldier typing messages on a laptop. Barbie calls Joe and Norrie out fromt heir hiding spot, and has Joe show video of Melanie. Barbie’s dad sends the soldier away, and agrees to send the egg through the door where Barbie crossed. Just then, the dome stops contracting.
They go back to the school, where Melanie is much better, but Rebecca quietly stresses to Barbie that the transfusion only buys them some time.
Joe finds a gun that he wants to bring tot he lake use as protection against Don Barbara, but Norrie convinces him to put it back.
In Zenith, Don Barbara picks up the egg without it harming him. However, the soldiers turn their guns on him. Meanwhile, under the dome, Melanie takes a turn for the worse.
Julia goes to the edge of the dome and asks it to help Melanie. She also tells it that if someone has to die, let it be her, and asks it not to take anyone else’s lives. But in response, the dome begins to contract faster.
Pauline gets a vision paints 2 new pictures. She thinks one is of how to save Melanie, and that it will take 8 Hands to save her – 4 old and 4 new. But with Angie’s death, she’s not sure who the 4th new Hand is. Her other picture seems to be dripping blood.
The 4 old and 3 new Hands, along with Barbie, Julia Rebecca, Hunter, and Big Jim, bring Melanie to where they found the crater in the woods. All of the 7 Hands touch her, but she begins seizing. Rebecca figures out that the 8th Hand is Melanie herself, that she is both a Hand of the past and of the present. Junior and Sam take Melanie’s hand, and it seems to work. Melanie stands up and is just fine. But then she begins to sink into a swirling hole in the ground. They try to pull her to safety, but she falls into the deep hole.
Pauline feels bad for what she’s done, and says that she thought the painting meant that they were saving Melanie. Big Jim kisses her, but when he pulls away, there’s blood coming from Pauline’s mouth. It turns out Lyle had come up behind her and stabbed her because he wants the two of them to enter Heaven together. Big Jim attacks Lyle, and Lyle hands the knife to Jim, who plunges it into Lyle, killing him.
Violet’s Thoughts on Season 2 Episode 12 of Under the Dome: Turn
More bad acting and jumps to conclusions with little, if any, explanation, and that don’t make sense. That’s what pretty much sums up not only this episode, but pretty much every Under the Dome episode this season. Like Rebecca’s idea about using the lima beans as a way to figure out Melanie’s blood type — um, ok?? But it doesn’t even show her doing her little experiment, it just shows her and Sam foraging for lima beans, and voila, she all of a sudden is back at the school knowing Melanie’s blood type. Riiiight. Plus the fact that Rebecca even knew that she could do that to begin with, much less actually pull it off. In any case, isn’t there a universal blood donor, like O negative or something? Wouldn’t it have been more logical to try to find someone with that blood type first before jumping to lima beans?? And then Rebecca is the one who suddenly comes up with the solution about who the 8th Hand is. How does Rebecca always know everything??? It’s just really annoying.
I think the biggest takeaway from this episode is finding out that although the show made it seem like it before, Barbie’s dad is actually not the one in charge of things, and he takes orders from someone else. But who? And now Melanie has fallen into this deep crater. Where did she go? Is she still alive? I kind of feel like I don’t really care all that much to get the answers to these questions. But we’ve come this far, might as well watch the season finale. Which, by the way, it looks like Pauline is still alive? Thought she’d be dead for sure. Not to mention that the little fights and bouts of jealousy between Big Jim and Lyle seemed, I don’t know, awkward and forced, unwarranted almost.
Anyway, on to the season finale, where it looks like Big Jim goes on a crazy murderous rampage! We’ll see if the season finale can pull off something interesting to make us actually want to come back and watch Season 3, but I’m not holding my breath.
Josh’s Thoughts: Under the Dome, Season 2 Episode 12: Turn
I have to agree with Violet’s sentiment–the acting in this is pretty bad. I don;t think it is the actors fault though, I think that the story is written well enough to be something I can believe in. As I have said before, the show seems to enjoy coming up with random plot devices for the sake of having something to do in the dome. It is just really hard to get behind a show where the story seems to just go where it wants to, no matter how silly it seems.
As far as the deal between Barbie’s dad and Barbie, I am still trying to figure out what is going on there. At times, Barbie’s dad seems like he is the one in charge, and is pretending there is someone higher out there, other times he seems to be having to answer to someone else. I am still trying to decide what is going on there exactly.
Other than that, I am getting pretty bored with the show in general. I guess we wil see what happens with the season finale and go from there.
