Episode Recap of Under the Dome, Season 2 Episode 2: Infestation
The episode begins with the mystery girl running through the forest at night, and a butterfly lands on her hand. The next morning, Barbie and Julia are in bed together, and there are several monarch butterflies that come to the window. Meanwhile, Joe and Norrie wake up at Big Jim’s house and notice that Angie never came “home” last night. Big Jim fixes them some breakfast and tries to get some info out of them about the dome, when he is interrupted by a radio call. Rebecca finds several caterpillars on her plants, which are covered in eggs.
Big Jim finds Junior sleeping in a jail cell and asks him to open up the school and clean it up so that Rebecca can resume classes there. When he gets there, he finds Angie’s dead body, covered in butterflies.
Big Jim takes over at the diner when Angie doesn’t show, and Andrea inflates his ego. Rebecca stops by to let Big Jim know that the butterfly population has inflated dramatically, which has caused caterpillars to pop up and eat half of their crops already. Junior stops in to tell everyone that Angie is dead. Big Jim, Barbie, and Junior go over to the school to investigate. Big Jim asks for Barbie’s help finding the murderer. Phil finds a bloody footprint.
Joe and Norrie go for a walk in the woods and kiss. Then they notice several dead butterflies floating to the ground. Just then, they find the mystery girl laying on the ground nearby. She doesn’t know her name.
Big Jim asks Junior if he killed Angie, but Junior gets defensive and accuses Big Jim of doing it and trying to pin it on him.
Joe, Norrie, and the mystery girl walk by the school, and Barbie breaks the bad news to Joe.
Later, Barbie tells Julia that Phil found the mystery girl’s bloody footprint at the school. Barbie seems suspicious of the girl, but Julia defends her. Just then they see a fire, and Barbie goes to investigate. We see the source of the fire: Rebecca is burning the crops.
Joe tells Norrie that he wants to kill whoever is responsible for killing Angie. Norrie tells Joe that the cops found a girl’s shoe print at the scene of the crime.
The mystery girl confides in Julia that she was at the school and heard Angie scream. But she didn’t say anything because she was afraid “he” would come after her. She didn’t see a face, though, and she doesn’t know why she was at the school, saying that something “made” her go there.
Rebecca explains to Big Jim and Barbie that she burned the field to kill the infestation. Big Jim thinks the dome is testing him, and comes up with an idea.
Julia goes to Sam’s cabin and tells him about the girl and about Angie’s murder. Sam talks about his sister, Pauline, and how he wishes he could have helped her. He shows Julia his sister’s sketch of the girl, which his sister drew 20 years ago.
Big Jim’s idea is to take a cropduster plane up to distribute pesticide on the crops. Barbie tries to talk Big Jim into letting him do it because he has more experience, but Big Jim insists that the dome is specifically testing him.
Julia brings Sam to examine Angie’s body. Junior doesn’t want him to. Junior tells Sam about his vision of his mother, and regrets getting drunk and blacking out last night, because he wasn’t there for Angie. He doesn’t remember anything from last night, but says he would never hurt Angie. However, he thinks he father would.
Barbie has Rebecca distract Big Jim, while he takes off in the plane, and sprays the fields.
Norrie and Joe bring the girl’s shoe to Phil to see if it’s a match for the bloody shoe print. It does, and Phil picks her up and brings her to the station. Julia tries to stand up for the girl, and vows to get her out of jail. Meanwhile, Norrie and Joe tell Junior about the girl’s bloody shoe print.
Barbie is getting dangerously close to the perimeter and running out of fuel. But he says he’ll take his chances in the interest of being thorough. The wing grates against the edge of the dome, and he runs out of fuel. The plane begins to go down, when Big Jim tells Barbie to flip a switch under the control panel — it was a reserve fuel tank. Barbie lands the plane safely and returns to a crowd of people applauding him. Barbie thanks Big Jim for saving his life.
Julia and Sam find bruises on Angie’s body that could have only come from a man’s hand, so they head over to the police station to get the girl out of jail. Meanwhile, Junior, Norrie, and Joe confront the girl in her jail cell. Junior points a gun at her, but can’t do it, so Joe takes the gun from him. However, just then Julia and Sam arrive and tell the kids about the bruising, and that the girl didn’t do it.
Julia and Barbie start to get in an argument, where Julia feels like she’s losing Barbie’s trust, and Barbie seems to be a bit jealous of Sam.
Big Jim greets Rebecca on her way into Angie’s funeral. She comments that she hates that Barbie is getting to be the hero, and that Big Jim is the real hero and leader of the town. Norrie tells Julia and Barbie that Joe isn’t there, so Barbie goes to look for him. He finds Joe in the diner looking for Angie’s bracelet. They have a heart to heart that ends in a hug.
Big Jim speaks at the dual funeral of Linda and Angie. Meanwhile, Junior finds Angie’s bracelet under the cot he’s been sleeping on at the jail cell. Barbie and Joe make it to the funeral in the middle of Big Jim’s speech. He asks the congregation what they have faith in, and most everyone replies, “You, Jim.”
After the funeral, Rebecca breaks the news: there are too many people in the dome for their limited resources, and not everyone can survive.
Junior shows up at Sam’s cabin and tells him that he thinks he killed Angie.
