Week 3 certainly was more exciting than week 2 of the Fantasy Movie Draft. There were a couple surprises at the box office, with The Boss opening surprisingly strong. Meanwhile, Hardcore Henry had a pretty modest opening.
What Happened in Week 3?
What looked to be a lock for week 3 of Batman v Superman, did not actually turn out quite as anticipated. Batman v Superman hauled in $23,363,079. What was a big surprise for me was how big The Boss opened. I had hardly heard anything about this movie, and it earned a respectable $23,586,645, narrowly beating out Batman v Superman. Michelle has to be very happy with those numbers given her low cost of $1 for it in the Movie Draft. Violet, on the other hand, could be a little disappointed with Batman v Superman‘s drop off. Then again, it has made huge numbers still.
As for the rest of the box office, My Big, Fat Greek Wedding 2 brought in an additional 6,476,200. I was hoping for some more longevity on the film, but it is still doing pretty well. God’s Not Dead 2 is still hanging around with another $4,054,185. Hardcore Henry opened up to a modest $5,107,604. Given many people concerned about its 1st person perspective, this movie will need great word of mouth in order to have some longevity. Meet the Blacks seems to be petering, making just about $2.5 million for the weekend.
Unfortunately we have another movie that has been pushed back, with Before I Wake not having a current release date.
As for guessing the highest earner for this week, we had 2 winners! Matthew D was spot on with The Boss, and narrowly made it in the $5 million threshold for a whopping 8 points! Daniela also was able to make the correct guess with The Boss, but just narrowly made it outside of the $5 million. She still brought in 3 points for the week though!
We still have a long way to go, and there is plenty of room for upsets. Here’s how our current players are looking in week 3:

Opening This Week
There are a few more smaller movies coming out this weekend. We haven’t quite hit the big summer flicks yet. But there is one possible big contender coming–The Jungle Book. David is the owner of this movie, and he is hoping for some big numbers! This could be a behemoth, given its broad audience appeal. Jungle Book could certainly have some longevity to it, given it receives good word of mouth, and parents think it will be a good family movie. The other two smaller movies are Criminal and Barbershop 2: The Next Cut. Both movies I am not very familiar with, but the box office totals for these two are likely not going to be huge. I think the real movie to make an impact on the draft is The Jungle Book, and I can’t wait to see how it goes!

I think GND2 will surprise everyone and rocket to number 1 this week. I’ve heard great things about it. I’m not biased or anything.
I think it will be the jungle book with $55 million.
The Jungle Book – $65 million
